FWIW--
It's been three weeks since the terrible news and I continue to be without words to describe the horrifying murder of former KIRO-AM liberal talk host Mike Webb. How could this happen? Why did it happen? What was the motivation for the murder? Was the murderer conservative or homophobic? If KIRO and the Entercom Suits had NOT fired Mike, what would be different today? Who fired Mike at KIRO, and what was their genuine reason for firing Mike? Why did they not tell listeners what the real reason was? Was the firing from PD Tom Clendening, VP Ken Beck, or GM David Preidmore? There are no answers.
I have at least three dozen email exchanges with Mike Webb talking about his firing, and how deeply he felt the loss. I don't know what to do with these passionate, personal, and very revealing emails. Webb discusses his frustrations with Entercom Officials, and, his anger with his vicious, homophobic Internet attackers (Geov Parrish, Michael Hood, and Brian Maloney). Mike marked many of them - Confidential, for your eyes only. Should I turn them over to his family?
Seattle has lost so many great talk hosts over the years. Robert E. Lee Hardwick, suicide in about 1992, over his firing at KING news/talk 1090. A suicide note left in his truck on Stevens Pass revealed frustrations with his firing. Phil Harper, suicide in about 2004, who played Harry Nile on Imagination Theater with Jim French. Not sure the reason for the suicide, but that was another 1090 casualty, Infinity dropped their Classic Country and went to a monotonous, lifeless, all-syndicated progressive talk format.
Indeed, I might add that IN TWO OF THOSE EMAILS marked "confidential," Mike said that he went to lunch with 1090 officials, and that they REALLY WANTED a local host, but that they didn't have the funding to hire him. Whatever happened to LOCAL radio with LOCAL people by LOCAL managers familiar with the LOCAL listeners? Why are BLOGGERS on opposite coasts repeatedly and obscessively writing nasty posts about LOCAL talk hosts thousands of miles away? Why do these very same bloggers attack local radio hosts, instead of highlighting (as we try to do on this forum) how these hosts serve the LOCAL community? Why do they never talk about Mike Webb's commitment to honesty and integrity in broadcasting, serving the public interest of Seattlites, by discussing LOCAL events important to Seattle and Washington State?
I guarantee - Mike WOULD NOT have been fired in THIS 1960's-1980's scenario of LOCAL programming. Neither would have the other NUMEROUS unjustified 2004-2007 ENTERCOM Casualties in Seattle, Boston, and Sacramento.
I think one thing we can all learn from Mike's Firing and these other firings:
MEDIA CONGLOMERATE MANAGERS, STOP FIRING YOUR VETERAN TALENT!
May this discussion of Media Ownernship and its tragic consequences not prevent us from seeing the Forest from the Trees here ... the legacy of MIKE WEBB will live on - FOREVER, as one of the first pioneers in Live, Local, Liberal, Passionate, Caller-Driven, talk radio, from our city, and for our very own city, - SEATTLE.
