So, they had Diebold machines at my polling place (Seattle)
They offered me a choice of the paper or the touch screen machine. I told the poll worker I didn't trust the voting machines (I said it loudly) and she said, "neither do I". Almost all of the people there were using the paper ballots (they are optical scan). But here's the thing! The Diebold machine was sitting by itself and before I left I strolled over to take a look at it. Nobody said a word about it, no one tried to stop me. Had I been a hacker, I could have had free access to the machine. How do they intend to protect against THAT?

1. It's been a couple of years since I've voted in-person
Honestly, I didn't know King Co. was using Diebold machines at all. Why did they buy new machines, when they're talking about going to all-mail voting in a couple of years? Either way, boo to them for getting Diebold!

2. I had no idea they were using Diebold in King County.
Last time I voted in person at my precinct (I've been absentee for about 6 years.) they were using the punch card.

Where are you in Seattle? I'm in Wallingford. PM me if you want.

3. One good thing--
--there is little to no payoff to game machines that few people use. However, there is still the fuckup problem--any complex equipment that is used infrequently is at particular risk. There is NO, absolutely NO, excuse for making our elections beta tests.

4. I'm in Maple Leaf. King County bought a bunch of machines
ostensibly to accommodate disabled voters. There were ads on a lot of buses about Election Freedom Day or some such drivel.

Is the by mail voting (awful idea) a done deal?

5. I think it's a done deal

But I recall hearing that they'd delayed it a year, though I could be wrong.

6. Yes, it's been delayed, because the head of elections
is leaving, if he already hasn't. I think the mess with the 2004 gubernatorial race took it's toll on him. Since they need to find a new head of elections, they are delaying all-mail-in voting for awhile. But you can still do mail-in, just by voting absentee, which I've done since 2002.

7. Yeah, that's why they were delaying it... now I remember
For some reason, when I searched for articles, I couldn't find any more recent ones than the one I just posted. :D

I've been voting absentee for a couple of years now.

How're you doing?

8. Doing well.
Kicking back right now. Gotta tie up the loose ends from work before I turn everything in on Monday (then go to my job interview!)
