Today is the first day of filing week in Washington State. Between now and Friday, June 11th, you have the rare opportunity to stand for election as a Democratic Precinct Committee Officer (PCO).
PCOs are elected officials of the Democratic Party. They are the Democratic representative for their precinct. A precinct can be as small as a section of a neighborhood or as large as a historical "township," but precincts usually contain 200 to 800 registered voters.
PCOs are the foundation of the Democratic Party. They are the grassroots organizing base for all of our activities. PCOs are essential to Party work, because they personally communicate the Democratic Party message to people in each neighborhood across the state.
PCOs also elect the leadership of their local Democratic County and Legislative District organizations, as well as representatives to the State Democratic Party. Sometimes PCOs are called on to vote to fill vacancies in partisan county and legislative offices.

PCOs are elected positions that appear on the ballot. To become a PCO, you must be voted into office during the Primary Election in even-numbered election years. The next election of PCOs will be on August 17, 2010.
Filing week for the August 2010 Primary Election is today, Monday, June 7th, through Friday, June 11th. To be included on the ballot, you must file a declaration of candidacy during this time. In some counties, you can fill out the declaration of candidacy form online, so the process is much easier.
