7. Ant-Citizens United demonstration in Kent 1/23
January 21, 2011 is the anniversary of the Citizens United decision that opened the floodgates to unlimited campaign contributions by corporations to influence the outcome of our elections. Move To Amend is an association of citizen activists dedicated to overturning Citizens United.

I am working with a group of dedicated volunteers and activists to organize a rally at the Kent Regional Justice Center (401 4th Ave N, Kent, 1/21/2011 - 11am) to mark the anniversary of the SCOTUS decision and to raise awareness of the need for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision. We must establish once and for all the corporations are not entitled to protections afforded to natural persons under the First (or any other) Amendment to the Constitution.

I have attached a flyer annoucing the event, and any assistance you can provide in distributing it as widely as possible will be much appreciated.

In addition, I have attached a resolution calling for a joint resolution from the WA State Legislature that your organization(s) may want to consider adopting.

If any of your organizations are having a meeting between now and the 21st, and if there would be any time on the agenda for me to make a brief announcement, please let me know, so that I can plan to attend.

Yours in solidarity,

8. Iraq Concern network to meet in Seattle 1/8
Interfaith Network of Concern for the People of Iraq (INOC)
A Program Unit of Church Council of Greater Seattle
Keystone United Church of Christ
5019 Keystone Pl N, Seattle, WA 98103
http://www.concernforiraq.org

The INOC general meeting will be held as usual on Saturday, January 8, at 3:00 pm

Review and discussion of recent developments in Iraq.

The following article about Bert and the case of his aid for Iraqis, was published in today's (Jan 05) Seattle Times:

Bruce Ramsey / Times editorial columnist
Bert Sacks vs. the U.S. — why an activist still fights for the Iraqi people
Seattle Times editorial columnist Bruce Ramsey outlines the case of activist Bert Sacks, who violated the economic sanctions on Saddam Hussein's Iraq by donating medicine to hospitals facing a humanitarian disaster.

For most Americans the sanctions imposed on Iraq during the George H.W. Bush years are an old story. Not for Seattle resident Bert Sacks. Sacks, 68, is scheduled to be in federal court in Seattle Sept. 19 because he publicly violated them.

In 1997, during the Clinton years, Sacks and three others carried satchels of medicine for donation to Iraqi hospitals. They did it in full view of the U.S. media, publicly arguing that the sanctions had created a humanitarian disaster in Iraq.

In 2002, the Bush administration went after Sacks, fining him $10,000 for trade with the enemy. The "trade" was not the medicines, but his travel expenses. They were making a federal case of his restaurant meals and taxi rides.

Sacks refused to pay. In 2004, he sued the government, arguing that the blockade of Iraq violated international treaties on human rights. The courts ruled the treaties were not binding.

Now comes the Obama administration, following in the same spirit as the Bush administration. The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control is suing Sacks to collect its $10,000, plus late-payment penalties.

The government almost always wins cases like this. Sacks knows that; his main hope is to have a public forum to question the morality of sanctions. And he has a strong argument.

You can read his arguments at www.iraqikids.org; for a book-length treatment, see Joy Gordon's "Invisible War: The United States and the Iraq Sanctions" (Harvard, 2010). The gist of it is this: Iraq is an oil state that imports almost all the equipment needed for public health. In the 1991 Gulf War, U.S. forces bombed Iraq's drinking-water-treatment, sewage-treatment and electricity-generating plants. Then came sanctions, which blocked the replacement parts. Wrecking the infrastructure of public health was done purposefully, to put pressure on Saddam Hussein — but the real pressure was on the people.

14. 2011 Chinese Expulsion Remembrance Project in Seattle 2/7
2011 Chinese Expulsion Remembrance Project
Brad Wong - chinabrad {at} yahoo.com
Bettie Luke - ocaluke{at} yahoo.com

On a February day in 1886, church bells rang and filled the Seattle air. A mass eviction was to begin. Bands of men took wagons and headed to Washington Street, near Second and Third avenues, and entered the heart of Seattle’s first Chinatown.

They rounded up anyone who looked Chinese – in neighborhood laundries and restaurants, wooden dwellings, meeting rooms. The vigilante men pounded on doors and ordered Chinese on wagons for a ride to a Waterfront dock – for a forced and frenzied removal by ship from Seattle.

What unfolded was one of the most egregious and lawless acts of hatred against ethnic Chinese in Pacific Northwest history. Similar expulsions of Chinese in Tacoma, Bellingham and Olympia also occurred.

February 7, 2011 will mark the 125th anniversary of this largely overlooked but dramatic expulsion of people living in Seattle and other cities in Washington State. A core community group is planning a public education project aimed at understanding this violation of civil rights, the resilience of the Chinese and the span of events that led to their return and reestablishment in the city of Seattle. This anniversary occurs at a time when the issue of immigration to the United States remains unresolved and a recent Arizona law catapulted the topic to the top of public policy agendas

.
The goals of this 2011 Chinese Expulsion Project are:
• Talk about lessons from the expulsion and what they mean for life in 2011
• Discuss progress with U.S. immigration but note more needs to be done, especially given the controversial politics

of the Arizona law, “English Only” edicts and prodding of the 14th Amendment.
• Create an archive of historical documents including relevant stories, laws, photos, publications, research and

acknowledgement of the contributions of Chinese to the city, state and Pacific Northwest
• Reaffirm the idea of equal treatment for all people, including ethnic groups, and create community partnerships

A two-part program is planned for Seattle;
1) Thursday, 2/10/11 evening - A combination Speaker Session and Music Jazz Jam. Event will be prefaced by Chinese Lion Dance teams and the Seattle Chinese Girl's Drill Team performing.
A panel of speakers will speak to historic, cultural, political and social justice issues in relating the Chinese expulsion events to current-day debates on immigration in the US. The closing segment will be a spirited discussion by Jazz Musician Jon Jang, on how he based his recent music compositions on the compelling struggles of Chinese in America. The Jon Jang Quartet will play selected music dedicated to Chinese Railroad workers and immigrants.

2) Saturday, 2/12/11 late AM. Rally and March
Since Chinese were taken to the docks and shipped out of Seattle, we plan a reverse journey - symbolic of publicly taking back our place in the community. We plan to gather at the dockside terminus of S. Washington St. After briefly addressing the purpose of Rally and March, we will proceed to S. Washington Street and 3rd Avenue S. which was the center of the old-time first Chinatown area. We will then march over to Jackson St and into the current International/Chinatown District. Proceeding up S. King St. we will enter Wing Luke Asian Museum for closing Rally speeches by community and political leaders.

Educational Resources Developed for Long-term Use.

Historic exhibit screens will be developed by UW Museology interns, reflecting this story of discrimination against Chinese in Washington State. This exhibit will be portable and displayed in other cities, at expulsion program sites, museum and educational settings.

An audio-visual Multimedia presentation will be developed to set the historic context of the 1886 Chinese expulsion in Seattle, as well as related expulsion events in other Washington State cities - Tacoma, Bellingham and Olympia.

An Expulsion website will post historical research, news, photos and updated information on the expulsion project programs. Check website for updates and new files. http://iexaminer.org/cerp/resources

All educational resources are free and available to educators and the general public

The 2011 Chinese Expulsion Project will support the expulsion programs in Tacoma, Bellingham and Tacoma, with the resources listed above, as well as collaboration on publicity, education and attendance.

18. NARAL Night at the Movies in Seattle 3/2
Want to learn more about this issue? See firsthand how a “crisis pregnancy center” operates and how its deceitful tactics affect women.

SAVE THE DATE:
NARAL Night at the Movies in Seattle
Wednesday, March 2 6:30-8:45pm

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is hosting a free community screening of the documentary 12th & Delaware followed by a brief panel discussion. Directed by the makers of Academy Award-nominated Jesus Camp, 12th & Delaware follows the activity on a quiet, unassuming street corner in Florida where a women’s health clinic stands across from a so-called “crisis pregnancy center.” The film doesn’t take a position on choice – it starts a conversation.

Keep your eyes peeled! Additional info and RSVP information will be available at www.ProChoiceWashington.org soon!

20. Northwest Progressive Institute fundraiser Mercer Island 4/28
http://www.nwprogressive.org/weblog/2011/02/save-date-npis-annual-spring.html

I'm excited to announce this afternoon that we have finalized a date for our Spring Fundraising Gala, which is unquestionably the best opportunity we offer to learn about what we do and support our work. This year's event will be taking place Thursday, April 28th, 2011, at the Community Center at Mercer View.

And yes, that's the same place where last year's event was held.

We figured it made sense to hold it there again because so many folks told us they liked the venue after the conclusion of the 2010 gala. It does have many advantages: it's halfway between Seattle and the Eastside, it's within easy walking distance of transit, and it's a beautiful facility with a well-equipped kitchen.

In the weeks to come, we'll be unveiling more information about the event, including our speaking lineup.

Tickets are, however, going on sale right now at a special early-bird rate; you can buy an individual or household ticket by clicking one of the buttons below. Prices will be going up when additional details are made public, so if you'd like to save a bit of money while securing your seat, now is the time to act.

Individual ticket ($40)
Household ticket ($70):

If you've never been to our gala in the past, picture an eclectic evening with tasty food, jazz music, great company, and speakers like Major General Paul Eaton (Ret)., Darcy Burner, Chip Hanauer, Jon Soltz, Suzan DelBene, Dow Constantine, Hans Dunshee, and John de Graaf. That's what our event is like. It's your chance to meet our staff and board and become better acquainted with other supporters of NPI.

Students who want to volunteer to help put on the event can get in the door free. If you're interested in volunteering, please get in touch with us.

We look forward to seeing you on April 28th!

25. Solidarity rally in Spokane 2/25

got two replies to my query about soldarity rallies in Spokane from a friend active in Spokane EA. In the first he reported a solidarity action and hoped he'd have details of a rally soon. Nine minutes later he had one.

One small step:
All SEA, WEA, NEA union members will wear red shirts on Tuesdays until the current battle is won.

One slightly larger one:
Well here is the first rally in Spokane

Hope to see you there!

Spokane, WA
Friday, February 25 . 4:30pm-5:30pm. Corner of Ruby, Division and North River Drive in front of Wendy’s Restaurant

I wonder if I can fond a Bucky Badger t-shirt before Friday.

32. Get Your Citizenship ON! at Seattle Center 3/36-3/27
Edited on Tue Mar-01-11 02:25 AM by eridani
http://www.guidinglightsnetwork.com/wk_home.php

Get Your Citizenship On! Imagine yourself with hundreds of people like you—and not like you—gathered for two days of nourishment for head, heart, and soul. Train to be a 21st century citizen-leader—not in Powerpoint presentations but through powerful hands-on workshops: How to talk about race. How to lobby for the little guy. How to create a mass civic event. How to make a decision in public. How to use art to mobilize a community. And so much more.

If you want to get better at making things better—you are not alone. The 2011 Guiding Lights Weekend conference on Great Citizenship is about making things better together.

34. Presentation on Gaza at Kirkland Congregational Church 3/15
Edited on Wed Mar-02-11 07:33 PM by eridani
Kirkland Congregational Church is very pleased to welcome you to a special evening! All are cordially invited to join us in our Sanctuary at 7:00 in the evening of Tuesday, March 15th for what promises to be a very interesting and informative presenta-tion from eyewitnesses of the continuing difficulties faced by Palestinians in the troubled lands of Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Gaza and the West Bank are troubled places. Ships cannot come to Gazan ports, and supplies entering are few and far between. Walls for “security” are built through Palestinian West Bank villages, dividing neighbor from neighbor and limiting access to water. Gazans are running out of cooking oil, and electricity is frequently turned off; West Bank residents continue to have their homes confiscated or demolished.

Rev. Jason Boyd, Pastor of Kirkland Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, recently returned from a trip to the Holy Land led by Global Mission partners in the Disciples of Christ. He met with numerous groups in Israel and the West Bank, and visited troubled places “from the news” including Hebron and Ramallah.

Ms. Gerri Haynes, a longtime leader in Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (http://www.wpsr.org), recently traveled to Gaza as part of a humanitarian effort, having organ-ized a team of doctors and other medical professionals.

Mark your calendars!!
Tuesday, March 15th @ 7:00pm

35. Nonviolent communications workshop at Skagit Co-op 3/5
Hi everyone, I'll be facilitating a Nonviolent Communication workshop in Mt. Vernon on Saturday, March 5, 12:30-3:30 pm, Skagit Valley Coop meeting room 309.

The purpose of this workshop is hands-on practice of skills to effectively connect with people when speaking about political issues, such as war and peace, economic justice, etc – framing issues in a language of universal human needs, in the way we speak and in the way we hear others.

Imagine having the conflict resolution skills to defuse conflict right in the moment, whether with a boss, neighbor, spouse or even a complete stranger. What if you had the skills to clearly express what you want in a way that strengthened your relationships rather than led to disconnect or resentment? Wouldn’t life be more satisfying with the emotional vocabulary and active listening skills to hear others’ feedback, while also getting your message through to others?

Please let me know by Friday afternoon if you'd like to join this workshop - call me at 36-376-6864, or send an email to rena {at} rockisland.com.

Hope you can join us!
This workshop is free! Any donations will go the The Freedom Project, which brings NVC into WA State Prisons, http://www.freedom-project.org/.

aSUNDAY, 10:30 a.m., 6 March 2011

Farah Abrahim, Iraq Student Project speaker, "Building Hope Through Relationships"
Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 7141 California Ave SW, Seattle

Through poetry, writings from Iraqi students, and music, members of the Iraqi Student Project (ISP) will stir us into considering what is possible.

Farah Abrahim, ISP student at Dominican University in California, will join us to describe her personal experience with ISP and how ISP contributes to peace. The ISP provides opportunity for young Iraqis whose college education was disrupted by war. Students who meet the criteria are sponsored, have a host family and receive tuition waivers or full scholarships.

After completing their studies, they are determined to return to Iraq to rebuild their home land. The ISP has successfully placed forty students at colleges across the country, including Evergreen State College in Olympia.

The Seattle chapter has recently secured tuition waivers for students at Gonzaga University, in Spokane, and Great Falls College, in Montana. For more information, see FarahAndISP.

Kay and her organization ( http://unionsforsinglepayerhr676.org/) have gotten HR 676 endorsed by 581 union organizations in 49 states. Endorsers include 135 Central Labor Councils and Area Labor Federations and 39 state AFL-CIO's - including in our state, the Washington State AFL-CIO and WA State Labor Council, and many local unions. The current attack on labor is certainly a very hot topic, and we will be interested to hear Kay’s views about how this may affect labor’s support for single payer and how the single payer community may support labor.

We will also talk about the results of several meetings with state legislators over the past couple of weeks.

47. Malalai Joya able to visit WA after all
Malalai Joya, who BBC called “The bravest woman in Afghanistan”, is coming back to Washington April 4-5-6. Really! You may have heard that her visa was denied. This is true. After receipt of a letter signed by Congressmen McDermott and Inslee and Senator Murray, among others, the State Dept. issued the visa yesterday. Malalai had to miss several of her East Coast appearances, but fortunately the WA itinerary remains unchanged. Thank you to everyone for your support!

On her first visit, in Nov. 2009, Seattle and Bellingham were her two biggest US audiences, and the crowd in Tacoma wasn’t far behind. This time we have her booked for seven appearances in three days. We’re even taking her to Eastern Washington.

Malalai Joya started an illegal school for girls under the Taliban, then a medical clinic, then an orphanage. At 25 she became the youngest member of the Afghan Parliament. She attracted attention there by pointing out the war crimes of fellow parliamentarians, who then tried to kill her. She has survived numerous assassination attempts. She’ll be discussing the plight of women and the poor in her nation, and calling for an end to US military occupation and aid. Copies of her book, “A Woman among Warlords,” now in paperback, will be available. For more about her: www.malalaijoya.com

We need your attendance, and more: we’re looking for sponsors to give $100 or more to cover the costs of the tour, so we can give all money raised during the tour to Afghan Women’s Mission, US representative of Malalai Joya’s programs. Donation checks can be made out to Peace Action of WA, PO Box 30816, Seattle WA 98103.

We need volunteers as well, to help with publicity beforehand and ushering, etc. during the events. Contact me if you can help with any of these.

Here’s her WA schedule. Bold face is Seattle events. All are free:

53. Announcing a new Meetup for South King County Progressives! Federal Way 4/17
Announcing a new Meetup for South King County Progressives!

What: GASLAND: Movie Night
When: Sunday, April 17, 2011 6:00 PM

Where: Federal Way Regional Library, Meeting Room 2
34200 1st Way S.
Federal Way, WA 98003
(253) 838-3668

Why: Hydraulic fracturing (aka fracking) is poisoning our drinking water and increasing the chances of destructive earthquakes. Come watch the movie 'Gasland' and learn what you can do to stop this lethal method of natural gas extraction. The Clean Water Act is supposed to prevent toxic chemicals from getting into our water supply...but instead, we've granted exemptions to the law to the oil and gas industry. Recently, a bill has been introduced to repeal those exemptions. We have to take action now to make sure that Congress passes this important legislation.

Check it out!

Stand in solidarity with communities impacted by current policies.

WHEN: Sunday, April 17th

TIME: 1 - 4 pm

PLACE: Mixx 96 Community Space, Olympia

Corner of Washington St./State St.

Do you know you know about the Border Patrol’s enforcement strategy on the Olympic Peninsula? Or how tax dollars are being spent to militarize communities along borders south and north? What about the impact of all of this on local community members and their families, and how communities can respond? Join Bridges Not Walls for a hands-on workshop to learn strategies for monitoring and documenting I.C.E. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and Border Patrol activity. Get informed about the situation on the border, in our local community, and on the Olympic Peninsula—an area experiencing increased arrests and detentions due to an expansion of Border Patrol/I.C.E. agents and facilities in the region.

Presenters: Benjamin Prado, Coordinator of the San Diego U.S./Mexico Border Program of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and Pedro Sosa, Coordinator of the Portland Project Voice Program of the AFSC. These programs work to support the growth and development of immigrant-led organizations with the goal of bringing the voices and concerns of immigrant communities to policy debates at the local, state, and national level.

Bridges Not Walls is a coalition of community members from the South Sound region of Washington State who have come together to address issues of immigration in our community. We believe that immigrants, regardless of legal status, deserve to be treated with dignity. We work in solidarity with immigrant communities in our area to raise awareness about the impact of our broken immigration system on real people; and to promote human rights, economic rights, and civil rights for all people.

Get Informed. Get involved!

68. Two meetings in Bellingham on Lake Whatcom water quality 5/9 & 5/10
Lake Whatcom Water Quality
Protection is Threatened
Another reason our County Council matters to the citizens of Bellingham

"In October 2008, the Whatcom County Council narrowly approved a deal setting in motion the potential transfer of more than 8,000 acres in the Lake Whatcom watershed from state to county control..."

"Now, the County Council may not have the four votes necessary to do the transfer, with some council members skeptical the county should assume the costs now."

In 1998 the Washington Department of Ecology listed Lake Whatcom as an impaired body of water under the section of 303 (d) of the Clean Water Act for unacceptable levels of phosphorus, mercury and low levels of dissolved oxygen. The degradation of Lake Whatcom will in the long run necessitate a costly clean up of the lake to all taxpayers of the County. This is our drinking water for the City of Bellingham and residents outside the city limits.

Two facts are evident, the source of pollution is mankind’s footprint in the watershed. Second, the lowest cost to meet the twin goals of preventing pollution of the lake and providing clean drinking water is to limit that footprint.

Whatcom County Council has a historical opportunity, long in the works, to affect a reconveyance of a large portion of the land around Lake Whatcom into a conservancy protecting the lake for generations in perpetuity.

This is not a park as some council members have called it, this is our future, our children’s future and legacy for all. It is a clean environment, it is safe drinking water and it is unconscionable to oppose.

PLEASE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR PROTECTING OUR DRINKING WATER SOURCE

Monday, May 9, 6-9 pm – DNR Hearing on Lake Whatcom
County Courthouse, 311 Grand Ave, Bellingham

69. Seattle Streets for All to hold public hearings on spending $7 million in transportation dollars
If you were given nearly $7 million dollars for transportation improvements in Seattle, how would you spend it? Would you fix all the potholes? Improve transit?

It’s no secret that there are more transportation needs than there is funding. Now is your chance to communicate your priorities!

Last year, Streets For All Seattle cleared the way for the creation of the Transportation Benefit District and a $20 vehicle license fee that will fund alternative transportation projects and programs in Seattle.

The Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee III (CTAC) was formed for the purposes of deciding how to spend that revenue and examining the potential for a future ballot measure to fund additional projects.

This month, CTAC III is holding three public workshops, a perfect chance for you to tell the City how to spend our transportation dollars:

Date / time: Monday, May 23 / 5:30 – 7:30pm
Location: Southwest Library, Meeting Room (9010 35th Ave SW)
Councilmember Tom Rasmussen in attendance

Date / time: Tuesday, May 24 / 5:30 – 7:30pm
Location: Fremont Library, Meeting Room (731 N 35th St)
Mayor Mike McGinn in attendance

Date / time: Thursday, May 26 / 5:30 – 7:30pm
Location: Washington Middle School, Cafeteria (2101 S Jackson St)
Mayor Mike McGinn in attendance

If you can’t make any of these meetings, CTAC III still wants to hear from you! Submit your comments or take the online survey here. http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/ctac.htm

Thanks for all of your good work.

Sincerely,

Craig M. Benjamin and David Hiller

Robert has formed the NWroots Fellowship to organize the event in cooperation with NPI.

NWroots 2011 will be happening on July 9th, 2011, in Pioneer Square. Registration is now open, and is only $50 for activists and $25 for students. Both rates include breakfast and lunch.

(Note that you can also RSVP on Facebook.)

Most sessions will take place at Comedy Underground, which many NPI readers are undoubtedly familiar with. The event’s keynote speaker will be Ujjal Dosanjh, former Premier of British Columbia and former Canadian Health Minister, who will talk about the importance of universal healthcare.

http://www.thenation.com/video/160604/video-tracking-armys-secret-detainee-abuse-task-force

3. Review and discussion of other recent developments in Iraq.

4. There will be a peaceful rally in solidarity with the people of Iraq as they continue their protests against Nuri Al-Maliki’s government and their continued oppression and tyrannical acts against the citizens of Iraq.

The rally will take place on June 12th, 2011 from 4:00PM-6:00PM, at the Fountain area outside of Macy’s, on Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue Square.

June 7th, 2011 marks the end of the 1...00 days during which Al-Maliki had promised the Iraqi people he would make drastic changes in the government and improvements in the country. As we reach this date, not much has changed, and what had started as protests to demand better services and rights has now changed into demands to end the reign of Al-Maliki’s oppressive regime.

Iraqis have been holding and will continue to hold protests and sit-ins in many major cities around Iraq. The youth of Iraq have spoken, and they will not be silenced or scared by Al-Maliki and his goons.

Here are the basic demands of the Iraqi people:
1. End the reign of the Maliki regime
2. Complete withdrawal of all US troops and bases out of Iraq
3. Release the thousands of innocent prisoners

Here are some basic statistics of what has been happening in Iraq over the past 8 years:
• One million killed. <---- this is now closer to 2 million
• Six million displaced.
• Five million orphans. <-- this is now closer to 6 million
• One million widows.
• 1.5 million Disabled.
• 80% without proper sanitation.
• 70% without adequate access to clean water.
• Two million Iraqis suffered arbitrary arrests by the US or by government forces.
• 400 secret detention centers.
• Half a million (mainly women and children) living on rubbish dumps.
• 350 sites highly contaminated with Uranium due to the 20 years use of depleted Uranium weapons by US army. As a result, in areas such as Fallujah, Basrah and Nasriya, about 3 in 5 children are born with deformities.
• Oil returns: over $1.5 Trillion (USD), yet Iraqis have no electricity, food, clean water, or basic services. Iraq is now the 2nd most corrupt nation in the world, with its government officials pocketing the country’s resources!

The people of Iraq are tired of the Maliki government’s tactics to create sectarian and ethnic wars between Iraqis. Furthermore, the senseless bloodletting of Iraqis via terror supported acts of the Maliki government has to stop. Iraqis deserve the right to a dignified life! As human beings, we are asking the Obama administration to support the people of Iraq by condemning the acts of the Maliki dictatorship, as well as respecting the sovereignty of Iraq by pulling American troops completely out of Iraq.

81. ART EXHIBIT: Remember Me: Voices of the Silenced in Colombia; Seattle 6/23

Thursday June 23rd @ 6pm Opening Night Reception
ART EXHIBIT: Remember Me: Voices of the Silenced in Colombia

On display at El Centro de La Raza June 23rd- July 11th, 2524 16th Avenue South Seattle, WA 98144. Opening Night Reception Thursday, June 23rd @ 6pm features Colombian food, music, and art! Guest speakers to address current U.S. foreign policy issues in Colombia! Remember Me is an exhibit of original art that brings to life Colombia's decades long conflict. Despite the conflict's creation of the worst humanitarian crisis in the western hemisphere, few in the U.S. know much about it.

In the last 20 years alone 70,000 people have died—mostly innocent civilians. More than four million have fled the violence, making Colombia home to the largest internally displaced population in the world.

In recent years, Colombian soldiers have murdered nearly 1,000 innocent people and thousands of others continue to endure violation of their human rights at the hands of numerous armed actors.

By and large these stories go untold. Truth is silenced with fear and deadly oppression.

Remember Me not only allows us to see, hear, and experience these stories but calls on us to transform the role US foreign policy has played in the exacerbation of this crisis. Join us as we honor the power of art to promote peace, justice and human rights! 83. "Inside Job" to be shown at South King County progressive event; Kent 6/26
Announcing a new Meetup for South King County Progressives!

What: Watch 'Inside Job' and learn about forming a State Bank for WA
When: Sunday, June 26, 2011 1:30 PM

Where: Kent Library
212 2nd Avenue N
Kent, WA 98032

Guest speakers John Repp and Cindy Cole have been studying the economy with a small group of concerned citizens since the economic crash of 2008. The group is a committee of the Seattle Fellowship of Reconciliation looking for ways out of this crisis and the looming problem of global climate change. They came upon the idea of a state bank in their study and approached Representative Hasegawa who was also interested in the idea. Bills have been proposed for the last two legislative sessions but have not passed. However, momentum and support continues to build for a publicly owned state bank that will keep our tax money local and working in Washington State.

After the State Bank presentation stay and watch the movie 'Inside Job', the Oscar winning documentary that takes a close look at what caused the financial meltdown. 'Inside Job' provides a comprehensive analysis of the global financial crisis of 2008, which at a cost over $20 trillion, caused millions of people to lose their jobs and homes in the worst recession since the Great Depression, and nearly resulted in a global financial collapse. Through exhaustive research and extensive interviews with key financial insiders, politicians, journalists, and academics, the film traces the rise of a rogue industry which has corrupted politics, regulation, and academia. It was made on location in the United States, Iceland, England, France, Singapore, and China.

We will have time for an open discussion after the movie.

86. ART EXHIBIT: Remember Me: Voices of the Silenced in Colombia: 6/23 Seattle

??In the last 20 years alone 70,000 people have died—mostly innocent civilians. More than four million have fled the violence, making Colombia home to the largest internally displaced population in the world.?? In recent years, Colombian soldiers have murdered nearly 1,000 innocent people and thousands of others continue to endure violation of their human rights at the hands of numerous armed actors. ??By and large these stories go untold. Truth is silenced with fear and deadly oppression.

Remember Me not only allows us to see, hear, and experience these stories but calls on us to transform the role US foreign policy has played in the exacerbation of this crisis. Join us as we honor the power of art to promote peace, justice and human rights! Public welcome

BePeace® is a practice that combines a scientifically proven method for "feeling peace" with a clear path for "speaking peace" that creates an authentic, compassionate connection. As we learn this practice, we are empowered to pass it on, to "teach peace".

Benefit s of BePeace®:

1. Stop stress in just 60 seconds

2. Resolve conflicts

3. Find release from worry, anger, anxiety and depression simply and quickly

4. Achieve your highest brain function and open up your intuition

5. Maintain emotional balance, even in times of great turmoil and stress

This program has been taught widely in schools in Costa Rica since 2004 and is now moving into the United States. Rasur Foundation International aims to train teachers and counselors in BePeace® so these individuals can pass on the practice to students and parents in their school community. Offering the BePeace® program in schools equips students, teachers and parents with the skills to resolve conflicts in a mutually satisfying manner and provides life skills for making positive choices that enrich life. (Teacher hrs. & credits available through Antioch University.)

We believe that to become more peaceful nations we must begin within ourselves and that teaching our children is the logical first step to shifting generational violence into lasting peace.

A vivid and compelling portrait of an icon of the 60s whose life was cut tragically short.

FILM: BANANAS!* (87 min, Fredrik Gertten, 2011)
THE FILM DOLE FOOD CO. DOESN'T WANT YOU TO SEE!

With Representatives from WITNESS FOR PEACE, and others.

BANANAS!* is a suspenseful, layer-peeling, court room drama chronicle contextualized within the global politics of food and First vs. Third world dynamics. It focuses on a slippery fact trail and a landmark and highly controversial legal case pitting a dozen Nicaraguan plantation workers against Dole Food Corporation and its alleged usage of a deadly banned pesticide and its probable link to generations of sterilized workers. Theirs is a bellwether case: The first of thousands of cases awaiting trial in Nicaragua and the first legal case where foreign farm workers were allowed to testify against an American multinational corporation before a full jury on U.S. soil. At stake are the futures of generations of workers, their families as well as the culture of global, multinational business.

90. Fellowship of Resistance regional conference in Seabeck 7/1-7/4
Friday, July 1 to Monday, July 4, 2011 - Mark your calendars

WWFOR’s 53rd ANNUAL NORTHWEST REGIONAL CONFERENCE - "TOWARD A FAIR, SUSTAINABLE GLOBAL ECONOMY," WITH KEYNOTE BY SARAH VAN GELDER

Seabeck, WA

"Toward a Fair, Sustainable Global Economy" with keynote by Sarah van Gelder, co-founder and executive editor of YES! Magazine. Fair is a concept that even toddlers understand when they are asked to share and to take turns. With increasing sophistication, most of us progress from the idea of sharing equally to the idea of distributing resources as earned or as needed, at least within our closest circles. In the wider world, resources are distributed according to place of birth, race, class, gender, and other criteria unrelated to need, effort, or equality.

We note, with alarm, increasing levels of CO2, decreasing reserves of fossil fuels, degradation of forests and wetlands, and more frequent meteorological disasters. How long will humans be able to inhabit our planet?

We have a vision in which every child is nurtured by loving family and community, where all have access to safe and nourishing food, decent shelter, respectful education, meaningful work, healthcare, and joyful cultural expressions.

Corporate greed and the institutions that support it - weapons and militarism, dictatorships, media misinformation, corrupt electoral systems, widespread prisons, private militias, racism and other forms of oppression, and more - stand in the way of our vision. What is being done on a local level all around the world, and on an international level through communication and cooperation, toward a fair, sustainable global economy?

Come join us as we analyze problems, discuss solutions, and celebrate our fellowship in the human family.

92. Attention supporters of Paid Sick Days in Seattle! 7/13 street theater

Once a week for the next month we'll be highlighting the best and worst of the city -- those businesses that support the ordinance and provide paid sick days to their employees (fame!), and those that oppose paid sick days (shame!) And we're starting out the shame campaign with the big boys: Starbucks.

At 12:30pm this Wednesday, July 13th, we'll be gathering at the Starbucks on 4th and Cherry to protest Howard Schultz's decision to take paid sick days away from employees. We're doing it street-theater style, with signs, chants, and messages for the customers -- hope there's no virus in your venti! And don't worry, we'll have face masks for everyone to wear so we don't catch anything while we're there. Seriously.

To really make this event resonate, we need just the right worker voice to communicate the paid sick days message -- and who better than a Starbucks employee? We're looking for baristas to join us next week -- do you know someone who works or has worked for Starbucks and can participate on Wednesday? If so, please let me know!

Remember -- Starbucks on 4th and Cherry, 12:30pm on Wednesday July 13th. Tell me you'll be there!

93. Bicycle Alliance annual dinner and auction in Seattle 10/22
19th Annual Bicycle Alliance of Washington Auction
Saturday, October 22, 2011
Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion

Doors open and silent auctions begin at 5:30 PM
Dinner served at 7:00 PM
Auctioneer: Eric Mamroth

Whether you ride with your kids to the park, pedal to work, cycle to school, or tour the hood with your pals--all bicycling is local. The Bicycle Alliance of Washington works every day from your city hall to the Capitol in Olympia to the halls of Congress in Washington, DC--shifting gears of government policies and changing the minds of legislators.

We need your support to shift the transportation balance, shift the political climate, and shift attitudes in favor of bicycling. Please help us shift gears for bicycling in Washington State by making a donation to our annual auction.

We look for a range of items that will generate spirited bidding and represent the whole wide world of bicycle riding. Our attendees are active folks who appreciate adventures, getaways, and unique experiences. A private weeklong sailboat charter, a customized and catered weekend bike tour, a stay at a Maui condo, and a gourmet Mediterranean dinner for six have been highly prized offerings in the past.

Other popular donations include theatre and sporting event tickets, gift baskets, ski passes, handcrafted jewelry, private winery tours, massage/spa packages, and recreation opportunities. Restaurant and retails gift cards are also always welcome.

Please use our online donation form to submit your auction donation, and contact Louise McGrody louisemc {at} bicyclealliance.org if you have any questions. To ensure that your donation makes the printed and online catalogue, we need to receive the information by September 15. Check our auction page for more information about the event and save the date, October 22, and join us!

Thanks for helping us shift the gears of government, and shift the thinking about the importance of people on bikes.

95. Interested in abolishing corporate personhood? Meeting in Des Moines 7/28
Colleagues,

Location change --
This meeting will be held instead at the Woodmont Library - just 4 miles north of the Federal Way 320th previously announced.

Woodmont Library: 26809 Pacific Highway South, Des Moines, WA 98198-9255.
Library phone: 253-839-0121
Take the 272nd street exit off I-5, west to Pacific Highway (Rt 99), then north a block to the Woodmont Library.

Please make sure any to whom you forwarded this earlier notice, receive notice of the NEW location.

My apologies for the change. The King County Library advised that the Federal Way meeting room orginally requested is not available - and so moved us to the nearest available library, Woodmont Library, not far but actually in Des Moines.

Below is the original meeting call, edited with new location.
===============

Colleagues,

Please consider attending a meeting on Thursday, July 28th, 7 PM, at Woodmont Library, 26809 Pacific Highway South, Des Moines, WA 98198.

The purpose is to discuss the objective of a state legislative resolution calling on the Congress for a constitutional amendment to curtail corporate personhood and undue influence in campaigns, elections and lawmaking by Big Money and corporate interests -- as proposed by Move To Amend, Free Speech For People and like-minded organizations. If there is consensus on such an objective, we may decide to create an ongoing coordinating team to map out an advocacy plan. No decisions are final at this point.

The meeting room is available from 6:15 PM - for any who want to come early (with munchies, beverages) for casual conversation. We plan the formal meeting to begin at 7 PM - and to end by 8:30 pm or shortly after. By 9 pm, we need to be packed up and gone.

This meeting has been discusseed with Holly Jacobson (Free Speech For People), Move-To-Amend local groups (including Molly Gibbs/Aleta Debee in Olympia), Bill Moyer (Backbone Campaign), and with support of Steve Breaux (WashPIRG), Sandra VanderVen (MoveOn.org), and others. WPC can play a role in this effort if there is interest and participation from partner organizations.

Please reply whether you - or others from your group - plan to attend. Feel free to invite others who may be interested. Reply to: wpc {at} washclean.org Phone 206-784-2522 (WPC ofc) or 206-784-9695 (home ofc).

Through over 300 local unions, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor represents over 800,000 workers in every key industry in the L.A. metro area.

Before leading the Federation, Maria Elena was elected as President and built the hotel workers union UNITE-HERE Local 11 into one of the most active unions in Southern California. Her hard work led her to be elected the first Latina on the Executive Board of UNITE HERE Int’l. Union, (and on the AFL-CIO Executive Board) where she became Executive Vice President. About RVCC and SEEDArts

SEEDArts' pioneering vision led to the creation of SE Seattle 's two leading arts/cultural facilities: the Rainier Valley Cultural Center (RVCC), our region's first performing arts center; and the Columbia City Gallery (CCG), a collective featuring the work of 30 local visual artists. SEEDArts also established the only major non-municipally funded public art program in Seattle . Our arts/cultural programs are as follows: 1) performing arts and multicultural programs at RVCC, as well as cultural/arts education classes and camps for children and youth, some held off-site in conjunction with local schools and housing facilities; 2) visual arts exhibitions and related programs at CCG and 3) our Public Art Program, which has directed over $750,000 of resources (resulting in the creation of over 40 artworks) into streets, parks and open spaces of SE Seattle.

Serious concerns have been raised regarding air quality impacts on residents downwind of these facilities. The purpose of this conference is to improve understanding of the potential public health impacts and the regulatory framework that governs forest biomass fueled heat and power plants, and evaluate current and possible responses.

102. Rally for Clean Air and Good Jobs; Seattle 9/15
Last week, I emailed you about how the Port of Seattle is polluting South Seattle, contributing to sky-high hospitalization rates for children with asthma. With common sensesafeguards —such as requiring cleaner trucks at the Port – there would be fewer kids visiting the hospital for asthma attacks.

Next week, the Seattle Westin is hosting a convention for Port Authority leaders from around the nation. We will be joining a coalition of environmental, labor, faith, and social justice groups asking for reform at the Port of Seattle. Instead of a Port of Poverty and Pollution, we want a port that provides clean air and good jobs.

The Environmental Protection Agency has a role in protecting these kids too -- but last week President Obama delayed it from implementing ozone standards that would've reduced asthma in our communities. So now it's up to us -- we need to let both Seattle and President Obama know that protecting our kids' health is vital!

Join us at the Seattle Westin for a lunchtime rally on September 14th to say that we want a clean port.

Event Details

WHAT: Rally for Clean Air and Good Jobs -- with fun props like a giant inflatable inhaler!

WHO: Advocates for environmental and social justice like Sierra Club, Teamsters, Service Employees, Church Council of Greater Seattle, Puget Sound Sage -- and you!

WHEN: Thursday, September 15th at 11:30 AM

WHERE: Seattle Westin Hotel, 5th Ave and Stewart St., Seattle (Click here for directions!)

Questions: Contact Seth Ballhorn at seth.ballhorn {at} sierraclub.org.

Peace One Day

http://www.peaceoneday.org/en/welcome

Jeremy Gilley writes

In September 1999 I founded the film project Peace One Day to document my efforts to create an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date. In 2001, Peace One Day achieved its primary objective. United Nations General Assembly resolution (A/Res/55/282) was unanimously adopted by UN member states, formally establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace, fixed in the global calendar on 21st September.
With the day in place, Peace One Day’s aim now is to institutionalize Peace Day across the world so it becomes self-sustaining. As a key driver towards the institutionalization of Peace Day, Peace One Day is calling for and working towards a day of ceasefire and non-violence on Peace Day 21 September 2012 - a Global Truce. We hope this will be the largest reduction in global violence in recorded history, both in terms of domestic violence and armed conflict.

From Peace One Day’s Life-Saving Activity Archive

Since 2007, Peace Day agreements by all parties to conflict in Afghanistan have resulted in the immunization against polio of 4.5 million children in areas hitherto unreachable or hard to reach due to conflict. This polio drive has been a joint effort by the Afghan health authorities, World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and it was also supported by actors including the International Committee of the Red Cross as well as health NGOs.

On Peace Day 2008 in Afghanistan the United Nations Department for Safety and Security, which monitors security related incidents, recorded a 70 per cent reduction in violent incidents on the day itself.

On Peace Day 2010, over 50,000 children and women of child-bearing age, across 23 high-risk locations of greater Kabul, were vaccinated against deadly diseases. The UN agencies worked with the government’s health department to immunize women and children against deadly diseases like polio, meningitis, diphtheria and tetanus. The locations visited have very low immunization coverage, including illegal and informal settlements, urban slums, and areas without health facilities. In addition, a nationwide polio immunization campaign to target 8 million children was launched.

131. SAve Troy Davis rally in Seattle 9/16
In yesterday's summary of the events for the week, I mentioned that Friday is to be a national event to demand that the state of Georgia review seriously the case of Troy Davis and asked if anyone wants to do a local event.

The following is the announcement of that Seattle event. Some of our MoveOn members have expressed an interest in an action/issue group organized around justice issues. Anyone interested in leading that?

Save Troy Davis

When: September 16th, 5pm

Where: Westlake Center

What: Rally/ Speakout/ Petition signing and gathering

On September 16, we are holding an International Day of Solidarity for Troy Davis. Troy is scheduled to be executed on Sept 21st despite the fact that the case against him has unraveled and much of the new circumstances point toward his innocence. In Seattle we will be having a rally at Westlake Center at 5pm. There will be a speak out and we will have petitions to sign to send to the Georgia Board of Pardons & Paroles.

In brief Troy Davis was sentenced to death in 1989 for the slaying of Georgia police officer Mark Allen MacPhail. Despite the lack of physical evidence linking Davis to the case he has served 20 years in prison. The media sensationalized the story of a white father being shot in the line of duty by an African American man which may have been an expedient in putting him behind bars. Not only this but 7 of the 9 witnesses recanted their testimonies and sworn affidavits claiming that the felt pressure from the police to mark Davis as the assailant. Davis has faced three execution dates and is now facing a fourth on the 21st of September.

The courts have failed to acknowledge the lack of evidence and recanted testimonies, denying Davis' appeals. It is up to us to be the power that challenges this system of racial prejudice and oppression. We need to organize, create petition drives, reach out to our communities, pull people into the streets and support Troy Davis!

Come out to Westlake Center this Friday, 9/16 at 5pm and make your voice heard. Save Troy Davis and abolish the racist death penalty!

132. Rally for port reform 9/15 in Seattle
genevieve {at} pugetsoundsage.org

The Port of Seattle is hosting port officials from across the country at the American Association of Port Authorities conference at the Westin Downtown Seattle. Join with environmental, faith, community and labor groups at 11:30 am on Thursday, September 15 at the Westin Downtown as we stand up for workers and say no to pollution caused by the port.

Workers at the airport and seaport struggle to provide for their families with the jobs generated by the Port of Seattle. At the airport many workers have to rely on public assistance as they try to make ends meet. At the seaport port truck drivers can work 11 or 12 hour days up to 6 days a week andd only earn $28,500. These drivers don’t receive health benefits or sick days and have to purchase their own trucks. Good jobs should provide a living wage, health benefits and sick days. You can support workers as they organize and demand better conditions. Say no to the Port of Poverty.

Residents of South Seattle and South King County suffer the consequences of the Port of Seattle’s pollution. Residents surrounding the airport suffer from the noise pollution create by runways. The seaport generates air pollution from port trucks and ships on a daily basis making residents more susceptible to asthma and other respiratory diseases. Communities should not bear the burden of industry’s cost. Say no to the Port of Pollution.

Stand with us at 11:30 am on Thursday, September 15 at the Westin Downtown to Say no to the Port of Poverty and Pollution. If you can’t make it that day but still want to help contact Genevieve Aguilar. genevieve {at} pugetsoundsage.org

134. Vigil at Norm Dicks office in Tacoma 9/21
http://www.pdamerica.org/events/view/wa06-brown-bag-lunch-vigil-rep-norm-dicks

Please join me at our Brown Bag Lunch Vigil, Wednesday, September 21 in from of Rep. Norm Dicks's Tacoma office. Go here to register and to see map and directions.

We’ll ask Norm to sign the pledge for the Main Street Contract to Heal America/Tax Wall Street! The Nurses are on the front lines of the struggle: See the Main Street Contract.

What's behind the attacks on working people?

The modest pensions and health benefits we have earned, the pay that supports our families, the improved conditions for our patients did not deplete public treasuries or jeopardize the survival of our employers. The banks and other financial giants did-and were rewarded with bailouts and bonuses while our communities pay the price. Over the past 30 years, while wages have fallen or stagnated and insurance premiums and other basic costs skyrocketed, wealth has been shifted from working families to Wall Street. It's not shared sacrifice when only working people make concessions.

•Corporate taxes are at historical lows. Yet $1.6 trillion, corporate profits for the third quarter of 2010 were the highest on record.
•Hospitals nationally recorded $34 billion in profits in 2009, the second highest ever.
•42 percent of U.S. companies paid no U.S. income taxes for two or more years from 1998 to 2005.

Tell the Super Committee NO cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid (Sen. Patty Murray's office is just across the street!).

One other quick item: Have you signed this petition yet? We need 2,000 signatures by Monday!
http://www.pdamerica.org/forms/sign/save-one-trillion-dollars-in-ten

I hope to see you on the street this Wednesday.
In solidarity,

Roberta McNair

135. Hearings on PCO elections in Olympia 9/23--NO ONLINE VOTING!!!
Edited on Wed Sep-21-11 04:58 AM by eridani
Hearing on PCO elections Sept. 23rd, 10 a.m. Attend if you can to show the County Auditors that PCO is an important elected position, a responsibility that they cannot shirk.

Also, let them know that the WA Dems SCC is opposed to electronic voting for PCO. Online elections would be too expensive for the small number of contested positions. They would not increase participation. I endorse Rick Dewitt's double postcard proposal, and hope that he will explain it here.

142. Move to Amend convention in Olympia 11-11 through 11-13
with guest trainer Riki Ott, founder of Civics Unlimited. We will review:

· how democracy is supposed to work· the history of corporate take-over· and define how you can organize to restore human rights over corporate profits.

The session will take place at the Governor Hotel in Olympia from November 11th through November 13th at 12:30 pm. Ott will be joined by trainer and facilitator, Molly Gibbs, and student activist Corrie Radka, with the UC campuses.

The recent U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending on elections. Dr. Riki Ott will help local activists understand the history behind 125 years of corporate abuses. Her work as a fisher ma’am in Cordova, Alaska called on her skills as a marine toxicologist, specializing in oil pollution, to spend 21 years following the Exxon-Valdez spill, fighting Exxon and state legislators.

Dr. Ott has co-founded three nonprofit organizations to deal with lingering social, economic, environmental, and judicial fallout from the spill disaster. She draws on her training and experience to educate, empower, and motivate students (4th grade through university and law) and the general public. Ott testified before Congress and the Alaska State Legislature, and received state and national recognition for her work. Her latest book is Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (Chelsea Green, 2008).

“Corporate Personhood” refers to court-created precedent that gives corporations constitutional rights intended solely for human beings. Riki explains, vis-a-vis what happened to the reduction in the damages owed to citizens of Cordova, how the courts overturned these compensatory and direct damages. Ultimately, the real losses are not addressed, and Exxon continues making $40 billion in net profits. She summarizes, “corporation and state must be separated by a 28th Amendment.”

The local forum will take place on November 11th, at 5:30. The forum will focus on how Puget Sound can join the national movement against Corporate Personhood, and strategically plan actions that support local needs.

A sliding scale fee encourages all who want to attend to register. Housing is available at a discount rate at the hotel, and some housing is available at local homes. For more information call 360-412-1519, or visit Move to Amend, Olympia

146. Labor meeting on economic crisis in Seattle 11/14
As the economic crisis in this country - and globally - continues, we're seeing more and more resistance to the growing inequalities. The Occupy movement has clearly struck a chord. It's been reflected in everything from street actions to widespread shifting of funds from predatory banks into credit unions; from labor-based struggles demanding an equitable tax system and end to attacks on public workers, to campus actions to maintain public education; to community fights for housing, health care and jobs.

It's an exciting opportunity for labor, community, student and faith communities to join together for a genuine people's movement.

Labor, community, small business, faith and student communities in the Puget Sound will hold a forum:

149. Car sharing forum in Seattle 11/18
Do you love car sharing, telling everyone about your zipcar membership and how much money you save from it? Would you like to see more opportunities for car sharing in Washington State? Are you interested to learn how you can make money from renting out the car you barely use? Come to our Friday Forum to learn how TCC is working to expand car sharing through legislation in Olympia this year.

Details
This Friday, November 18th
Noon-1:30
King County Chinook Building
Rm 115
401 Fifth Ave., Seattle, WA 98104
RSVP TODAY! http://transportationchoices.org/events/friday-forum-on-connecting-washington

Background
Car owners invest large amounts of time and money into an asset that is rarely used. Cars are driven only 8% of the time, while potential drivers walk past block after block of underutilized cars. Peer to peer car sharing enables car owners to safely rent out their underutilized cars to a community of trusted drivers. People in need of a car can rent one by the hour using technology to connect them to available cars.

Car sharing empowers people to travel more efficiently and cause a shift from personal to shared transport. It can trim emissions, traffic accidents, fuel costs, need for costly parking, while it generates income for car owners, and stimulates the local economy.

We have a great line-up of speakers to talk to us about car sharing and how we can expand it in Washington.

Panelists

Victor Colman, Executive Director for the Childhood Obesity Coalition
Supports personal car sharing efforts as a public health leader, because it is an incentive for people to minimize their vehicle use and rely on other travel options as much as possible. Car sharing typically reduces average vehicle use by 40-60% among drivers who rely on it, making it an important transportation demand management strategy.

John Atcheson, President of Getaround
Supports personal car sharing as an entrepreneur and advisor in the field of Sustainable Technology. He supports personal car sharing because of the business opportunities it will bring to Washington State. Getaround is a car sharing company that operates in the San Francisco Bay area.

Alan Durning, Executive Director of Sightline
Supports personal cars haring as an author who has written or contributed to nine Sightline books, including most recently, Sightline's Cascadia Scorecard 2007. He supports personal car sharing because it is an enormous business opportunity and can bring gigantic environmental and social dividends.
