8. Campaign assistant, Seattle $12/hr
Hello Friends! It's that time of year again – campaigns are heating up and I need some help. If you know someone great who might be interested, have them get in touch. Previous political/campaign experience not a requirement. Thanks!

I'm looking for an assistant to work with me on several different campaigns doing some of this, and other stuff:

-- coordinating/ printing/ mailing invites and fundraising letters
-- staffing campaign events – these are usually early evening, weeknights
-- phoning event invitees to remind them of events – evenings/week days
-- database entry

Part time, most of the stuff can be done nights/weekends so someone who has another job that is flexible, or a student, would be fine. Not sure how many hours yet, it varies depending on what's going on with the campaigns. Picks up as the year goes on, we'll be done in mid-Nov. $12/hour. I'd like to find someone who could work with me consistently through Nov of course but would also like to line up some dependable "emergency help" for occasional events/projects.

The person must:

-- have a car
-- be flexible about staffing events at night, working on projects that are a rush
-- be smart, a self-starter, fast worker, can-do type who can work from home with minimal supervision
-- be professional to staff events/interact with donors/make calls
-- live in/near Seattle
-- have a computer, be email/technology fluent

thanks!!

15. King County Elections seeks 500 poll workers for 8/21 primary
King County Elections urges residents to support democracy and meet other civic-minded residents by serving as an Election Day poll worker in the early, August 21 primary. The early primary date provides the perfect opportunity for students to engage themselves in the democratic process, and earn some extra spending money.

"Poll workers will help ensure 371,000 poll voters have the chance to make their opinions count," said Sherril Huff, King County Records, Elections and Licensing Services Director. "Both this year's primary and November General Election require us to staff 407 polling places with more than 4,000 poll workers."

Voters throughout King County will be voting on ballot measures and local candidates in the August 21 primary. King County Elections is 500 short of the 4,000 poll workers needed to conduct a countywide election. Workers are especially needed in eastern King County.

Poll workers are responsible for opening and closing the polls and issuing ballots to voters. Workers will receive a four-hour, paid training, and the position requires attentiveness and a commitment to helping people navigate the election process.

Poll workers in King County receive around $122.92 for their service on Election Day, which begins at 6 a.m. and ends once the poll closing procedures are completed, around 9 p.m.

IIndividuals interested in serving as a poll worker should call the Poll Worker Coordination Office at 206-296-1606. For more information on working for King County Elections or information on the ballot measures and candidates, please visit http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections/.

18. Poll Worker Positions Available for August 21 in King County
Pay for the day of the election is $122.92. This is for working from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 or 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday 21 August.

Training for Poll Worker Judges (PWJ) is 4 hours long and people will be paid $31.72. If someone is placed as an AVU (Accessible Voting Unit) Judge they need an additional 4 hours (8 in total) of training, which will be paid $63.44.

If people have worked at the polls before and/or are comfortable supervising a group of people, have a car, and are available the weekend before the election to pick up supplies and call their poll workers, then we might be able to place them as an Inspector (more or less the "supervisor" of the polling location.) We are currently looking for Inspectors for polling places in: Burien, Newcastle, Redmond, Renton, and here at the KC Admin Building in downtown Seattle. (The Inspectors have to go through an 8 hour training which pays $63.44.)

We are still looking for AVU Judges at locations in Bellevue, Carnation, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Redmond, Renton, Snoqualmie, and Vashon. (Again - this position is one that calls for two different 4 hour training classes, for which people will get paid $63.44.)

Outside of that, we REALLY need people for the Sacajawea School, located at 9501 20th Ave NE in Seattle, up in Skykomish, and at the Vashon-Maury Grange for Pollworker judges. (There are lots of other Pollworker positions available throughout the county - I have only listed these specifically as they HAVE to have more workers.)

If anyone is interested they can call us here at the Poll Worker Office, M-F 8:45-4:15 at: 206.296.1606.

20. If they can get the money, the Backbone Campaign will have a couple of paid positions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Help Launch the Procession for the Future
Together we can animate a progressive vision for the country
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Friend of the Backbone Campaign,

I want to tell you about an exciting development in the Backbone Campaign and to ask for your support to make it happen. Since its inception, the Backbone Campaign has been a beacon of reason, inspiration, and creativity. The resonance of our message, fueled by the energy of committed individuals, has enabled us to grow over the past four years, to a nationally renowned and artful voice in a growing progressive movement.

Our tools and projects are in such demand that we cannot keep up at our current capacity. Currently, we have one paid staff person (me). We would like to expand by two additional half-time paid staff to respond to increasing demands and to develop and implement an exciting new project, the Backbone Campaign's Procession for the Future and its Spring 2008 Campus Tour.

The first staff person we would like to add immediately is Amy Morrison. For the last three and a half years Amy has served as a volunteer Managing Director. The Backbone Campaign Board of Directors and I would like her to continue and expand on her good work for the organization as a paid staff person. She has asked to be compensated for a half time job. Will you help us realize our goal of increasing our capacity and building a Procession for the Future?

The Procession for the Future is like a traveling Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, but instead of celebrating Porky the Pig and Bullwinkle, the Procession for the Future will animate a progressive vision for the country with giant puppets and floats that portray progressive agenda items such as:

* Fair Trade & Living Wage Jobs

* Ecological Sustainability & Renewable Energy

* The End of War & Dismantling of Empire

* Election Integrity & Renewal of Democracy

* Housing, Education and Health Care for All

* A Humane & Fair Immigration Policy

* Protection of Family Farms and Local Economies, and other progressive policies.

At the end of each Procession, the festival art pieces will circle up in a park or campus and become a theme park for education and training, with information on each of the issue areas and activist trainings on social justice organizing.

The Procession will launch March 4th, 2008 with a tour of campuses and cities across the country and then continue through Summer and Fall of 2008, visiting swing states and other strategically important locales to visually inspire and educate Americans so they can hold candidates accountable to a progressive agenda.

We have ambitious goals for the coming year, and we need to grow to meet them. Please help us raise the funds necessary to support hiring a Managing Director/Procession for the Future Organizer for the Backbone Campaign. One way you can do that is to hold a Backbone Campaign House Party; call the office if that interests you: (206) 408-8058. You can make an online donation via credit card or paypal, or mail a check. We gratefully accept gifts of stock and airline tickets. You can provide sustaining support with a recurring contribution by joining the Lumbar Club. All donations are tax deductible. Please go to our donate page or mail a check to the address below. https://secure03.dataride.com/backbonecampaign-org/donate.cfm

However you choose to support us, you are making an investment in animating our collective progressive aspirations, for which we thank you very much! Together we will build a strong progressive movement that continues to grow through and beyond 2008 to ensure a future worthy of our children.

Bill Moyer
Executive Director

PS- You might be wondering what the second halftime position is that we are speaking of. In a few months we hope to add a Student Organizer position to accompany the Procession to campuses around the country and continue visiting strategically important cities throughout the Summer and Fall of 2008.

Date: October 10, 2007
Contact: Megan Coppersmith 206-296-2796

King County Elections seeks 800 poll workers for November 6 General Election

Election Day is less than a month away and King County Elections is searching for nearly 800 civic-minded residents to serve as Election Day poll workers on Nov. 6. Poll workers are especially needed in Bothell, Kenmore, Kirkland, Redmond, Woodinville, North Bend, Duvall, Carnation, Snoqualmie, Issaquah, and Sammamish.

"Poll workers play a major role in helping ensure nearly 370,000 poll voters can cast their vote," said Sherril Huff, King County Records, Elections and Licensing Services Director.

King County operates 407 polling places throughout the county with more than 4,000 poll workers for the Nov. 6 election.

Bilingual speaking poll workers are needed throughout King County to provide language assistance to Chinese voters with limited English proficiency, assisting in the set up and closing of polling places on Election Day, and instructing voters on proper voting procedures.

Individuals interested in serving as a poll worker should call the Poll Worker Coordination Office at 206-296-1606. For more information on working for King County Elections or information on the ballot measures and candidates, please visit http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections/

38. Writers in Residence sought: Seattle
http://hugohouse.org/residencies/huts_search/

Richard Hugo House is accepting applications for its arts residency program – the “Hugo Huts” -- that will provide two writers with subsidized housing in Seattle's historic Belltown cottages, plus the opportunity to teach in the Hugo Writing Classes.

The writer will begin his or her residency on September 1, 2008, with a term of 12 months, subject to a month-to-month approval of the Parks Department. The residency is renewable, with a two-term limit. The below-market rent does not include utilities. Applications are due by April 11 (see full details below).

The Belltown Cottage Park Project is a collaboration between “Friends of Belltown P-Patch,” Seattle Parks and Recreation, and Richard Hugo House. The housing is in two refurbished cannery cottages at Elliott and Vine streets in Belltown, an evolving neighborhood north of downtown Seattle. A third cottage at the site will is available as a community venue for neighborhood meetings and events. Each cottage is 440 square feet, with a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and living room.

Hugo House, a ten-year-old literary arts center based on Seattle's Capitol Hill, has a philosophy of seeking to support writers with the resources they need. One need of most practicing artists is affordable housing. Current studies on urban affairs show that communities thrive with the meaningful participation of artists. Belltown is a neighborhood that once surged with artists but has been overtaken with development and expensive housing. The cottages can help in returning artists to the neighborhood.

The cottage residences are part of Hugo House's Writer-in-Residence Program, which has four other writer/mentors – including two teenagers – who serve our community by holding office hours (open to the public by appointment) and by participating in innovative programs to serve the Seattle community.

The writers who take residency of the cottages will: 1) hold open office hours one afternoon a week in the community cottage or a nearby coffee shop; 2) make a public presentation of their work; and 3) have the opportunity (under separate contract) to teach in the Hugo Writing Classes at Hugo House or in the community cottage. Each cottage will be limited to two people, one of whom will be the applicant writer.

Applicants should send the following by April 11 to “Hugo Huts,” Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave., Seattle, WA 98122:

1. a letter of interest which explains why the cottage residency would serve your artistic needs;

2. a resume, or statement of your writing history;

3. a description of your proposed writing project; and

4. names of three references attesting to your ability to pay rent, treat the property respectfully and interact in a lively urban environment.

5. a writing sample of 5-7 pages

The criteria for selecting the writers will include:

1. Artistic quality of writing sample;
2. Desire to live in an ultra-urban neighborhood (the cottages must be lived in, not used as studio space in addition to another residence);
3. Ability to hold open office hours and keep appointments with the public, one afternoon a week;
4. Statement of need;
5. Design of and participation in a public presentation of his/her work;Reliability in paying full rent on time.
The selection process will be complete by the first two weeks in June. No phone calls, please.

OPA Review Board Appointment Fact Sheet

March 5, 2008

The Seattle City Council seeks candidates for appointment to three positions on the Office of Professional Accountability (OPA) Review Board. Two of the positions are for two-year terms and one is for a one-year term. The time commitment varies based on the number of cases under review; the current Board meets at least four hours each month (two meetings each month). Board members receive a $400 monthly stipend.

The OPA Review Board (http://www.seattle.gov/council/oparb/) is part of Seattle's system for civilian oversight of law enforcement. The system also includes the OPA in the Police Department and the civilian OPA Auditor. Members of the three-person OPA Review Board work in concert with the OPA Director and OPA Auditor to consider and propose policies and procedures to reach the goals of the oversight system.

The OPA receives and investigates complaints of officer misconduct and makes recommendations to the Chief of Police on the disposition of the complaints. The OPA is headed by a civilian Director who reports to the Chief of Police.

The OPA Auditor reviews OPA investigations and makes public reports to the Mayor and City Council. The OPA Auditor is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council.

The OPA Review Board independently reviews the quality of the OPA complaint handling process as reflected in closed OPA cases and advises the Council on policies and procedures that would improve the process. The role and size of the OPA Review Board may change as the City refines any and all parts of the accountability system. See Seattle Municipal Code 3.28.900 and Ordinance 120728 which detail the OPA Review Board's role within the oversight system.

The goals of the oversight system are to ensure police accountability with thorough, fair and timely investigations of misconduct complaints; to maintain and improve public confidence in the City's response to misconduct complaints and in the professionalism of Seattle police officers generally; and to promote the best professional conduct by reviewing and advising on policies and procedures governing officer conduct.

Members of the OPA Review Board must have these qualifications:

--A reputation for integrity and professionalism and the ability to maintain a high standard of integrity.

--A commitment to and knowledge of the responsibilities of law enforcement and the need to protect the constitutional rights of officers and citizens.

--A commitment to the purposes and roles of civilian oversight as defined in the Seattle Municipal Code.

--A history of leadership experience and ability.

--The ability to gain the respect of officers and citizens, and to work effectively with the City Council, Police Department and other agencies.

--A capability to comply with the appearance of fairness doctrine. That is, they must be impartial, not prejudge issues, not have a bias towards either side in disputes, and not have conflicts of interest.

OPA Review Board members must be high school graduates, United States citizens, and at least twenty-one years old, and not have any felony convictions.

At least one member of the OPA Review Board must be a lawyer member of the Washington State Bar Association; one must have five or more years of experience in law enforcement; and one must have significant experience in community involvement, organizing and outreach.

Applicants will be subject to background checks by the Police Department.

42. Paid Clean Elections internships for students
Did you know that college and high school students are fighting for Fair and Clean Elections? Democracy Matters is a national student organization that is devoted to the struggle for full public financing of election campaigns at the local, state and federal levels. We offer a PAID internship to college students and a FELLOWS program for high school students to get involved in grassroots organizing at their schools and universities. We provide organizing materials, year-round mentorship, attendance at our annual national youth conference, links to your state organizations, and partnership nationally with Public Campaign and other national reform organizations.

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP in finding great young organizers to apply to our program. The attached flyers explain both the Democracy Matters college internship and the high school fellows program. Please spread the word so we can create the next generation of progressive leaders to work on this issue. Here's how you can help:

--Forward this email and the flyers to your email list.
--Take flyers with you to your speaking engagements and encourage folks to tell their kids and grandkids to apply.
--Highlight these youth opportunities in your newsletters to members and supporters.
--Send everyone to our great website: www.democracymatters.org.
--Use any means to spread the word about these great opportunities - especially to your activists who are students, faculty, or teachers.

If you need more materials from us or want more information, please don't hesitate to email or call me: joanm {at}democracymatters.org (315) 824 4306.

Thanks for your commitment! Together we will continue to make a difference.

Joan

Joan D. Mandle, Ph.D.
Executive Director, Democracy Matters
Chair, Public Campaign Board

The Democracy Matters High School Fellows Program

The Democracy Matters High School Fellows Program introduces students to the issue of money in politics and gives them support and guidance in developing skills of activism such as outreach, public speaking, and writing. Students who achieve the goals of the program will receive a certificate of achievement and a letter from Democracy Matters to send to colleges and universities of the student's choosing, outlining their accomplishments. Being a high school fellow also is a first step towards becoming a paid college coordinator. More than one student per high school can receive the certificate and letter as long as they are all contributing to the campaigns.

To complete the program, students must achieve the following goals:

Find a faculty advisor who can supervise and sign off on your progress. The faculty advisor will be an ally in your efforts, helping you organize other faculty and students in putting together successful campaigns.
Organize an assembly and/or class focused on the issue of money in politics by bringing in a guest speaker (activists, elected official, etc.), screening a movie followed by a discussion, etc.
Write a two-page research paper outlining the ways in which money in politics influences an issue of your choice (environment, healthcare, national defense, civil rights, etc.)
Coordinate a group of students to do school and neighborhood outreach to educate community members about the clean elections system.

You will also:

Receive a subscription to the Democracy Matters monthly E-News.
Receive any materials and supplies needed for your campaigns (pins, movies, flyers, stickers, etc.)
Receive support and guidance from a Democracy Matters Regional Field Organizer.

Don't wait until college to become politically active. Learn how money in politics influences the issues that you care about and start becoming an effective advocate for change. Be part of the fastest growing youth movement in the country and help revolutionize our democracy by getting big money out of politics and putting the voices of the citizens back in. We look forward to working with you!

To apply, write a letter to Professor Joan Mandle, Executive Director of Democracy Matters, joanm {at} democracymatters.org, explaining why you want to be a high school fellow.

www.democracymatters.org

THE FACTS:

Politicians depend on large private contributions to run their campaigns. Therefore they are more accountable to their big funders and special interests than to the majority of Americans.

Student voices are ignored on important issues ranging from tuition increases to environmental protection.

Ordinary citizens are locked out of an unfair system because they cannot afford to run for office.

Too much time is spent by politicians raising money instead of raising issues and talking with voters

Many people have lost faith in the system and don't even bother to vote because they think candidates are bought and sold.

"People say our generation is apathetic. But I don't think so. We need to make some noise to stop the big donors and special interests from controlling policies on education, war and peace, the environment and the things we care about." Adonal Foyle, NBA Player, Founder and President of Democracy Matters

".. is our generation's civil rights movement... The beauty is this is not some far fetched unattainable pipe dream, but rather a movement with a defined and clear purpose..." Nichole Diestel, Texas State University

"No matter what issue you are passionate about—education, women's rights, health care, racial equality, social justice—reform starts with campaign finance reform..." Amanda Ruthven, Mount Holyoke

"...Clean Elections would prevent `kick-back' legislation, which provides millions of taxpayer dollars to private interests... It's time to start plugging the holes in our democracy... " Jake Miller, Bloomsburg University

Democracy Matters is strictly non-profit and non-partisan.

50. NARAL is hiring canvassers
NARAL has launched an exciting new program: a field canvassing operation! Our canvass team is out in local neighborhoods, recruiting new pro-choice activists and members. We started this program in March, and we already have over 2,000 new NARAL members and activists! This is critical growth of our base as we approach the 2008 elections.

After establishing a solid foundation, we're ready to expand! That means we need a car for our canvassers so they can get to new neighborhoods and towns.

Do you have a car, in working condition, that you can donate to NARAL Pro-Choice Washington? If you do, please contact Corrigan Gommenginger at cgommenginger {at} prochoicewashington.org or (206) 624-1990.

A car for the canvass will enable our canvassers to reach even more new pro-choice activists. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you think you have a car to donate!

Are you interested in joining our canvass? Our canvassers earn a competitive salary and work 5 days a week in a fun team environment. Contact Corrigan Gommenginger at cgommenginger {at} prochoicewashington.org or (206) 624-1990 for more information and to apply.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legislative Director

Progressive States Network is seeking a senior-level Legislative Director to direct legislative and communication strategies for PSN, an organization working with state legislators and advocates in all fifty states to advance an anti-racist, social justice agenda covering a range of issues on behalf of working families. The Legislative Director will work with the Executive Director and other staff to develop long-term campaign strategies and will oversee the day-to-day work of policy and communication staff in implementing those strategies. The Legislative Director will have staff management, team evaluation, and project management responsibilities within the organization.

Progressive States Network is a fast-growing organization needing a creative and innovative Legislative Director who can work with both legislators and organizations around the country. Our goal is to dynamically strengthen the political infrastructure supporting progressive policy in the states while helping advance concrete legislation to raise wages, fight racist attacks on immigrants, establish health care for all, expand democratic rights, create a stronger, greener economy and promote a more just society.

Key Campaigns: A few major upcoming legislative campaigns include:

Coordinate policies across state legislatures to require transparency, as well as economic and racial equity in distribution of federal recovery funds;

Move five to six key bills (to be approved at our national conference in September) in fifteen to twenty states simultaneously during the 2010 legislative session, including issues such as paid sick days, anti-foreclosure, corporate contract and tax disclosure, labor rights, and other issues that help publicly define progressive policy and use multi-state work for strategic messaging;

Build on the 750 state legislators in forty-eight states signed onto our health care campaign to continue advocacy at both the federal and state level for fundamental health care reform;
Continue our immigrant rights work and build a national network of legislators working with supportive organizations promoting pro-immigrant policies and help delegitimize racist anti-immigrant legislators and initiatives.

The organizational tools we use in pursuit of these legislative goals include a combination of broad policy support in the form of reports and weekly updates on best practices, combined with rapid-response technical support for legislators and advocates in particular states. We work to strengthen cross-state legislator peer-to-peer education and coordination, while deepening coordination of legislators and organizational allies in each state. Our goal is to organize multi-state legislative networks built around particular issues like health care, immigration, wage rights and election reform, while at the same time building multi-issue progressive caucuses in each state that bring legislators and advocate allies together.

Qualifications: The candidate for Legislative Director must be self-motivated, as well as an innovative thinker and organizer with a dedication to a progressive, anti-racist vision of our economy and society. Legislative and communications experience essential. Demonstrated experience managing staff, volunteers and coalitions, as well as excellent verbal and writing skills are also an essential requirement. Experience in development or other organization-building skills a strong plus. Relevant experience includes (but is not limited to) working in political, policy, legal, journalistic, or government settings. Advanced degrees, including a JD or masters in related fields, may count toward a candidate's professional experience. But most of all, we are looking for smart, creative thinkers and doers who can help build and strengthen the progressive movement in this country.

Progressive States is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage and value a diverse workforce, and we seek diversity among applicants for this position. Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Salary & Benefits: Salary and benefits for this position is commensurate with a senior-level position based on the amount of relevant professional experience that a candidate has. Opportunities for advancement, travel, and additional training are available.

Location: Position based in PSN's national office in New York, NY.

Background: The Progressive States Network works with legislators and community organizations across the country to advance legislation at the state level that protects individual freedoms, promotes sustainable economic growth, and strengthens America's working families. Backed by labor unions, community leaders, environmental groups, grassroots organizations and other individual supporters, Progressive States blends analysis and action and is working to establish a cohesive network and support system for progressive legislators and organizations in all 50 states, while building a concerted movement dedicated to grassroots social and political change across the nation. See www.progressivestates.org for more information.

How to Apply: Email a compelling cover letter, resume and writing sample identifying which policy position you are applying for and which shows your ability to write about policy issues in a manner accessible to the public to: legdirectorjob {at} progressivestates.org

Stimulus, Tax and Anti-Privatization Policy Advocate

The Progressive States Network (www.progressivestates.org) seeks a highly motivated individual to work in a team approach as a policy advocate to promote transparency and racial equity in stimulus spending in the states, progressive tax and budget reforms, and contract accountability measures that protect taxpayers, workers providing services, and public priorities. The Progressive States Network is a state-based organization, the mission of which is to build a national network of progressive legislators and state-based advocates to advance progressive legislative campaigns in America's state legislatures.

Job Description: Progressive States is looking for an individual to provide policy and technical support for national campaigns and build a national legislative network of tax and budget legislators and allied organizations across the country. The candidate must work with legislators and state advocates to promote:

Equity and transparency in stimulus spending: Work with national coalitions and state legislators and advocates to require transparency in spending and assure that the stimulus addresses racial and economic inequality;

Progressive revenue options, including shifting the tax burden from poor and working families, closing corporate tax loopholes, and providing messaging to promote those options;
Budget reforms, including greater transparency and accountability to promote more effective and efficient spending;

Anti-privatization and contract accountability measures that challenge current privatization efforts, while assuring that any contracting out of government functions to private industry actually saves taxpayer money, promotes public priorities and protects wage standards for workers in the economy;

Economic models that value government investments as a key to economic growth, as a counterpoint to conservative ideology that promotes tax cuts and deregulation.

Since Progressive States is dedicated to breaking down single issue politics in favor of a shared multi-issue agenda, any candidate for this position should be prepared to promote these issues in the context of helping to promote other issues of concerns to our allies in the labor, civil rights, environmental and other grassroots communities.

The work of the policy advocate will include a few key functions:

PSN State Campaign Support: A core part of the PSN staffer's responsibility will be to support campaigns on these issues in each state, while create national messaging and organizing that links work across the states into cohesive messaging and cross-state support. This help will range from drafting legislation and amendments during the sessions, writing op-eds, developing fact sheets and other resource sheets, promoting grassroots public education in support of these initiatives, and helping legislators educate their fellow lawmakers on the need for policy changes.

Coordinating with Partners in Stimulus Transparency and Equity: The policy advocate will work with key partners to develop standards and legislation for the states to assure that the stimulus recovery funds are used to create good-paying jobs and address racial and economic inequality in our states. Politically, the advocate will help to work across the states to frame state priorities as serving national economic recovery goals.

Highlight Developments on Privatization: Part of the work will be supporting a national collaboration around privatization and contract accountability funded by the Ford Foundation with the goal of helping the partners in the collaboration develop innovative new strategies to promote responsible contracting in the coming years. This will include highlighting research on privatization in state and local government contracts and tracking major new privatization deals proposed in states and best practices being promoted in different states in response that promote accountability.

Build Tax, Budget and Contract Accountability Legislative Network: A key role for the PSN advocate will be to build a national network of state legislators that can work consistently to expand tax, budget and contracting reforms. By encouraging more legislator-to-legislator communication across state lines, we help legislators to see a policy proposal not as some radical new innovation, but as a tested policy which has strengthened the political position of their peer legislators in other states. Strengthening legislator-to-legislator coordination also encourages legislators to think more seriously about the national impact of their actions and their role as leaders in the progressive movement, instead of just narrowly concentrating on their role as legislators in their own state.

Qualifications: Any candidate must be self-motivated and an innovative thinker and organizer with a dedication to public interest issues. Excellent verbal and writing skills are an essential requirement. Background in election reform advocacy is strongly desired.

Salary & Benefits: Salary and benefits for this position is commensurate with the amount of relevant professional experience that a candidate has.

Backed by labor unions, community leaders, environmental groups, grassroots organizations and other individual supporters, Progressive States blends analysis and action and is working to establish a cohesive network and support system for progressive legislators in all 50 states, while building a concerted movement dedicated to grassroots social and political change across the nation. See www.progressivestates.org for more information.

Health Care Policy Advocate
The Progressive States Network (www.progressivestates.org) seeks a highly motivated individual to work in a team approach as a policy advocate working on health care issues with state legislators and organizations around the country. The Progressive States Network is a state-based organization, the mission of which is to pass progressive legislation in all 50 of America's state legislatures, strengthen progressive alliances, and challenge rightwing forces in each of those states.

Job Description: Progressive States Network has built a network of over 750 state legislators in forty-eight states who support fundamental progressive health care reform and the task of the health care policy advocate, working with both national and state organizational allies, is to help translate that legislative network into concrete changes in both federal and state policy. That work will include a few key policy goals:

Mobilize legislators and allies in support of federal health care reform;
Help implement the law in the states in the most progressive way possible once passed;
Work to assure transparency and equity in the stimulus spending in states across the country.

Because PSN works across multiple issues, any advocate should be prepared to work in a multi-issue framework and track some policy issues beyond health care.

PSN State Campaign Support: A core part of the PSN staffer's responsibility will be to support campaigns on these issues in each state, working with local allies and legislative allies we have developed from other campaigns to find sponsors and help move the bills in more states. This help will range from drafting legislation and amendments during the sessions, writing op-eds, developing fact sheets and other resource sheets, promoting grassroots public education in support of these health care reform initiatives, and helping legislators educate their fellow lawmakers on the need for the bills.

Building National Health Care Legislative Network: A key role for the PSN health care advocate will be to strengthen and deepen our national network of state legislators and allied organization that can work consistently to expand health care for all. By encouraging more legislator-to-legislator communication across state lines, we help legislators to see a policy proposal not as some radical new innovation but as a tested policy which has strengthened the political position of their peer legislators in other states. Strengthening legislator-to-legislator coordination also encourages legislators to think more seriously about the national impact of their actions and their role as leaders in the progressive movement, instead of just narrowly concentrating on their role as legislators in their own state.

Qualifications: The candidate for Health Care Advocate must be self-motivated, as well as an innovative thinker and organizer with a dedication to a progressive, anti-racist vision of our economy and society.

Excellent verbal and writing skills are an essential requirement. Background in health care advocacy is strongly desired.

60. Democrats Work opportunities for Sept 11 memorial volunteering
Tomorrow we commemorate the first September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Eight years ago, in response to those tragic events, Americans came together with a spirit of unity and compassion. Out of rubble and ruin came resolve and renewal.

In April, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act which, for the first time, officially recognizes September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. In communities across the country, our friends and neighbors will honor those who lost their lives by serving. We hope you will be one of them.

Here are some great places to find a service event in your area:

Green the Block: http://service.greentheblock.net/

United We Serve: http://serve.gov

Volunteer Match: http://www.volunteermatch.org/

September 11th continues to honor those who sacrificed and serves as a powerful call to action for all of us. Let us mark the day with our commitment to serve others.

Sincerely,

Democrats Work
