Bush to be in Bellevue 8/27
Astonishing that Reichert thinks this will actually help him.

http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/davidpostman/archives/2007/07/bush_coming_next_month_to_help_reichert_reelection.html

President George Bush is scheduled to be in Bellevue Aug. 27 for a top dollar fundraiser for Congressman Dave Reichert's re-election campaign. An e-mailed invitation says the event at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue includes a VIP reception that will cost $10,000 — given or raised — and a general reception with a $1,000 admission price.

The fundraiser will be the first high-profile event of Reichert's re-election campaign. During the 2006 campaign Democrats made much of Reichert's ties to the president, including a June Bush fundraiser for the congressman.

Any donation that exceeds the $2,300 per election Reichert can collect will go to the state Republican Party.

1. It will help him raise money.

Whether or not it helps him win the election is another story.

It will certainly screw up the already bad traffic...

2. I saw "Bush to be in Bellevue" and got my hopes up that he was being committed.
Then I realized you were talking about our Seattle area city, and not the NYC psychiatric hospital.

On a bright note, this will give Rubber-Stamp Reichert *something* to put on his "Dave in the News - Dave Reichert's record of independence and bi-partisan leadership" page. It appears to be just a little bit sparse right now:

http://www.davereichertforcongress.com/file/news.asp :spray:

I will admit, though, that it really does show his full record of independence and leadership, so it's not as if he's lying about anything.

3. Does that mean you are from the East Coast?
Or is Bellevue widely known as a nuthouse all across the country?

4. Yeah, I'm originally from the NYC area.
But Bellevue hospital is also pretty well known. Any time the police wind up nabbing someone who's obviously having problems, they always get "sent to Bellevue for observation and evaluation"

The local Bellevue does have some competition for the characters involved, though. ;-)

7. I was a transplanted NY'er and that's what I always thought
whenever I heard "Bellevue." So here are these snooty people talking about how they're from Bellevue and I would just think, if I were from a mental institution, I don't think I'd be so snooty about it.

6. OK a bellevue joke
For the record I went to Bellevue High, and my parents still live there, but mostly I don't like the place.

So a few years ago my wife and I went to a Bette Midler concert. She started by rattling off a bunch of really good Seattle jokes. At one point she points to the front couple of rows of people who were all going ga-ga. She says "look at these people - they all did everything they could to get where they are - they fought people, spent money they don't have, had sex with people they don't like - its my own little Belleuve."

It doesn't matter that this is on the Eastside; that will impact traffic all over the region. Great timing. I'm so glad (for numerous reasons) I don't work in Bellevue anymore.

President Bush is coming to Bellevue on Aug 27, to raise money for Representative Dave Reichert (WA 8th Congressional District). People from throughout the Pacific Northwest, and from dozens of organizations, will converge on Bellevue to peacefully but loudly declare our outrage that such a lawless and incompetent president is still in office.

Bush exploited the tragedy of 9/11 to lead the nation into an unjustified war against an enemy unrelated to the 9/11 attacks. This reckless, poorly planned, and mismanged war has cost the lives of over 3,700 US soldiers and has maimed amost 30,000 others. Those soldiers still fighting in Iraq are suffering through extended tours of duty in awful conditions, amidst a religious civil war with no end in sight. Between 50,000 and 600,000 Iraqi civilians have died, with millions more displaced from their homes. The monetary costs of the war to Americans are staggering: close to half a trillion dollars so far - over $1500 per American. The costs of the war on our military's morale and readiness, on America's long-term security, and on America's reputation are incalculable.

The Bush Administration condoned kidnapping, torture and extraordinary rendition. It sent prisoners to languish in concentration camps with no access to trial. It spied on its citizens in violation of existing laws. It withdrew from international treaties regarding torture and climate control. It ignored the advice of scientific panels, suppressed politically inconvenient findings, fired prosecutors for partisan political reasons, was negligent in resolving the Palestian-Israeli conflict, bungled its response to Hurricane Katrina, divulged the name of a CIA agent, and still refuses to allow staff members to testify before Congress. Despite a costly war, deteriorating bridges, the reconstruction of New Orleans, a teetering medical system, substandard care at Walter Reed, the AIDS crisis, genocide in Sudan, and an $8 trillion national debt, the Administration cut taxes for the rich and allowed corruption and waste to flourish in federal agencies.

Regardless of one's opinion about whether America should continue fighting the war in Iraq, the persons responsible for getting us into this mess - and for the other violations of law and human decency - need to be held accountable.

According to the U.S. Constitution, the House can impeach for "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." Yet there is no higher Crime than knowingly distorting evidence to justify going to war. There is no higher Crime than encouraging the torture of prisoners and herding them into concentration camps without trial or protection by the Geneva Convention. According to Article VI of the Constitution, "all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land." Torture, extraordinary rendition, and Guantanamo violate the United Nations Convention Against Torture and the Geneva Convention. Other impeachable offenses include violating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the Fourth Amendment by intercepting domestic communications without warrant; obstruction of justice concerning the firing of U.S. Attorneys; and leaking the name of a CIA agent. Former Nixon lawyer John Dean has called Bush's misdeeds "Worse than Watergate." If criminal incompetence is a high Crime, the case for impeachment is a cinch. In any case, impeachment (indictment by the House) requires merely enough evidence to warrant investigation for possible conviction by the Senate.

Some people argue that impeaching Bush would prevent Democrats from working on the issues that matter, such as the war in Iraq. Nothing could be further from the truth. The best and perhaps only way to stop the waste of lives and money - and to stop Bush from invading Iran - is to cripple the Bush administration by pursuing impeachment and exposing the terrible facts. Progress on other issues too - like global warming and health care reform - will be slow or impossible while Bush is still empowered.

According to Senator Patty Murray, the most compelling argument against impeachment of Bush can be summarized in two words: "Dick Cheney". But H. Res. 33, which calls for the impeachment of the Vice President, already has the support of 20 members of Congress. The Vice President shares responsibility for the many abuses of power perpetrated by this presidency.

The Bush Presidency has been a disaster of historical proportions. We call on all citizens with common sense and decency to join us in peaceful protest on Aug 27 in downtown Bellevue.

Donald A. Smith

25. I don't think Clinton ever flew into Sea-Tac.
I was watching one of the channels last night (I think it was KIRO) and they said they looked back into their news archives and couldn't find any footage of a president landing at Sea-Tac in the last 15 years.

They said they thought it had something to do with the I-5 construction, which would have still been going on this week, had they not finished early.

My first thought was to go on 509 to Des Moines to avoid that, but no luck--that was jammed too. I went through Arrivals at the airport and came out the other end, but both north and southbound 99 sucked also.

28. More commentary
http://www.washblog.com/story/2007/8/30/24312/6699

When the Prez shows up in very bosom of the haves and have mores and meets a thousand determined protestors instead of cheering crowds, you know the wind has shifted irreversibly.
Bellevue Washington is the Disneyland of the shop till you drop crowd. The pleasant streets are lined with chic restaurants, smart hotels, the latest fashions and a thousand ways to empty your wallet. It's a galaxy away from mega malls where the working class spends their disposable income.
Bellevue is the home of Bill Gates and other dot com millionaires as well as the usual assortment of corporate execs, real estate moguls, car dealers etc. Bush's base.

It's also the home of Linda Boyd, founder of Washington for Impeachment who takes the responsibilities of citizenship very seriously. She decided that when George came to town on August 27th, he would get an eyeful and an earful. That's just what happened.

29. Bellevue Washington.
And in all those little shops and stores there are employees, these are people that live and work for a working wage. There are apartment buildings galor and new ones being built all the time. There are working people there just the same here in Fremont or Ballard.

Seems to me you view it as the play ground of Mercer island.Where the very rich or elite do as they please-,a play ground just for them.

There are run down houses that are in need of repair. And repairs are expensive -not everyone is rich or republican in Bellevue.

And once more Bellevue people are still our neighbors and friends.

George Bush has been confined to republican friendly zones for quite some time now -so how far are try,en to push it? Is this a Bellevue hate base sort of a thing-or are you just using Bellevue threw a hate base to move your point in disire? What kind of protest is that?

It doesn,t matter who posted it ,it was poorly put.Mean people suck-as do hateful people. I have seen too many working people that live and work in Bellevue that are self conscious about it, (I,am not rich ,I just work.) I live in Bellevue you know- in a apartment. don,t shoot me i,am from Bellevue ,and I did vote for Kerry!

That,s Bellevue Washington not some New York nut house.
Just like Buffalo New York is a place- a city in New York, not some skuzz bucket or down there in the pitts.
