* BELLINGHAM , WA (January 15, 2010)*

Larry Kalb , a longtime resident of Bellingham , announced his candidacy for Congress today to become the representative of the 2nd Congressional District of Washington State. His decision represents a direct challenge to the incumbent Congressman.

“Our congressman has let us down!” says Kalb. “He has handed over his political authority to legislate to lobbyists for big business and then showered them with taxpayer money to boot. He’s too expensive to keep in office. The pending health ‘insurance’ legislation, which lobbyists authored, represents the largest shifting of citizens’ money to corporate interests in the history of this nation.”

Kalb, 55, works in the Finance Department for Whatcom Transportation Authority and has lived in Bellingham for 16 years. He has been active in numerous community and civic issues, most recently as the President of Health Care for All – Washington , a statewide organization advocating single-payer health care.

“Larsen continues to defer to corporate and monied interests and we, the constituents of the 2nd Congressional District, are paying for this transfer of power,” asserts Kalb. “He’s done this with the credit card companies, the first economic stimulus package, the emergency war funding and, most recently, with health care reform legislation.”

Asked about health care reform specifically Kalb said: “The people of my district want to get Wall Street Medicine out of their doctor’s office, but instead my congressman pledged his allegiance to the insurance companies by giving them a profit windfall worth hundreds of billions of dollars on the backs of us taxpayers and that’s wrong. My motto is ‘equal access, equal care - regardless of our station in life.’ I believe our money should go to getting more health care services, not making middlemen richer!”

Kalb lived in Europe for 11 years before moving to Bellingham . During his residency there he had an opportunity to experience first hand the economic benefits of universal access to health care. “A whole layer of our economy is missing in comparison,” says Kalb. “Other nations depend on the intellectual initiative of a healthy citizenry to create domestic economic expansion, but with our health care system it retracts. And politicians always talk about creating more jobs. That can’t happen under our system of profit-based medicine.”

Kalb also differs sharply with the incumbent over expenditures on wars. “We could use the $160 billion dollars my congressman slated for more war in Afghanistan to stimulate job growth or to build a light-rail system from Blaine to Seattle .” Kalb pointed out. “Our roads are already congested and the erosion of transportation improvement funds promises to make our air quality worse, causing more kids to be treated for asthma. A good steward of public funds would provide child care programs for young working moms and dads who struggle to set-up a household, or enable cash-strapped high school graduates the financial means to study a skill or profession of their choice, or even help those families facing foreclosure to keep their house.”

Asked about his number one goal if elected, Kalb said, “During my tenure I will work fiercely to take down every for sale sign from the halls of Congress by supporting campaign finance reform legislation that brings sovereignty in line with what matters most to us voters, namely stable homes, secure livelihoods and protection of our health.”

“This is our home. We have a right to just governance.”

LARRY KALB DECRIES WASTING TAXPAYER DOLLARS ON UNWINNABLE CIVIL WAR

CALLS FOR END TO AFGHANISTAN WAR FUNDING

BELLINGHAM--Larry Kalb, candidate to replace Rick Larsen in Washington's Second Congressional District, spoke out today against further funding of the "folly in Afghanistan". Unlike Rep. Rick Larsen who voted last week to maintain troops in Afghanistan, Kalb would have voted to invoke the 1973 War Powers Act to bring the troops quickly and safely home.

"Our spending priorities are warped", said Kalb. "We need to fund jobs at home, not occupations abroad. Last week, Rep. Rick Larsen once again voted against the interests and values of the American taxpayer. Taxpayers must bear the costs of this wasteful war. The people oppose the war in Afghanistan - polls show that. But, those who profit from the war--military-based corporations and the Congress they control--perpetuate it. It's time to replace people like Rick Larsen that place higher priority on courting financiers than fixing the many problems created by those very same people. I will focus on fixing those problems. The people will be my only lobby."

Kalb stated that Afghanistan had deteriorated into an unwinnable civil war between different corrupt powers and that even the Pentagon has concluded that the path out is political and diplomatic, rather than military. "The lives and dollars being wasted to pursue roughly 100 members of Al-Qaida in Afghanistan are tragic. Every dollar spent there is a dollar better spent here on jobs, renewable energy, healthcare, education and in fixing our aging infrastructure."

In addition to focusing our attention here at home, Kalb said, we do have a responsibility to help rebuild what we destroyed in Afghanistan. "It's the right thing to do and it will help heal our relationship with the Afghan people."

A statement made last week by General Stanley McChrystal best illustrates the travesty of our tax dollars wasted in Afghanistan. In essence, the General declared that, since opium farmers were such an important constituency and element in the Afghan economy, the U.S. would buy up this year's opium crop to keep it out of the hands of the Taliban. Then, it would try to convince them to grow something else next year. "This is madness!" said Kalb.

5. Congressional Candidate Larry Kalb Calls Health Insurance Reform Bill a "Mixed Bag"

A VICTORY FOR THE MOST NEEDY
BUT ALSO A VICTORY FOR "POLITICS AS USUAL"

BELLINGHAM--Larry Kalb, candidate to replace Rick Larsen in Washington's Second Congressional District, declared today that the Health Insurance Reform legislation passed Sunday was a "mixed bag." Kalb understands why it passed because it "helps a lot of people ", but he claims that it also shows Congress is still "in the pocket of special interests."

"I'm delighted to see that children can no longer be denied coverage and that insurance plans will no longer carry arbitrary annual and lifetime spending limits", said Kalb. "There are many good things about this legislation, but it falls far short of reforming a broken system. This is a victory for health insurance companies and their lobbyists. It perpetuates Wall Street Medicine by forcing 32 million more Americans to buy into overpriced insurance plans. The insurance companies win. They don't care whether the premiums are partly subsidized by the government. They just gained 32 million new customers. Unfortunately, this is a massive taxpayer giveaway to the very industry that has caused the healthcare cost calamity."

Kalb stated that the bill does very little to bring healthcare costs into line. "Affordability is a huge issue for most Americans as well as many businesses, and many will have no choice but to pay the penalty which is lower than the premium." Nor does it greatly advance the cause of "equal access, equal care", a cause Kalb has been championing for years. "This reform at the very least needs competition from a low overhead, non-profit public plan. That's what the people want. Bills running thousands of pages will always do the bidding of special interests. Rep. Alan Grayson's refreshingly simple 4-page bill will allow any American to buy into Medicare at actual cost. It will fit in perfectly with the insurance exchanges and could actually be implemented soon, without the huge delay entailed in the current legislation. Why is Rick Larsen not among the co-sponsors of this bill?"

"Medicare for All is really the bare minimum we need," said Kalb. Every poll ever taken shows more Americans support a Medicare-For-All system than oppose it. And, 80% of we Democrats support it. "When I am in Congress, I will fight for quality health care for all. Every voter in my district, in fact every American, should have the same quality health care coverage as the members of Congress already enjoy.

7. Campaign kickoff 4/9 in Bellingham
Kalb for Congress - Campaign Kickoff
Friday, April 9, 2010 - 5:00 to 7:00p.m.
At the Blue Horse Gallery
301 W Holly Street, in downtown Bellingham.

Many of us are displeased with what the US House of Representatives has been doing in recent years (or maybe better, what they have not done even though a majority of the voters believe they should.)

How to change that? There's two ways
the people make requests of the elected Representatives
and if that has not worked, replace them with new Representatives who truly represent the will of the people.
Rick Larsen has been there ten years, and has not made much significant change in the ways most of the voters want. He had his chance -- it is time for him to be replaced.

Please support the challenger, a Real Democrat, Larry Kalb of Bellingham.

Kalb will hold his Whatcom County Campaign Kickoff event on April 9th, 2010 at 5:p.m. at the Blue Horse Gallery, 301 W Holly Street in downtown Bellingham. Come meet and chat with Larry, and contribute what you can to his campaign.

This website has lots of information about Larry and his positions. You may also "Friend" his candidacy at the campaign Facebook page

Larry's most significant issues are:
Jobs: The number one priority right now is to get people back to work.
Troops Home: The occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan is wrong and must end, now.
Health Care: Equal Access – Equal Care. We must put you and your doctor back in control of your medical decisions. The legislation passed March 22nd was a "mixed bag."
Clean Air, Water, and Land: Climate change is the most serious challenge facing humanity.
Fair Elections: Campaign Finance Reform & Paper Ballots. Require publicly-financed campaigns, to limit the power that corporations exercise over campaigns.
Fix the Immigration System: The U.S. immigration system: indiscriminate raids, detention without due process, worker exploitation and families being separated must be stopped.

8. U.S. Congressional Candidate Larry Kalb Reaches Out to U.S. Navy Bases
MONDAY, APRIL 19, 2010

U.S. Congressional Candidate Larry Kalb Reaches Out to U.S. Navy Bases in Everett and Oak Harbor

Larry Kalb, Democratic candidate to replace Rick Larsen in Washington's 2nd Congressional District, spent Friday and Saturday visiting important Naval facilities in the District. On Friday, April 16, Kalb visited Naval Station Everett and on Saturday, April 17, he visited Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

In Everett, Kalb attended the "State of the Station" luncheon, marking the 16th anniversary of the Navy's most modern facility. After lunch, he toured the nuclear-powered carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

Kalb stated that visiting the naval facilities was "a priority, not only because of their vital role in national defense, but because the Navy is the District's second largest employer. I really enjoyed meeting with the sailors and the base commanders. Listening to sailors relate their experiences overseas, their challenges upon coming home, and the details of and concerns about future deployments was incredibly valuable. These are sharp people who are serving our country well. Never mistake my opposition to the unnecessary wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as a lack of support for our troops. I will be a champion for our troops. And, we can best serve those who serve our country by bringing and keeping them home."

An ardent supporter of clean and renewable energy, Kalb stated he was pleased to learn more details of the Navy's "energy conservation efforts and desire to wean itself from oil. I am impressed by the Navy's 'Green Fleet' initiative and enthusiastic about its embrace of the highest Green Building Council standards, that use solar, wind and geothermal energy."

On Whidbey, Larry toured the Naval Air Station and met with helicopter search and rescue personnel. He was impressed by the ”technological wizardry" of the advanced EA-18G Growler aircraft and by the "maintenance magic" performed on the outdated EA-6B Prowler aircraft it is replacing. "Why can't we take care of our crumbling infrastructure and our educational, health care and retirement systems like the US military maintains 40 year-old fighter jets and aircraft carriers? It all depends what we prioritize as a country."

Later, on Saturday, Kalb had dinner with members of the local council of The Navy League of the United States, a civilian organization which educates our citizens and elected officials, and supports the men and women of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines, and their families.

Also, this weekend, Larry attended Tulip Festival activities in Skagit County, where he talked to voters about their issues and priorities. "Listening to them confirmed to me that Rick Larsen is vulnerable. Very few approve of the job that the incumbent and Congress are doing. They are tired of seeing special interests hold sway over the public interest".

12. Kalb sez--help Marcy Winograd too
Dear Friends,

In the spirit of progressive candidates supporting each other, I'm writing to ask if you would make a few calls this weekend for Marcy Winograd's campaign.

The California primary is this Tuesday, June 8 and Marcy's in a tight race. Her values and positions are closely aligned with mine, and our show of support now could yield some reciprocation as we get closer to our own primary. We'll also be helping the efforts of Progressive Democrats of America to get more progressives into Congress.

Even just 10 calls would be really helpful. If you can make 25, that's wonderful.

If you can make some calls this weekend, please email Caroline Cole right away at Caroline@pdamerica.org and she will tell you how to access the phone numbers online.

Caroline has been a great help to my campaign, working as our campaign advisor, and she is helping to organize Progressive Democrats of America's national phone bank for Marcy Winograd's campaign as well.

Many thanks for supporting real progressive candidates so that we can strengthen the progressive voice in Washington, D.C.

I hope to see you soon along the campaign trail!

13. Larsen blasted for defense spending vote
http://networkedblogs.com/4wbyK

2nd CD challenger, Larry Kalb, has blasted incumbent Democratic Congressman, Rick Larsen over his recent vote to add additional money to the 2011 defense budget submitted by President Obama. The increased spending would come from a requirement to procure a 2nd sourced engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter; a requirement strongly opposed by both Obama and his Secretary of Defense, Bob Gates. In a press release issued yesterday, Kalb says,

"This is pure pork. It is a sad commentary on the control that military contractors have over Congress when the House votes for an engine the Pentagon clearly doesn't want. Defense Secretary Robert Gates considers the second engine program so wasteful that he is urging President Obama to veto the entire 2011 defense appropriation of $760 billion, if the second engine survives the House-Senate reconciliation committee...

"This clearly shows that Larsen and other members of the Armed Services Committee are in bed with the war machine. Indeed, they are part of it. People in our district and across the country continue to suffer from the huge economic deficit caused by the unnecessary and unproductive wars we're mired in. Funding this 'bridge to nowhere' only makes that situation worse."

18. PDA America Brown Bag vigil 7/21 in Bellingham
Please come out and support Larry Kalb at the Progressive Democrats of America "Brown Bag Lunch Vigil" in front of Rick Larsen's Bellingham office this Wednesday, July 21, from
12 noon to 1 pm.

In conjunction with the Vigil, there will be a local PDA endorsement meeting to consider endorsing Larry as Rick Larsen's progressive Democratic challenger in our district. Since there is another candidate in the race, it's important that we come out and show our support for Larry.

By being present at the Vigil, you will:

(a) Show your support for Larry Kalb, his stance against putting more U.S. troops into Afghanistan, and his plan to finally wean our country off its dependence on oil;

(b) Voice your outrage over endless war as a central strategy of U.S. foreign policy;

(c) Voice your desire for real leadership to end our dependence on oil and transition to an energy-efficient, sustainable energy future.

Following is more information about the Vigil from PDA.

Many thanks and all best wishes,

Sharon

BBLV for a responsive representative in WA-02

This is the latest of a series of "Third Wednesday" demonstrations
to protest the wars and promote progressive causes.

This month, we will also draw attention to the totally preventable BP catastrophe and
call for a commitment to an Apollo-type program to fully develop clean sources
of energy so that we can phase out fossil fuel usage within ten years.

The three-month anniversary of BP oil disaster is July 20.
Coincidentally, July 20 is also the 41st anniversary of the Apollo moon landing
of “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" fame.

The Apollo program was an example of American aspiration, dedication and focus at its finest. We set a national goal of landing a man on the moon within a decade, and we did it even though not landing there would have posed no danger to our people or our planet.

Our people and planet now are in danger and must be saved. We will demand that the federal government take action and establish a similarly ambitious program
for breaking our fossil-fuel addiction in this decade.

Since Representative Larsen has been completely unresponsive to the letters delivered to his office over the past seven months and has not taken the actions requested, we will hold an endorsement meeting in conjunction with this BBLV to consider endorsing one of his progressive Democratic challengers in the 2nd CD.

Therefore, please make a special effort to attend.
Register for the BBLV here. https://www.thedatabank.com/dpg/309/personalopt1.asp?formid=meet&c=2066546

20. How about some LTEs to the Everett Herald?
Dear Friends,

If you would like to submit a comment on this thread at the Everett Herald, it's an opportunity for us to get some press in the Everett Herald and to show how Larry stands apart from Larsen and Koster.

You can "reply" to the comment thread started by Chad Shue about Larry's campaign video.

Here's the link:

With thanks and best wishes,

Sharon

22. The San Juan Journal Endorses Larry Kalb
http://www.pnwlocal news.com/ sanjuans/ jsj/opinion/ 100444539. html

U.S. House of Representatives, District 2:
Rick Larsen and Larry Kalb

Larsen, D-Bellingham, has served our district well in his five terms: the Wild Sky Wilderness Act, which protects 106,000 acres of wild lands in the heart of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest; a Veterans Administration outpatient clinic for veterans in San Juan, Skagit and Whatcom counties; the transfer of Mitchell Hill to San Juan Island National Historical Park; and pending funding for pedestrian and vehicle traffic improvements at the Friday Harbor ferry terminal.

He’s pushed for legislation to prevent and treat meth addiction. He supported the Wall Street Transparency and Accountability Act. He’s a member of key committees: Armed Services, Transportation and Infrastructure, and Budget.

Democrat Kalb, past president of Health Care for All — Washington , presents the biggest challenge to Larsen, and he presents the most radical ideas.

Kalb wants to renegotiate our free trade agreements to improve exports and keep more jobs from going overseas. He opposes recent healthcare reform legislation and believes Americans should have the same access to quality health care that members of Congress do. “Americans have the highest drug prices in the world. We should eliminate direct-to-consumer advertising.”

His vision of immigration reform: reform visa programs to keep families together, protect workers’ rights and ensure that future immigration is regulated and controlled; implement enforcement measures targeted at the worst violators of immigration and labor laws; and respect the due process rights of all in the United States .

We’d like to see the issues discussions continue between Larsen and Kalb.
