Why Did Byrd Vote To Confirm Owen?
I've always like Sen Byrd. And still do... but I'm just wondering why he voted for her.

Was it because of his position (and Landreiu as well) in the compromise?

I guess it doesn't matter, but I was just wondering. Afterall, I have WV Byrd blood in my ancestry... he might be my uncle or something. :D

6. He's always been a man of honor in the past.
Wrong as it would be, he may have felt it was his obligation in the godforsaken compromise.

12. take a look at his voting record
especially on social issues

he's been as conservative as any Republican

he's anti-choice; anti-gay rights; doesn't have the best record on minority rights either

I lived in West Virginia the vast majority of my life and the only good thing I can say about Byrd is that he brought home the bacon

7. If Byrd had voted against Owen...
Owen would still be confirmed.

Good cop, bad cop? His re-election bid?

8. Re-election?
He can barely even walk!

I'm afraid that the GOP will get that seat when he leaves.

9. He Can Walk
Didn't you see or hear about the one-on-one debate he had with Frist? He sent the majority leader running out of the senate chamber with his tail between his legs, during mid-debate! This prompted Byrd to ask, "Where is my adversary?"

Bobby's not out of gas yet, and he's going to be re-elected next year.

11. I think if he campaigns hard for another dem, the seat will be alright
West Virginia has started to go red on the presidential level but not on the state level. What mind boggles me is the fact that they went for Dukakis in 1988 but not for Gore in 2000.
