1. Senator Oemig to speak at Progressive Caucus potluck
As part of the State Party meeting events in Bellingham next week, the Washington State Progressive Caucus is inviting everyone to meet and hear Sen. Eric Oemig talk about the Impeachment Bill (SJM 8016) he proposed in the State Senate this year.

Stop by the Olympus Room at the Quality Inn Baron Suites (100 E. Kellogg Rd., corner of Kellogg and Meridian) on Friday, April 27, at approximately 8 p.m. right after the Women's Club's lasagna dinner.

Sen. Oemig is a dynamic speaker, but if that's not enough excitement for you, the Raging Grannies will also be on hand with their songs and humor to help keep things lively! Short videos on impeachment will be shown occasionally throughout the evening. Free beverages and desserts will be provided. Who says politics can't be fun? Hope to see you there!

3. Progressive Caucus events in Richland
The Progressive Caucus will be holding a barbecue potluck on Friday, June 29th from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in Richland, WA (the night before the quarterly WA State Democrats Central Committee meeting). The potluck will be held at the John Dam Plaza, across the street from the Red Lion Inn (802 George Washington Way), where the evening's hospitality suites will be hosted later. We will have a grill available and will provide hot dogs, and beef, chicken and veggie patties. If you are able, please bring beverages, salads and desserts and/or $10. Can't get it together to bring food? Short on funds? Come anyway--there's always more than enough food!

Before you stop by for something to eat, we invite you to take part in the weekly peace vigil from 4-5PM put on by the Richland World Citizens for Peace. "We've been meeting once a week for an hour on the sidewalk on George Washington Way by John Dam Plaza in Richland to protest the war and stand as a witness for peace. We invite you to join us in helping to move the ship of state in a new direction (albeit slowly, very slowly). We'll have signs you can borrow, or bring your own or a flag, or you can simply stand with us and show your support for ending this horrific war. This is by no means a silent vigil; we welcome your views and your camaraderie." --Gene Weisskopf

To find out more about World Citizens for Peace, see their website http://wcpeace.org/, or phone Gene at 509-946-1316.

The Progressive Caucus quarterly meeting will be at the TRAC center, 6600 Burden Blvd., Pasco WA at 8AM. Agenda items will include considering the AFL-CIO immigration resolution, adopting a new version of our bylaws, and electing one more member of the eboard. The full agenda, statements by the three eboard candidates and a status update on resolutions will be posted on our website. http://www.waprogressives.org/

The Unity Caucus will be meeting directly after the end of the WSPCC afternoon general meeting in Room # at the TRAC center.

4. King County Legislative Action Committee meeting 7/15
Just a reminder that our next LAC meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 15th from 2-4pm at the Green Lake Library, (36th LD). We have two great guests joining us that day. Professor David Domke from the University of Washington, author of "God Willing? : Political Fundamentalism in the White House, the 'War on Terror,' and the Echoing Press.

David is an outstanding speaker with incredible insights into the ways in which mass communication and humans interact to shape the social, political, and cognitive processes.

We hope to tap into his expertise to learn how we can more effectively advocate for the changes we want to see in Olympia and in our communities.

We will also be joined by the great progressive activist and legislator, Bob Hasegawa, from the 11th LD. Should we be investing our precious dollars for higher education into stocks and bonds? Bob will be addressing 4215, a House Joint Resolution that passed last session that will be on the ballot.

Bob will also discuss HB 1510 that would create a state windfall profits tax on oil companies--- see information below.

We hope you can join us!

Thanks,
Scott White, Co-LAC Chair
Tina Orwall Shamseldin, Co-LAC Chair

6. Hey Dem Leadership! We want Justice! Can we say it louder?
When someone like Keith Olbermann is able to demand the president resign, when this undeclared and illegal war goes on indefinitely, when the * trashes the environment, and on and on and on, not to mention the least that leaves the Constitution in tatters, Who Will Demand Justice? Impeachement is imperitive at this point, if you ask me. Our national leaders must demand justice at this point for a president and vice prez who act like they are above the law. There are a few with the cahones to call for action, but not nearly enough. They need to say to hell with party, to hell with loyalty, this cabal of crooks has got to go. Nixon could only have dreamed about what the chimp has accomplished.
This president is a disgrace to this nation founded on the principal of laws.
I want Impeachment, and I want it NOW!

8. The state party overwhelmingly favors Dean's 50 state strategy
I'd say a pro-incumbent rather than pro-corporate bias, though. The foot soldiers are mostly Blue Grit Democrats (http://www.lauraflanders.com/)--the leadership theoretically likes this but in practice wants to keep the hoi polloi under their control. The Progressive Caucus stands foursquare for making the state party processes more transparent and bottom-up.

14. Free moview shown by Skagit Dems--1st Fridays of every month
Skagit Democrats is showing a Free Movie on the First Friday of each month -- at 7pm.

The movies cover topics that are of concern to all Americans, not just Democrats, Greens, Republicans, Libertarians, or Independents.

The Friday, September 7, 2007, movie will be: 9/11 PRESS FOR TRUTH.

Join Americans coming together to screen the acclaimed movie '9/11 PRESS FOR TRUTH' as part of the national "Answers For 9/11 Families Week”.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich has just announced that he will begin holding new hearings into 9/11 beginning in September because "the Commission Final Report... never resolved certain conflicts." '9/11 PRESS FOR TRUTH' details those conflicts like no other movie has, featuring five members of the 9/11 Family Steering Committee (the small group of victim's relatives who forced the creation of the 9/11 Commission), who reveal for the first time in the movie that "70% of our questions" were not answered by the Final Report.
9/11 PRESS FOR TRUTH is a joint national presentation with The Brave New Theatres. Please RSVP, if you can, at:

http://pressfortruth.bravenewtheaters.com/screening/show/9760

The movies show at Skagit Democrats headquarters in Mount Vernon, at 300A S. FIRST STREET. Further details are in the attached flyer.

Peace from “your movie host and projector man,"

15. Help clean Rep. Ross Hunter's house (he's undergoing chemo)--8/18
Representative Ross Hunter has been a great friend to the KCDCC and we appreciate his many contributions and efforts within the Party. His work for our great state has been outstanding as well.

You probably all know that Ross has been undergoing some pretty serious cancer treatments and is fighting back hard. Ross is an independent guy and it's difficult to find ways to help him, but Senator Rodney Tom has found a way and you are invited to help with a cleanup activity at Ross' home:

Saturday August 18, 2007 - 10:00 am
8208 Overlake Drive West in Medina
Please park at the Medina Elementary School on 81st (1/2 block from the Hunter home)

All volunteers are welcome! We will use some of the Blue Wave Cleanup bags from the 7/28 event.

17. Reform candidate for Whatcom County Executive
Edited on Thu Aug-16-07 01:15 AM by eridani
The event posting is late, but if you are in Whatcom County or know anybody else who is you might want to support Lois Garlick.

=== quote from http://nwcitizen. us/ ======

Lois Garlick has her campaign kick-off reception this Wednesday afternoon at the Roeder Home. All are invited. All, including other candidates, supporters, political insiders - whether you intend to contribute or just enjoy the company of others. From 4:30 till 7 pm.

Carl Weimer of the County Council will introduce Lois and she will speak, telling us of her priorities for her campaign for Whatcom County Executive. One area will be to start enforcement of county building and environmental laws - where Pete Kremen is so lax with over 800 unenforced violations in the county now.

NwCitizen is strongly backing Lois - and for you practical minded ones who think she has no chance, how about a vote for Lois as a protest against Pete. Send Pete a message that we want him to do a much better job during his last term. Who knows, Lois could win on the protest vote. If she does, she will provide us with integrity and a respect for our laws - now missing from the executive office.

She will no doubt also hire a solid administrative assistant - which is also something that Pete fully depends on. She has more administrative experience than he had when we elected him 12 years ago.

Roeder Home - 2600 Sunset Drive - near Broadway
Wednesday, Aug 15 - 4:30 to 7 pm.
Speakers, good company and refreshments.

As a note, Pete did decently for his first few years. But, like so many who become comfortable in office, he now thinks he is bigger than the office. His 8 acres of land on Squalicum mountain has many questions attached to it. He has allowed absolute chaos to reign in the departments under him, planning especially. He has ignored the enforcement of many laws. It really is a shame that none of the many candidates for mayor chose to run against Pete.

45. Nice editorial in her favor
OpEd from Whatcom Independent

Vote for your future
Another View by Myron Wlaznak

(excerpt)
"I support Lois Garlick for Whatcom County Executive. I think she is a smart, remarkable woman with guts enough to take on a long-entrenched incumbent while all the young Turks hid under rocks or county council chairs, or ran for mayor or just plain ran away. Lois gives us a choice.

A County Executive can either run county government or lead county government; the incumbent has chosen to run the county rather than lead. He deals (some say meddles) in the minute details of government, stashes unallocated funds in budget accounts he alone controls, too often works in secrecy, does not publicly engage the media (still waiting for that press conference, Pete), and has advanced no clear vision for the future of Whatcom County.

I think Lois will lead the county. I think she has enough moxie to appoint an able administrator and the street smarts to articulate a vision we can use to guide us through the next four years and beyond. With changes to the existing County Council, maybe the Executive and the Council can actually work together to develop open, functional and inclusive processes to address the critical issues of our day."

Hi, guys

Chuck Parrish here. Hope everyone is well. We have an unusual opportunity here to demonstrate that Democrats are really not unorganized and ineffectual as often suggested. You know that old saying about herding cats.....

In Tukwila, we have two candidates, both endorsed by 11th district and KC Dems. And one, Brian Kennedy, is a PCO himself.
Pam Carter is running for mayor. I was hoping that we could support our candidates with some phone calling parties and/or coffees for these candidates. What do you think?

Rebecca...are you still doing Allentown?

27. King County Legislative Action Committee meeting in West Seattle 9/16
I hope you have had a wonderful summer! Well it's time to gear up for this legislative session. Our next LAC meeting is this Sunday on September 16th from 2:00-4:00pm at the Highpoint Library.

Our special guests will be King County Councilmember Dow Constantine and Representative Dave Upthegrove. Dow will be presenting on the Highpoint Community (Hope VI project) that is an exciting public/private venture by the Seattle Housing Authority that is located by the library. A special thank you to Lisa Plymate for coordinating the location/room for our meeting and inviting Dow, (thanks Lisa). There may be an opportunity to do a tour before our LAC meeting at 1:30—please let me know if you would be interested in attending.

Dow will also give the group updates on the Maury Island activities.

Dave Upthegrove, rep. from the 33rd is the Chair of the Select Committee on Puget Sound and will give us an overview of the "environmental landscape" for next session.

I hope you can join us.

Thanks!

30. Report on the meeting
We had a great LAC meeting yesterday at the Highpoint Library—thank you! We had so many people who participated along with great speakers.

A special thank you to Lisa Plymate who helped coordinate the room and speakers for the event, (thanks Lisa).

We had a wonderful tour of the Seattle Housing Authority Highpoint Community. It is so amazing with its beautiful landscape and cutting edge "green standards". A special thank you to George Nemeth, a developer of the project, who came in on his day off to tour us, (thanks George).

A big thank you to Dow Constantine and Dave Upthegrove for their outstanding presentations. Dow spoke about the importance of the Highpoint community that historically had been isolated and now has become a vibrant part of the community thanks to the great work of the Seattle Housing Authority and its many public/private partnerships. We had a candid conversation on the Maury Island situation, (I think this will be a big item on our legislative agenda for next session). Attached are the talking points from Dow, (thanks Dow).

Dave gave an interesting presentation on the Puget Sound Partnership (which will consist of seven citizen leaders) and how they will be reporting back to the Governor in September of 2008 on how we can restore the health of the Puget Sound by 2020. This report will include who will be responsible for the action items and what the estimated cost is for the fix. So what may be on the horizon for next session in regards to the environment? This is still be reviewed but may include legislation on climate change (such as emission caps), more banning of toxic products and possible changes to the Growth Management Act (GMA). Also, below is one of the websites Dave mentioned in his presentation, (thanks Dave).

Thanks! Tina

A picture of our fine governor with the "mud monster" as seen on the www.mudup website that promotes "saving the sound" (not sure she should put this on her campaign literature).

34. King Co Legislative Action Committee meeting; Bellevue 10/21
Our next LAC meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 21st from 2:00-4:00 at the Bellevue Regional Library, (thanks Bill). The map/address is below. Joining us in October is Senator Claudia Kauffman from the 47th LD (thanks Bryce). Also, we need to review our legislative agenda so please ask your LD this month what issues they hope we address in this next session.

CFED--expanding economic opportunity—is a non-profit that ranks all 50 states with an assets and opportunity scorecard. It is very interesting information—our report is the following:

Index--Grade

Financial Security--A
Business Development--C
Homeownership--D
Health Care--C
Education--A
OVERALL--B

Within their report, they state that Washington could consider the following steps to improve our score: remove penalties for savings (asset limits on eligibility for TANF and Medicaid); support and leverage the capacity of local community development financial institutions which traditionally help underserved individuals enter the financial mainstream by providing bank accounts, financial education, and lower cost alternatives to pay day loans; and expand its publicly-sponsored health insurance programs to include all low-income residents.

Our fine governor will be holding a Town Hall meeting to hear feedback on issues. She will be at the Town Hall in Seattle on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7pm, (see information below—thanks Marcee).

We will also touch on the building up of the Democratic infrastructure in the 8th, including the recruitment of PCOs and Neighborhood Captains, different training opportunities and other events that help Democratic candidates up and down the ticket.

39. Gregoire re-election event; Seattle 11/6

On November 6th, 2007 – one year prior to Election Day 2008 -- two women governors are traveling to Seattle to join Governor Gregoire at a luncheon benefiting her re-election campaign. I hope you will join us in welcoming Arizona's Governor Janet Napolitano and Kansas' Governor Kathleen Sebelius as we all begin the one year countdown to victory!

Please show your support by signing up now to become a table captain at either the Silver or Gold level. Silver table captains are responsible for selling 10 silver tickets at $100 each and gold table captains responsible for selling 10 gold tickets at $250 each. All table captains, sponsors and members of Chris' Crew will be listed in the event program and invited to attend the pre-reception with Governor Gregoire and our honored guests.

Because of how close the election was in 2004, Washington State is the number one target for the Republican Governor's Association. They believe they can pick up a seat here and are eager to start the race. We need to be ready for this challenge.

It is crucial that Governor Gregoire has a strong fundraising finish this year. Due to state law, she will have to stop raising money for several months starting in mid December. Her opponent, on the other hand, will not have any restrictions on when he can fundraise. As you can see, we need your support now.

I invite you to join Governors Gregoire, Napolitano and Sebelius as we all celebrate Women Governors leading the way.

For your convenience, I have attached an invite you should feel free to email around. If you decide to be a table captain, please let me know.

If you have any questions, please call me at (206) 382-2008 or e-mail me at ALacitis {at} ChrisGregoire.com.

Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you on November 6th.

Governor Gregoire is hosting a series of town hall meetings across the state this fall to hear what issues Washington residents are concerned with.

It is very important that those concerned about health care attend these meetings and speak out for improvements in the system.

The format for these meetings permits audience attendees to ask questions.

Ask the Governor questions encouraging her to be a bold leader in the fight for health care for all.

Cynthia McKinney Announces Presidential Campaign

Global Research, December 20, 2007

Cynthia McKinney, a former six-term Congresswoman and an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq, today officially launched her campaign as a Green Party candidate for President.

In a video news release, McKinney says "the Republicans have deceived us; the Democrats have failed us. It is time for a new beginning: A time for hope to rise from the ashes of despair."

McKinney, a former Democrat from Georgia, was one of only three members of Congress to vote "yes" on a House Resolution in 2005 calling for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. One of her last acts in office was introducing Articles of Impeachment naming George Bush, Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice.

According to McKinney: "It is time to break the vicious cycle where the poor go to war and veterans come home wounded and ignored."

McKinney supports universal, single-payer health care; fair trade; and has been an unrelenting advocate for Hurricane Katrina survivors. No stranger to controversy and unafraid of speaking truth to power, McKinney has demanded that the Bush Administration tell the American people what the Administration knew about the events leading up to 9/11 and when they knew it.

56. U.S. Congressman Adam Smith’s Progressive Advisory Council Meeting
Monday, January 14th, 2008
12:30pm – 1:30pm
(12:00pm-12:30pm networking)
The Fabulich Center (3600 Port of Tacoma Road, Ste. 103, Tacoma)

Congressman Adam Smith invites you to attend the next meeting of his Progressive Advisory Council on Monday, January 14th, 2008 from 12:30pm-1:30pm at The Fabulich Center in Tacoma. Directions are provided below. Time will also be available from 12:00pm-12:30pm for networking.

The Progressive Advisory Council provides an opportunity for Adam to meet with members of the progressive community in and around the Ninth Congressional District and informally discuss issues of mutual concern. This dialogue helps guide Adam’s decision making in Washington D.C.

Congress returns to Washington D.C. the week of January 14th to begin the second session of the 110th Congress. Successes of 2007 included:

implementing key recommendations of the 9/11 Commission;
raising the federal minimum wage for the first time in ten years;
passing stricter Congressional ethics rules and “pay-as-you-go” budget restrictions; and,
rolling back multi-billion dollar taxpayer subsidies for oil companies in order to reinvest in renewable and energy efficient sources.

It is Adam’s hope that in the coming year Congress successfully forces our troops out of Iraq, further invests in U.S. workers by passage of an expanded Trade Adjustment Assistance program, and makes real advancements in access to affordable healthcare, among other important issues.

Your input on these issues and others would be greatly appreciated at the next Progressive Advisory Council meeting. Space is limited so please RSVP to Chelsea Orvella, Senior Field Representative, at 253.896.3784 or via email at Chelsea.Orvella {at} mail.house.gov.
