Think tank says (Seattle) region's biotech sector poised to grow

The Seattle biotechnology sector may not be as strong as those in Boston, San Diego or San Jose.

But researchers at the Milken Institute -- an economic think tank that yesterday issued a 107-page study on biotechnology clusters -- believe Seattle's life-science corridor is well-rounded and poised for growth.

In a comprehensive report that analyzed everything from patent citations to Ph.D.s, the Puget Sound region ranked fifth of 12 regions studied. The Seattle area did not receive a No. 1 ranking in any of the 44 sub-categories, but it did not rank last in any measurement, either. The region performed best in the research and development category (third) and worst in human capital (eighth).

San Diego -- home to the Salk Institute, the University of California-San Diego and 14,542 biotechnology employees -- ranked first in the study. Austin, Texas, ranked last.

Seattle's solid showing surprised Perry Wong, one of the five authors of the report.

Mike Milken's Biography

It was in 1972, three years after Michael Milken began a legendary career on Wall Street, that his wife told him her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. That was when Milken began what has been a 32-year search for medical solutions. Along the way, he has become one of America's most active philanthropists. He formalized his philanthropy in 1982 by co-founding the Milken Family Foundation (www.mff.org), which was to be endowed with several hundred million dollars. Now in its 23rd year, the Foundation has worked closely with more than 1,000 organizations around the world. Over the past two decades, it has supported extensive programs in such areas as youth programs, inner-cities solutions, assistance to families of children with cancer, and research on pediatric neurology, nutrition, brain and breast cancers, and leukemia. The MFF's most acclaimed program, the Milken National Educator Awards, was established in 1985 and is now the largest teacher-recognition program in the U.S. operating in partnership with the departments of education in 47 states and the District of Columbia. Dubbed the "Oscars of Teaching" by Teacher Magazine, it has awarded approximately $50 million to honor nearly 2,000 K-12 teachers and principals. Each educator receives an unrestricted $25,000 prize and participates in an annual professional development conference. One hundred new Milken Educators were honored this spring.
