Minority Republicans on Thursday proposed sweeping tax relief totaling $3.3 billion, including a $400 property tax rebate for each homeowner. Democrats said they're considering property tax caps and other relief, but mostly dismissed the GOP package.
House Republicans offered three main tax cuts:
-Property taxes. The plan calls for rebates of $400 for each homeowner, totaling $870 million. Republicans would reinstate the 1 percent limit on annual property tax increases, as approved under Initiative 747. The limit was overturned by the courts last year and is on appeal. Another proposal would limit increases in assessed property values.
-Unemployment taxes. The GOP package would return about $2.4 billion in unemployment insurance taxes to employers and workers.
-Farm taxes. Republicans called for lower business taxes on custom farm services, a sales tax exemption on farm machinery and equipment, and other breaks. The package totals $40 million.
