3. A report on 5th LD from Horses Ass

Maple Valley Town Hall

Yesterday, legislators around the state held town hall meetings. I’ve lived in the 5th Legislative District for a year now – and expect to live here for many more – and thought it was a good time to actually hear what my state representatives are up to. I showed up at 10am at the Maple Valley Community Center. Glenn Anderson and Jay Rodne (my two Republican state reps) were just starting to speak to a crowd of about a dozen people. $1.9 trillion: Corporate America’s cash

4. 11th LD went well
Zach Hudgins will have a phone town hall on 3/24, and Margarita is 80 years old and it's all she can do to keep up with her leadership responsibilities. Bob Hasegawa had a slide show on the budget. The state bank is dead for this year--Bob asked us to keep up with educating our various communites on its benefits.

I learned something critical. In raising revenue, it is better to go with fees--defined as charges for specific services--rather than taxes--defined as monies raised to be applied anywhere. In the former case, you need 50% + 1. In the latter case, you need a 2/3 majority in both cases.

5. Rep Hasegawa also spoke at the King County LAC meeting
http://waliberals.org/notes-on-the-lac-meeting-with-rep-hasegawa/2011/03/21/

Sunday afternoon I attended the King County Dems’ Legislative Action Committee meeting in Renton, where Rep. Bob Hasegawa was the guest speaker. He is awesome: a strong progressive and an unpretentious, nice guy. The meeting was riveting, for political junkies like me anyway, and well attended. I guess the attendees all felt like fellow comrades in arms.

The battle is to deal with the fallout from Tim Eyman’s anti-tax initiatives that passed last year and to figure out how to stop the voters from supporting such destructive initiatives that are against their own self-interest.

Hasegawa lamented the lack of leadership by Democrats in Olympia, especially with regard to raising revenue. Missing In Action and Gone South were words that came up with respect to some issues at least. Hasegawa also expressed dissatisfaction with President Obama’s leadership on some issues. (Who isn’t dissatisfied?)
