Seattle hits 102 -- Welcome to the hottest day ever
Source: KOMO-TV

SEATTLE -- It's a day for the weather history books. For on July 29, 2009, Sea-Tac Airport hit 102 degrees just after 2 p.m. for the hottest day on record in Seattle, with records stretching back to 1891.

The previous records were 100 degrees set July 20, 1994, July 16, 1941, and June 9, 1955*.

It's the second all-time weather record set on Wednesday in Seattle. The lowest temperature recorded so far today was 71 degrees, and it's a safe bet we won't drop below that before midnight tonight. That means we have shattered the record for warmest low temperature which was set... Tuesday.

43. That might not be the best idea...
Alcohol hurts the body's temperature regulation system. It may sound like a good idea to have a tall cold one, but it could prevent your body from fighting off heatstroke.

44. Also...
...I'll bet every house and apartment there comes with central air, or at least a window unit. Housing in Seattle practically never does; in fact, most houses are designed for holding in the heat (for winter). Even when this heat wave breaks (which may be as late as a week from tomorrow according to current forecasts), it will still take a day or two for most newly-built houses up here to have their internal temperatures return to normal.

It's not just a "freak out," it's that the whole infrastructure here makes extreme heat a lot harder to deal with than in the southwest or other places were as much emphasis is placed on cooling systems as on providing and maintaining heating.

11. The view from the Eastside (South Bellevue)...
It's nice and toasty here in South Bellevue...

Last winter, we had to cancel Christmas due to a freak snowstorm that stranded (most of) the populace in our homes for two weeks and finally receeded around about New Year's Day.

At the time, I said that I cannot wait until the heat wave in July (to make up for the snow.)

IMHO, there should be one 90 + degree day in summer for every snow-filled day and/or night in winter. Not gonna happen here in the Puget Sound area, but it ought to! It's only fair!

But for today (and all of this week - the Weather Service extended the Excessive Heat Advisory to Friday at 6 pm from Thursday at 6 pm), I be one happy camper! Viva la HEAT!!!!

19. But Global Warming doesn't exist.....
Many of the right wingers have been pointing to the unusually wet and cool Spring and Summer in the Northeast as evidence that global warming is cyclical and a farce.

What they fail to understand is while it is called global warming because the overall average global temperature is higher by some few degrees Celsius, the result is catastrophic.

It doesn't necessarily mean that it is going to be hot everywhere. What it means is that due to the increase in average global temperatures you will have much more erratic weather, more extreme weather (hot and cold) and yes, on average, the temperatures are going up.

I lived in Seattle and never missed A/C because even when it would climb into the upper 80s on a pristine summer day, there was low humidity and once the sun went down the temperatures plunged to the point that you needed a light jacket in the evenings to be outdoors and I would arise in the middle of the night to close the window because I was cold.

I now live in Atlanta and am of course surrounded by A/C everywhere. For those of you living in places with higher temperatures than Seattle (and the rest of the NW for that matter) remember that few homes have A/C and the population isn't used to these kinds of temperatures. I am prepared for days on end of 90+ temperatures with 70% humidity. My body has somewhat acclimated and I can always retire to my A/C home with ceiling fans.

Seattlites aren't acclimated to this heat! seriously, those that are teasing us aren't aware of the principles of acclimation, which affects animals even more, so I feel really bad for them!

It was actually nice eating my lunch by Lake Union, but being prone to migraines I can't enjoy the sun for too long, always a bummer in the summer.

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=97086&hourly=1&yday=209&weekday=Wednesday

Oh wait, perhaps I should drive up to Seattle to cool off! :)

Costco told me today that there were fights over who should get a crack at the shipments of air conditioners that came in this morning around 10:00 AM... I made the mistake of coming by at 11:00 AM which the web site said was the time they opened the warehouse, but 10:00 AM was when you had to get it when they opened it to exec members...

They're sold out everyplace around here...

And earlier this winter we set records for cold weather in December shortly after I moved here... Oh no, we don't have any kind of climate change. It's all a 'natural cycle'!!!

I guess I'm thankful that I'm no longer living near fire zones any more like I was in North County of San Diego. But I can't remember dealing with being in conditions this hot and humid since I lived in Bangkok as a kid. And that was back in the 60's and we had central A/C then...

I'm REALLY thankful that I still have a very old 10-15 year old portable air conditioning unit that I used to use in a "computer room" a while back, and has probably provided me more valuable service this last week than it has the previous years I've owned it. But it is funky having to pour out the water it generates every few hours, and its noisy as hell trying to sleep with. And the bedroom windows in this house I have don't have very good blinds to block out the sun in the mornings here close to the land of the midnight sun. So sometimes its "work" trying to get a good "morning"'s sleep too in this situation. Had hoped to get a newer one for the bedroom and move this downstairs to get the rest of the place a little cooler, but I'm at least thankful for what I have now compared to others around here.

And to think just a few weeks ago Costco had a sale on A/C's in their last coupon book. Had we only known then...

54. I had to cross the Cascades for one
I live with my 84-yo grandmother. Obviously I had no idea how she would take the heat. I called many, many stores here yesterday, and it quickly became evident that everything in the Seattle/Tacoma area was sold out. So it quickly became evident that I'd need to cross the mountains over to Yakima.

Since it's regularly 100 there, there was one left for me to get for her. It's a portable one, the kind with the exhaust hose, and I actually didn't pay that bad a price for it. I took her with me for obvious reasons (namely not leaving her alone in 95+ weather for 6+ hours) so she, the day before believing her "travelling days" were completely over, got in one last trip. :)

Cooling centers wouldn't necessarily work for me because I can't ALWAYS be home to take her to one, let alone loiter there for two hours.

And it'll be available should this kind of shit happen in the future, too :)

I'm not concerned for people like myself or my parents, but for the elderly and the homeless. Many senior centers don't have air conditioning, and other than public libraries and shelters the homeless are pretty much shit out of luck (though SPD has been handing out bottled water.)

57. It's about 60 here
Summers in the SF Bay Area aren't worth showing up for. Seems like we're the only place on the planet that isn't affected by this bizarre climate change. All day long I've worn a sweatshirt and fleece pants.

Mr Pip is on his way to a remote control airplane meet in Oregon and is not thrilled about sitting in 100 degree heat. Worse for those who are living through this.

Stay cool everyone. Send us some of your heat. We'd appreciate it.

61. Saw Harry Potter today. Bruno yesterday
More movie going in the last week than in the last year! Only 13% of homes in this area have air conditioning. As the old saying goes "You just might be from the Pacific Northwest if you know more people with boats than with air conditioning."

64. And here in TN
we're having rain everyday and highs in the low-mid 80's and upper 60's at night. We should be having the 100 degree heat and lower humidity. For someone like me who has lived 35 years in the same place, I can see clear changes in weather patterns.
