http://www.seattlepi.com/local/417782_refine02.htmlANACORTES -- An explosion and fire at the Tesoro Refinery shook homes and shot flames into the night sky early Friday, killing three people and critically injuring four others.
The refinery's human resources manager John McDarment said the blaze erupted in the catalytic reformer naptha hydrotreater unit of the complex at approximately 12:30 a.m. while 10 workers were performing maintenance work in the area.
"Basically, it's the part of the refinery that turns crude oil into gasoline," he said.
McDarment said refinery crews put out the fire within two hours, and the area has been stabilized.
All four injured workers were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where the two men and two women between the ages of 29 and 41 were listed in critical condition with major burns. The dead have not been been identified, and the cause of the explosion has not been determined.
