5. Depens where you go

Pretty much anything east of the mountains is pretty darn redneck. If you go onto the Snohomish Herald web site where the entire state posts on the comment section, it can be pretty fox newsish. I think that in this neck of the woods, most of the kooks are just old people. You might run into your odd loon republican from time to time, but I'm sure it's nothing like Georgia.

FAR fewer churches, for 1. the libertarian bent engenders more of a live and let live attitude.

6. The dichotomy here is a bit dismaying

I moved to the west of Seattle, on the other side of Puget Sound. The area is one of the most beatiful I have ever seen. Each day I am surprised by another nature that takes my breath away. Right now as I look out my window I can see the alpine peaks of the Olympics. Gorgeous.

But the politics...not so much. Since there are Navy installations scattered all over this area there is a very strong authoritarian bent. Maybe not so much in numbers but definitely strong in enthusiasm.

Recently the governor suggested a $.25 (a quarter) monthly levy on the phone bill to update an antiquated 911 system. You would think we had been asked to donate a kidney. And that's for less than the cost of a beer. A year.

And I won't even mention the dollars they were asked locally for the library, parks, or to reduce pollution in the Hood Canal.

Lord.

Good luck - and welcome ... the beauty makes it all worthwhile. The culture and restaurants in Seattle don't hurt, either.

the scenery is breath taking. Every day we get an amazing view of the mountains...

I live on the Eastside and like it here don't plan on moving anytime soon.

The wife and I moved here about nine months ago from Missouri.
Love it here, a breath of fresh air does not begin to describe it.
Glad the job would be moving with you, as jobs are not the easiest thing to find out here.
And the cost of living is higher here, but not unbearably so. The quality of life here is worth far more than that to us.

10. Well it's June 17th and I had to light a fire in the wood stove this morning

It was just too fricken cold. I love it here btw but sometimes the dampness gets to my old bones. But temps in the upper 40's in June is just not right.

11. Refugees from red states are always welcome! Actually, Seattle

is an island unto itself. By and large the state is conservative. King County, which includes Seattle, is really the only "blue" county. That said, much of King County, particularly the eastern and southern sections, are conservative. Snohomish County to the north of King County, and Pierce County to the south, are both conservative - primarily due to military installations. The entire eastern half of the state is staunchly republican territory.

Despite the presence of conservatives; this is a beautiful part of the country! There aren't too many places in the world where you can snow ski in the morning, have lunch in an urban downtown, and have dinner at the ocean - all on the same day. You will notice a certain stand-offish-ness here; this is not the south, that's for darn sure. Unless you go door to door and introduce yourself, you may live for years not knowing who your neighbors are. True story! Not only that, when you do go door to door and introduce yourself, many will look at you as if your're crazy. It's rather bizarre.

One of my friend's hails from Atlanta. His job brought him out here three years ago, and he has found bliss here. Even though his entire family remains in Atlanta, he claims he will never return, other than occasional visits. He has made a cazillion friends, bought his first brand new car, and is the proud owner of a four-year old three bedroom, two bath house in Tacoma. So a peach can indeed be transplanted and flourish in a coffee plantation!
