http://www.kirotv.com/news/16142689/detail.htmlThe main gate to Fort Lewis is back open after an Army bomb squad unit checked out a suspicious vehicle parked at the visitor's center.
The gate was closed shortly after 5 o'clock Friday evening, after a maroon vehicle was spotted parked at the Army facility's visitor's center. The Washington Department of Transportation also closed the exit ramps from I-5 to the Fort Lewis main gate in both directions.
Fort Lewis tells KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that the owner of the van had applied for a visitor's pass to the base. At that time, Army personnel became suspicious of the man.
As a precaution, Army personnel evacuated the visitor's center, as well as the parking lot.
Meanwhile, the Army's bomb squad was called in to investigate. An explosives-detection dog also showed interest in the maroon van. Then, a remote control robotic unit was called in to inspect the van.
Shortly after 7 o'clock, the van's owner was located, and the all-clear given. It is unknown what made the van suspicious in the first place.
