Of the 315 county, city and local taxing district positions on the
2007 ballot, more than 480 candidates successfully filed for office
this week. Many candidates will head directly to the General Election
with no competition at all.
"The public deserves a vigorous political debate over issues that
impact every aspect of their lives," said Sherril Huff, director
designee of the Records, Elections and Licensing Services
Division. "From transportation decisions to tax issues, voters this
fall will elect leaders who will shape the future of King County.
These are the local government positions that make decisions closest
to home."
Candidates who wish to file during the special, three day filing
period must complete a declaration of candidacy and, if required, pay
a filing fee or submit a filing fee petition in person by 4:30 p.m.
Friday, June 15 at King County Elections located at 500 Fourth
Avenue, Room 553.
"With more than 480 candidates competing in an odd-year election, it
is clear to me that citizens in King County remain passionate about
serving in local governments" said Huff.
In the event no candidates files at the conclusion of the three-day
filing period, election officials will declare an election lapse for
those positions and the incumbent will remain in the position until
the next odd-year election cycle. If the position is vacant, the
jurisdiction may appoint someone to serve until the next election.
