Psycho killer raccoons terrorize Olympia (AP real headline)

Psycho killer raccoons terrorize Olympia

OLYMPIA, Washington (AP) -- A fierce group of raccoons has killed 10 cats, attacked a small dog and bitten at least one pet owner who had to get rabies shots, residents of Olympia say.

Some have taken to carrying pepper spray to ward off the masked marauders and the woman who was bitten now carries an iron pipe when she goes outside at night.

"It's a new breed," said Tamara Keeton, who with Kari Hall started a raccoon watch after an emotional neighborhood meeting drew 40 people. "They're urban raccoons, and they're not afraid."

Tony Benjamins, whose family lost two cats, said he got a big dog - a German Shepherd-Rottweiler mix - to keep the raccoons away.

One goal of the patrol is to get residents to stop feeding raccoons and to keep pets and pet food indoors.>>>>snip

1. We have coyotes in our neighborhood (Seattle)
Same deal. They are not afraid of people and they are killing cats. There are lost cat signs up everywhere. It's horrible. And, we found out over the weekend, some people nearby are putting out dishes of food to feed feral cats - which actually is providing a two-course meal for the coyotes - cat food, and kittens. It's like the asshats at Greenlake who feed the ducks - but really, they are just feeding the rats.

2. Baseball bats and shovels and still a problem?
They should practice their swings.

"Keeton said the raccoons travel their route so often they've worn a path.

"It's like a freeway in the back yard," she said. "It's like clockwork. They come between 9 and 9:30 every night.""

I think every night about 9 -9:30 there should be batting practice.

4. Iv'e dealt with raccoons most of my life
Camping out in the Flordia Keys, I left a window cracked in my car, they ate off the rubber seal and had a party in my car where I left my food cooler.

The headline in the feed I got from AP was just too much to resist.
Sounds like a problem in your area, they are smart, travel in packs but these sound like they are doing crack.

15. Ha Ha!
Oh that reminds me of when I left a 40 lbs bag of dog food in a minivan in the driveway with one of the windows half open. Boy, that was a major party! The van was such a total mess. Their foot prints were everywhere outside and in. Poop, pee, mud, and dog food everywhere!

The coon got on his back feet, made a fist, and decked my cat, who was a big, er, Maine Coon cat. Broke his nose, knocked him cold. Them is tough, strong critters.

7. Why would raccoons that kill cats be considered psycho?
If they did the Dance of the Cygnets in matching tutus in the backyard, that would be psycho.

22. Why do raccoons hate America?
Raccoons "terrorize"? I suppose Al Qaeda has trained them. :eyes:

But, yes, raccoons do terrorize pets and cause havoc. They are little urban bandits. But, everybody's got to make a living somehow, even if it means stealing dog food.

23. Some of you may remember that my dog killed
one of those raccoons.

I spoke with the nighbors the next day and they cleared out their squirrel food. Luckily, she's only killed 2 more since then.

:)
