Activist volunteer opportunities in Washington--2009 and later
y name is Brian Gunn, and I am a PCO in the 31st LD. I am also a member of Democrats Work, a group that seeks to connect active Democrats with service projects in their communities.

Democrats Work is partnering with the Presidential Inaugural Committee to help put together the "Renewing America Together" National Day of Service on Monday, January 19th (and the weekend before). This Martin Luther King Day -- a day before President-elect Obama will be sworn in -- volunteers across the country will get to work to bring about the change we need. We hope you'll get involved.

As you may be aware, the Cascade Land Conservancy is sponsoring a restoration project at Duwamish Riverbend Hill which is in the 11th LD. The first work party is scheduled for January 17. The details are listed below. This would be a great way for members of the 11th LD to participate in this national event to recognize MLK Day and celebrate Barack Obama's inauguration by giving back to the community.

Can you please forward this information to the members of the 11th LD? Interested volunteers can sign up at the link below:

http://democratswor k.org/index. php?page= events&view=eventdetail&eventid=591

Thanks for your interest and assistance. Please feel free to contact me via email or phone if you have any questions.

1. Volunteer for the Governor's Health Care working group

Despite the lack of funding in the proposed State Budget for the Citizens’ Work Group on Health Care under SB 6333 (2008), Governor Christine Gregoire still plans to move ahead with appointments to this Work Group in 2009.

If you or other qualified applicants are interested in being considered for an appointment to this Work Group, please complete the “Application for Gubernatorial Appointment to a Board or Commission” form available online at http://www.governor .wa.gov/boards/ application/ application. asp.

In the drop-down list directly under applicant’s name that reads, "Please choose the board or commission for which you would like to be considered:" select the "Washington Citizen's Work Group on Health Care Reform."

Applicants will then be evaluated and considered by the Governor and her staff for appointment to this Work Group.

If you have any questions, please contact me at legislative {at} wahealthsecurity.org.

Thanks for your ongoing support of quality, affordable health care for all!

Sincerest regards,

Linda Sternhill Davis

2. Help needed for conference 3/14 helping middle school girls pursue interests in science
Seattle Expanding Your Horizons (SEYH) is in need of help for their annual conference on March 14, 2009 at Seattle University. It's a great opportunity to help middle-school girls become knowledgeable and excited about careers in science.

They're also recruiting workshop presenters. If you know a middle school girl who has a strong interest in science and math, this may be the opportunity for her! The registration deadline is February 18, 2009.

For more information, visit their website at http://www.seattleu.edu/seyh/ or contact the coordinators by email (info@seyh.org) or phone (206-296-2117 - the SEYH voicemail line).

3. Eastside MoveOn could use volunteers
Eastside MoveOn had a fantastic 2008! We started out with about 100 members, and now we have over 250. In 2009, we will be lobbying Congress, working towards establishing a public health insurance plan and pushing for government economic recovery programs, as well as continuing our antiwar work.

Eastside council (formerly Bellevue council) really started to grow around the 2006 elections. MoveOn opened a local office in downtown Bellevue, and members spent many hours on the Call for Change, making phone calls to ask other MoveOn members to volunteer. Together, we helped Democrats take over Congress. Since then, our monthly events have attracted increasingly large numbers of attendees: the “Fired Up and Ready to Go” event in November had 45 show up. There is a great deal of interest in working on MoveOn events locally. In fact, one of the challenges is finding venues that can hold large groups.

I became the council coordinator in the spring of 2006. In June 2006 I became a Regional Coordinator, working on three councils. I am currently coordinating five councils: Eastside, Kenmore, Spokane, Olympia and Tacoma. Olympia has a new council coordinator who I am training. Tacoma is a brand new council, and it’s really exciting because there is a great deal of interest there (their events are often full).

Working as Eastside council coordinator and Regional Coordinator simultaneously is really too much for one person. Therefore, I will be stepping down as council coordinator as soon as I can, preferably in time to plan the next action in February. I would like you to consider stepping up in this position. The responsibilities of council coordinator are to coordinate monthly events, recruit new members and to foster a sense of group. The time commitment is 15 to 20 hours a month.

MoveOn has great training materials and I will personally assist you all the way. We have a phone tree in place for communications. We have people who work on media. We have people who have been spokespersons and hosts. You will have lots of support.

If you have an interest in serving as council coordinator, please get in touch with me. I would be happy to discuss it with you. I am also looking for a recruitment coordinator and a media coordinator.

Thanks for all you do,

Gail

6. NARAL has a number of volunteer opportunities
Event Invitation Phone Calls

With both the Youth Leadership Summit and Lobby Day just around the corner, we need a TON of help calling our members to invite them to these events. These are easy phone calls because you'll be calling NARAL's volunteers and donors. We provide you with a phone list and script. Phone calls can be made:

-Mondays through Thursdays from 5:00-8:00pm

-Sundays from 5:30-8:00pm
For more information or to sign-up contact SashaCousineau {at} ProChoiceWashington.org or (206)624-1990.

Have good handwriting? Willing to stuff and stamp envelopes? Come to the Mailing Party!

Mailing parties are a laid back, social way to support us. The best part is that you can volunteer for as much or as little time as your schedule allows! We are especially seeking a few volunteers with nice, legible handwriting to address these letters that will be going out to major donors.

The mailing party will happen on Wednesday, February 18th from 5:00 to 8:00pm. SashaCousineau {at} ProChoiceWashington.org or (206)624-1990

Lobby day prep-party

In order to prepare for our annual Lobby Day in Olympia we'll be making participant packets filled with all the information folks will need to have a fun and informed trip to the Capitol. We'll be assembling the packets on Thursday, February 19th from 6:00-8:30pm.

For more information or to sign-up contact SashaCousineau {at} ProChoiceWashington.org or (206)624-1990

Data Entry

We have a need for on-going data entry help. The best things about volunteering to help us with data entry is that the times you can come in are very flexible AND you can come in for as much or as little time as you'd like.

-Monday through Thursday anytime between 9:00am and 8:00pm
-Fridays anytime between 9:00am and 5:00pm

For more information or to sign-up contact SashaCousineau {at} ProChoiceWashington.org or (206)624-1990

The Martin Luther King, Jr. County Civil Rights Commission is soliciting applications from individuals in the following County Council District: 9 - Council Member Reagan Dunn (Maple Valley, Renton, Bellevue, New Castle, Covington, and Kent).

All Commission members are confirmed by the County Council and serve without pay. All Commission members are bound by the County Code of Ethics, and are required to complete a financial disclosure statement upon appointment. Each Commissioner serves a three-year term.

11. Help survey homeless people in Seattle
Last month, we asked you to identify the most pressing need in your community. The most frequent response: assistance with basic needs like food and shelter. We have a chance to do something about that in Seattle.

On Monday, April 13th, from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight, Democrats Work join with community groups and volunteers -- in coordination with the City of Seattle, United Way of King County and the Committee to End Homelessness -- in a massive effort to better understand the needs of people who are homeless. Our work will help guide how the city invests more than $40 million in services each year to prevent and end homelessness.

Teams of three volunteers will speak with every person they meet as they walk through specified areas to determine if people are homeless. Surveys of the homeless will be conducted anonymously and respectfully across the city. These surveys will help the city better understand the needs of homeless people and the barriers to finding permanent housing.

Please click here -- http://tinyurl.com/da746z -- to sign up as a team member today.

Volunteers are required to attend one hour of training prior to the evening of the assessment. (You will schedule that as part of your volunteer sign-up process.)

This is a big and important effort. Join us on the front lines to end homelessness in Seattle.

All the best,

Thomas Bates
Co-Founder & Executive Director

P.S. If you have any questions, please contact Dylan Ordonez at 206-684-8119 or homelessneeds@seattle.gov.

15. Association for Women in Science mentoring program
AWIS
ANNOUNCING SEATTLE – AWIS GROUP
MENTORING PROGRAM 2009/2010

What is AWIS Group Mentoring?
AWIS group mentoring is a small group of women scientists who will create a circle to advise and assist one another through the difficulties and challenges of their competitive careers. The group will meet to discuss, share information, and celebrate success of one another. Each group will have 4-5 peers with coordination of at least one experienced mentor.

Who will be in your group?
The mentoring committee of Seattle AWIS will review submitted mentor/mentee surveys and match you with a group based on interests, career goals, geography and other aspects.

What are we going to talk about?
The group will choose how to manage the schedule and subject matters, but Seattle AWIS will provide you guidelines of ideas and articles to help start conversation. We are convinced that once you get started — you won’t have a problem to find issues to talk about! The group members should be open to give and get professional and personal support from other women in the scientific community.

What are the advantages of group mentoring?
So many … Start from getting to know more women in science in your area, share your experiences, discuss problems, bring solutions, and gain support and values from professionals around you. Being women in science, we could advise one another through a dynamic instruction of group mentoring to help overcome hurdles and cheer achievements.

Are we just going to sit around and complain?
Of course not! The group mentoring is a mechanism for sharing both failure and success with peers, and the focus is to promote career growth and problem solving in a supportive ways. Your mentor will help guide you and promote constructive discussions.

Is it going to be fun? Absolutely! You will make new close connections with women who share your concerns, interests and values.

Mentoring will take place in groups of 4-5 women with at least one Mentor. Time commitment will be 2-3 hours per month over a 6 month period.

How to join the SEATTLE - AWIS Group Mentoring Program ?
Join Seattle AWIS membership at www.seattleawis.org

You must apply online by filling out the Mentor or Mentee surveys. Links to the surveys will be posted on our website: http://www.seattleawis.org and are ALSO available below in this Seattle AWIS Email publicizing this program.

19. Referendum 71 needs phonebankers
With Referendum 71 still too close to call, we are not going to wait for qualification to begin our campaign to win the election. We MUST mobilize NOW to be ready for when ballots are mailed to voters in October, and we need YOUR help!

Our most immediate need regarding volunteering is for phone banking. We're starting Monday, August 10th at our office in Seattle (720 7th ave, 98104, between Columbia and Cherry st). The schedule will be Mon-Thurs 10am - 8pm and Fri 10am - 5pm. Anytime that you are available during these hours is much appreciated! We'll be calling voters and educating them on Ref 71, and the importance of voting APPROVE to retain WA state's domestic partnership law. If you're interested in a shift, please let me know as soon as possible! We must engage our friends, family and neighbors in this important campaign if we are to retain the domestic partnership law and protect all Washington families. It is the work and participation of our entire community, not a select few, that is imperative if we are to triumph.

The technology we use for phone banking is online, so this is also something that can also be done remotely or from home. If you would be interested in participating , please let me know and I can give you further instruction. We also need people to attend events all over the state to inform people about the referendum and collect pledges of support-- to find an event near you, check out our events calendar at:http://www.fusewashington.org/page/content/equalrights

Thank you all for the work you do, and I hope to hear from you soon!

21. Help needed to promote Seattle Housing Levy
Dear Friend,

Thank you for supporting the Seattle Housing Levy! Together, we will ensure Seattle has more quality, affordable housing for our most vulnerable neighbors than ever before.

As the campaign's new Field Coordinator, I look forward to seeing you at one (or several!) of our many upcoming volunteer opportunities. From entering data at campaign headquarters to waving signs at community events, we have something for everyone!

In the next few weeks leading up to Election Day, we need your help to spread our message to as many Seattle voters as possible. There are far too many Seattle voters who are simply unaware of what the Levy does or that it is even on the ballot in November. And with a ballot measure as significant as the Seattle Housing Levy, every new contact we make with a voter will bring us that much closer to victory.

We are going to start with the basics and will begin to phone bank on Tuesday, September 8th. Seattle's many Legislative District Democrats organizations are beginning to have their endorsement meetings on Wednesday night, so we will be contacting members of those organizations to let them know how important the Levy is to Seattle and to urge them to vote to endorse it at their respective meetings. We'll be at the UFCW Call Center located at 5030 1st Ave S, Seattle from 5 pm to 8 pm making calls, and I hope that you will be able to join us. Even if you can make it for only half an hour, your time and calls will make a huge difference! Each Legislative District endorsement meeting happens only once, so let's make sure we get these important endorsements!

If you can help phone bank on Tuesday or can volunteer at any of the events below, please feel free to let me know. I can be reached at priscilla {at} yesforhomes.org or at (206) 307-9252.

I have been extremely impressed by the energy and enthusiasm behind the YES for HOMES campaign and truly look forward to working with you to make sure we cross that finish line together in November.

Best wishes,

Priscilla Min

23. Institute for a Democratic Future is looking for trainees
It’s that time of year…Institute for a Democratic Future is officially accepting applications for the class of 2010!

Do you know any talented adults, ages 21-36, who might be interested in this coming year’s class? We will be accepting up to 30 ‘fellows’ for the Class of 2010. Prospective ‘students’ may apply online or mail all of their application materials directly to our PO Box. We’ll be accepting applications until November 20, 2009. http://www.democraticfuture.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58&Itemid=77

As you may know, the Institute for a Democratic Future (IDF) is a six-month long civics program for men and women focusing on three core areas: public policy, the legislative process and campaigns/elections. The program is entering its 13th year and we hope to have another excellent class who will continue to do great things post-graduation: working for our Democratic allies, moving public policy mountains, shaking up the Washington establishment, and of course, running for office.

Our six-month program, starting in January 2010, will take next year’s class all over the state and to Washington DC. We will hear from elected officials, former alumni, policymakers and local leaders. We’re proud of our alumni – and we boast their successes whenever we can. For example:

Kevin Van de Wege, IDF ‘02, who is a firefighter (Local 2933) in Sequim and is also State Representative from the 24th Legislative District, working to bring voice to working families in Olympia.
Dana Laurent, IDF ’08, Political Director for Planned Parenthood, implemented the most aggressive field program Planned Parenthood has ever executed to help Governor Gregoire and build on majorities in the state House and Senate.
Sudha Nandagopal (IDF ’08) and Kelley Drake (IDF ’07), both of whom work at the Washington Conservation Voters and work to keep our elected officials green and moving a green, pro-environment agenda forward.

We have dozens and dozens of other alumni who are changing the landscape in Washington – too many to name individually. Labor leaders, congressional and council staff, campaign workers, political consultants, lawyers, policy staff, fundraisers, and engaged citizens who volunteer on campaigns or form their own political organizations. We are proud for our small part we play in these successes. Can you help us build our next great class? Do you have someone who might be interested in our program? We want ‘em!

For more detailed information on the program, see our website: www.democraticfuture.org. All of the deadlines and application requirements can be found there as well.

We’ll be accepting applications through November 20th with interviews a few weeks after. Feel free to re-package this email and forward it around to anyone who might be interested.

Any questions or comments? Please feel free to contact us directly: info {at}democraticfuture.org or 425-395-4330.

Sincerely,

27. BE A GRASSROOTS LOBBYIST FOR CHOICE
Worried about the state budget deficit and its impact on access to reproductive health? Are you sick of fake clinics targeting young and poor women in your community with anti-choice messages and incorrect information? This is your chance to do something about it. Help us generate calls and emails to key legislators in Olympia by being a Grassroots Lobbyist. This entails coming to the NARAL office and helping us call our donors and activists across the state. We will tell our members which legislators need to be contacted and provide them with simple, pro-choice messages to give to those legislators. This is easy but critical work.

These calls will be made from January 25 through February 5. During these two weeks, volunteers can come in Mondays through Thursdays from 10am-8pm, Fridays from 10am-5pm. One hour of your time can make a critical difference in the legislative outcomes of this year's session.

For more information or to sign-up contact me at SashaCousineau (at) ProChoiceWashington.org or (206) 624-1990.

33. Equal Rights Washington needs Earth Day volunteers in Seattle
ERW members are encouraged to join local non-profit OUT for Sustainability to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with the second annual, "EARTH GAY" event on Sunday April 18th, with service projects taking place from 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m., and an after party for the whole community at Havana , on Capitol Hill, featuring DJ Lady Jane. The After party begins at 5:00 p.m., and is free for service project volunteers; or a $5.00 donation to get in.

ERW's work with OUT for Sustainability reflects ERW's work to raise the profile of the LGBT community in communities with intersecting values or needs. Analysis of the Approve Referendum 71 vote shows that people affiliated with environmental organizations were among those most likely to strongly support the domestic partnership law. Historically it has been challenging for the environmental and LGBT communities to work together in a coordinated fashion because while we share similar values our missions are very different. Earth Gay and other work to be undertaken by ERW this year will try to find ways of working with the environmental community to strengthen our movement for LGBT civil rights.

Partnership is at the core of EARTH GAY this year, as local organizations and businesses commit to both the environment and diversity. OUT for Sustainability is working in partnership with Equal Rights Washington (ERW), the Environmental Coalition of South Seattle (ECOSS) and the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA). Other participants include Seattle Works, Climate Solutions, The Boeing Company, GrowFood.org, and the South Park Action Agenda.

Refreshments will be provided to service project volunteers, including Organic donuts from Mighty-O and coffee from Fuel.

Urban Farming with Alley Cat Acres on Beacon Hill
Neighborhood Cleanup with ECOSS in South Park
Garden Planting with Kenyon House in Rainier Valley
Habitat Restoration with the Nature Consortium in West Seattle

41. Help pack boxes for Cuba aid.
Seattle has collected more than forty or fifty boxes of material aid to aid Cuba.s hurricane repair efforts and to flaunt and oppose the Blockade and the Travel Ban. There are Seattle People on the Friendshipment too.

Now we have to load this material on the bus which includes some high tech medical equipment and lots of medical supplies that the Blockade has caused on the island whose scarcity is due to the blockade.

There will be a loading party/potluck program that will begin @ 6pm @ El Centro de la Raza - 2524 16th Avenue South, in Seattle on Wednesday, July 7th. There will be last minute labeling of new items and loading the existing boxes onto the bus and a potluck dinner, which everyone enjoys and the Caravanistas will tell of what caused them to take the trip this year . and we will try to have some music.

Yesterday (the fourth of July) a bunch of Washingtonians joined the Canadians at the border crossing in Blaine and helped to usher across the bus and a lot of Cargo that the Canadians were sending. See pictures of this on our web site . seattlecuba.org. Our webmaster, Chris Pforr, is VERY prompt.

44. NARAL needs phonebanking volunteers
Greeting Pro-Choice Washingtonians-

The primary election is on August 17th and absentee ballots should be arriving during the first week in August. As the leading political organization on reproductive rights, it is our job to make sure voters know who the pro-choice candidates in their district are so that they can vote to protect the pro-choice majority in our state legislature.

We need YOUR help to do this! We'll be calling NARAL Pro-Choice Washington members and pro-choice voters to let them know about 100% pro-choice candidates, like Susan DelBene (8th Congressional District) and Claudia Kauffman (47th Legislative District), as well as give them a friendly reminder to vote. Phone bank shifts are two hours long. We provide scripts, training, and SNACKS!

Why is it important to encourage people to vote in the primary? Some races, like many judicial races, can be decided in the primary if enough people vote. We need to get pro-choice candidates through the primary and on to the general election.

Help us mobilize pro-choice voters across the state by making calls during the following days and times:

Friday, July 30 - 10am-5pm
Monday, August 2 - 10am-8pm
Tuesday, August 3 - 10am-8pm
Wednesday, August 4 - 10am-8pm
Thursday, August 5 - 10am-8pm
Tuesday, August 10 - 10am-8pm
Wednesday, August 11 - 10am-8pm
Thursday, August 12 - 10am-8pm
Friday, August 13 - 10am-5pm
Monday, August 16 - 10am-8pm
All phone banks will take place at our office in Downtown Seattle. For more information or to sign up, contact me at (206) 624-1990 or EleazarJuarez-Diaz@prochoicewashington.org.

Not able to volunteer for the primary election? Believe it or not, it is not too early to sign up to help us with the general election! For a full list of those days and times, please contact me for more information.

In solidarity,

Eleazar Juárez-Díaz

45. Economic Opportunity Institute needs two volunteers (or just one really smart one)

Are you good with graphic design and/or javascript? Looking to build your portfolio? Excited about volunteering some time for a good cause? Then consider helping me with with some of EOI's graphic design and scripting needs!

1) Graphic design: We would like to add some energy and style to EOI fact sheets -- making them easier to read. Just send me an email with some samples of your work, and I'll be in touch.

2) Javascript expert: Well, you don't have to be an expert -- but you would have to know your way around javascript. I've started a few projects, so send me an email to indicate your interest and we'll go from there!

Thanks,

49. Seattle Young People's Project needs volunteers for workshops
Greetings SYPP supporters!

Seattle Young People's Project is excited to be launching our 6th annual Summer Youth Organizing Institute (YO!) next week, and we need your help! We have 27 young people signed up to participate, and almost all the workshop schedules and logistics are figured out. However...

We are still looking for a number of volunteers to help with both workshop facilitation and logistics. Here are the details:

WORKSHOPS

We have a cool idea for a "Current Events Speed Dating" workshop, but to make it happen we need up to 11 volunteers for Friday, August 20th, from 10:30am-11:45am. Each volunteer will have a "station" and will take on a current event subject, and will be providing 5 minute summaries of the subject to rotating groups of youth, on a repeating basis. This will require about an hour of work, and maybe an hour of prep time from home. We will provide the formatting for how to present the information, but it might require some basic research on volunteers' part.

Topics that youth have asked for in this workshop: the gulf coast and the oil spill; immigration struggles; police brutality; anti-youth laws; the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond; Palestine and Israel; food justice issues; water justice issues; attacks against Muslim communities; climate change; Google/Verizon and net neutrality; the struggles for LGBTQ rights beyond marriage; and the causes of the economic crisis
If you have any particular skills in either specific creative organizing tactics, or in skills related to radical art and media, we might be able to use your help with workshops on Sunday and Monday, August 22-23rd.

If you might be available to help us, please respond to this email or call us (206.860.9606) ASAP and we can fill you in with additional details.

LOGISTICS

From Wednesday, August 18th-Monday, August 23rd, we are looking for volunteers who can help for one hour (noon-1pm) with lunch logistics. Cars or at least driver's licenses are very helpful.
We are looking for a certified lifeguard to help supervise swimming activities at our overnight retreat, just outside of Seattle, on Tuesday, August 24th.
If you might be available to help us, please respond to this email or call us (206.860.9606) ASAP and we can fill you in with additional details.

We are extremely grateful for all the varieties of support that you provide to SYPP so that we can keep doing our youth organizing and empowerment work, and we are appreciative for whatever folks can contribute to making this year's YO! another success!

Thank you!

SYPP YO! Planning Team

Seattle Young People's Project is a youth-led, adult-supported, social justice organization that empowers young people (ages 13-19) to express themselves and take action on the issues that affect their lives. The Youth Organizing Institute is an annual 8-day youth activist summer program that trains 20-25 young people in the skills and consciousness to organize for positive change.

50. Bicycle Alliance work party in Seattle 8/26
Be a Volunteer Superhero!

OK, we don’t actually have any openings for volunteers to be superheroes, but we have all sorts of events and activities coming up that you can help out with. Check our blog for latest opportunities, which include, for example, helping to run a rest stop in Tukwila, handing out ice cream in Tacoma, and hanging out with bike racers in Seattle. Email Katie {at} bicyclealliance.orgfor more details on upcoming events.

Plus we’ve got the usual Month-End Work Party coming right up on August 26th in our office from 4:00 to 7:00, with an orientation for new volunteers at 5:00. The Month-End Work Party will involve food and about 400 envelopes and inserts. RSVP to Katie at Katie@bicyclealliance.org.

52. Cannabis Defense Coalition needs volunteers for a number of projects
Below is a list of CDC projects and member committees in need of energy and organizing. Consider taking a bite out of the leadership pie.

Adopt-A-Street Project. Needs: one or more leaders to organize clean-up days.

The CDC already adopted a section of State Route 169, the Maple Valley Highway. The City of Seattle has a similar program, and the CDC recently adopted a one-mile stretch of Occidental Avenue from Yesler (Occidental Park) through Holgate (where Mariners fans start walking en masse). We need to decide on locations for our two signs, and we need to clean our street at least four times a year.

Bail Bonding Project. Needs: one volunteer to get insurance quotes, $400 in funding double-matched by donor.

Some of our greatest projects start as jokes. After thirty minutes researching the logistics of this joke, the group decided that we absolutely must apply to become a bail bonding agency. The notion of calling up a jail and demanding the release of a medical marijuana patient is a pretty theory; in reality we hope it will be mind blowing. We need to fundraise the $1,200 application fee, and secure a $10k insurance bond. A donor has agree to double-match all donations, so we only need to fundraise $400 and get the insurance.

Cannabis Resource Center Project. Needs: leaders with permitting and contracting experience, construction plans and permits, a functional office and bathrooms.

We need to get our construction projects moving forward. Critical milestones for the Cannabis Resource Center include a functional office and ADA-compliant bathrooms. Until we create a comfortable, inviting central command center, the CDC will be scattered and discombobulated, complicating everything we do and hope to do. If we can make this happen, push this through, Seattle and our state will be forever changed.

Case Tracking Project. Needs: multiple leaders to consistently track cases involving medical cannabis patients.

Our core activism is tracking medical cannabis prosecutions throughout Washington State. Some months we do this well, and some months we do this poorly. Failing at our core activism makes us feel bad, all around. We need people who can track one or more cases, keep in telephone and/or email contact with defendants and attorneys, and update our google calendar with upcoming court dates.

Media committee. Needs: leaders adept at facebook, twitter, myspace, press releases and traditional media.

One of our goals is to keep cannabis at the forefront of social and political dialogue. To that end, our media committee can have a tremendous effect, with almost no financial investment. Every week we miss opportunities to inform news organizations and the blogosphere about important news about cannabis in Washington State. We get press inquiries which go ignored. If we had a small number of active leaders on the media committee, all of this could change overnight.

MQAC Petition Project. Needs: $2,500 in funding matched by donor.

We were hoping that our petition to add a qualifying condition to our medical marijuana law would simply be approved. Then we could boast about how we made such a grand impact with so little money. Unfortunately, our petition was denied. From the start of this project we intended to "go all the way" and appeal a negative decision, and now we're forced to walk our talk. After some searching, we have hired an administrative appeals lawyer for a reduced flat rate of $5,000. A donor has agreed to match all donations, meaning we need to raise $2,500 to pay the piper.

Treasury committee. Needs: multiple leaders with bookkeeping or accounting experience.

Our treasurer is keeping his head above waters, but it's a fair amount of effort for him to do so. The CDC accounting needs to be more of a group effort. We track everything in Quickbooks, and the accounting is relatively simple -- no employees, payroll or complicated assets. The treasurer's biggest concern is the various projects that need to collect and track retail sales tax (cafe, patient retail, etc). We haven't actually filed our state excise taxes for 2009, and need to catch up on some of the things our treasurer is failing to accomplish alone.

I wish it would involve explicit advocacy for public goods, rather than cowering whenever the nutjobs start whining about "taxing and spending." It is the governments EFFING JOB to provide public goods, which by definition involves taxing people and spending the resulting income on public goods.

People in San Bruno didn't die of taxation--they died of the childish refusal to pay attention to the maintenance of their gasline infrastructure. (Yes, PG&E is a private company, but the government is supposed to excercise oversight.) Paying for that oversight is just another of those non-fun things that adults are supposed to do, like cleaning the gutters and changing the furnace filter.

CAGJ's Food Justice Project wins Satterberg Grant for Community Education

The Food Justice Project is celebrating a recent grant award by engaging you in education for food justice! A $5,000 grant from the Satterberg Foundation will support the Community Education piece of FJP's work, allowing us to acquire needed supplies (our very own projector for multimedia, workshop space, and training materials), train activists on messaging and how to educate for political action, and more! Our Community Education project is focused on developing some standard workshops/activities that we're developing to respond to requests to do presentations at various venues, and eventually to do outreach and offer this to the community at large to continue to build the movement for food justice. Get involved in developing these workshops! Do a bit of research (or call on your own expertise) on a specific issue of your choice to develop a "module" to plug and play into a general workshop framework, depending on audience. Or, sign-up to take part in the "train the trainer" sessions to happen later this year on presenting to the community, and become an educator for food justice. 59. Community Alliance for Global Justice needs volunteers
CAGJ SEEKING VOLUNTEERS
CAGJ seeks passionate, committed, talented & fun people to help us thrive and organize! For all volunteer opportunities, please contact us here: volunteer {at} seattleglobaljustice.org

Top Volunteer Needs:
*Join Events Organizing Committee! Help us plan our 10th Anniversary Party & a possible Urban Hike-a-Thon!
*Be our Treasurer! Great way to get job skills! We have a book-keeper; the Treasurer helps to provide guidance to the Steering Committee, and supports our budgeting process.
*E-Newsletter Editor: Help the Director produce the newsletter the last week of every month
*Coordinate our Book Group! Help choose books, send out reminders, identify facilitators! A great low-responsibility role for someone who wants to help us get our minds working!
*Help out at our booth at Seattle Tilth Harvest Fair: Sat Sept 10
*Help out regularly at the office: we need new data-entry assistance and other support for our Director!

THANK YOU!

61. Seattle Young People's Project needs volunteers
The Education Justice Campaign

SYPP members are still building their campaign to transform school discipline policies in Seattle schools! Our campaign meetings are open to all youth, and they take place every Wednesday at 4:00pm at the SYPP office. If you're new to the campaign be sure to let us know you're coming!

Strong Families Northwest Cohort

We have the honor of being accepted into the first Strong Families NW cohort being convened by the Western States Center. We'll be working with Got Green?, Community 2 Community, and Catalyst for Kids. We're excited to build a movement for Strong Families!

Project Liberation
Since 2005, SYPP's teams of youth and adult facilitators have offered community workshops on a range of social justice topics, from Youth Empowerment 101, to Undoing Homophobia and Transphobia. Are you interested in helping to coordinate our next Training for Trainers? We need a few good youth and adults to pull this together. Check out http://sypp.org/programs/ project-liberation/ or email us at volunteers {at} sypp.org for more info.

Volunteer Opportunities
With so much in the works at SYPP, we're in steady need of adult volunteer support! Do you have a few free hours a month to help SYPP, whether it means helping to give rides, helping maintain the office, or making signs and decorations for SYPP actions? If you're interested, please email our volunteer coordinator Mo Avery at volunteers {at} sypp.org
