1. I'll start the conversation!
West Virginia Hills
Words by Mrs. Ellen King,
Music by H. E. Engle

1. Oh, the West Virginia hills! How majestic and how grand,
With their summits bathed in glory, Like our Prince Immanuel's Land!
Is it any wonder then, That my heart with rapture thrills,
As I stand once more with loved ones On those West Virginia hills?

CHORUS:

Oh, the hills, beautiful hills, How I love those West Virginia hills!
If o'er sea o'er land I roam, Still I'll think of happy home,
And my friends among the West Virginia hills.

2. Oh, the West Virginia hills! Where my childhood hours were passed,
Where I often wandered lonely, And the future tried to cast;
Many are our visions bright, Which the future ne'er fulfills;
But how sunny were my daydreams On those West Virginia hills!

CHORUS

3. Oh, the West Virginia hills! How unchang'd they seem to stand,
With their summits pointed skyward To the Great Almighty's Land!
Many changes I can see, Which my heart with sadness fills;
But no changes can be noticed In those West Virginia hills.

CHORUS

4. Oh, the West Virginia hills! I must bid you now adieu.
In my home beyond the mountains I shall ever dream of you;
In the evening time of life, If my Father only wills,
I shall still behold the vision Of those West Virginia hills.

CHORUS

(Almost Level West Virginia!)

2. Paradise by John Prine (Sorry, wrong state, but right sentiment)
Edited on Sat May-01-04 07:38 AM by no_hypocrisy
When I was a child, my family would travel
Down to western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my mem'ries are worn

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry, my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry, my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

And the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry, my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry, my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

3. Not from WV but love the state..... It's a shame that this................
kind of thing continues. I've spent a lot of time rafting the Cheat, Gauley, Tygart and New rivers and I have to say the beauty of WV is one of those best kept secrets.

4. Wouldn't it be nice...
if the senior Senator from WV found something in his pocket Constitution that might slow this sort of thing down.

Maybe a few new highways...

6. I need to say now,
that I agree. He is a hero here for his rhetoric in the senate,but has he ever fought against the tearing down of the mountains? Schooling on the Constitution might be a dodge for real public service.
What do you think?

5. I've signed petitions
about stopping the abuses. No reason for this wanton destruction of mountaintops except for greed.

7. Here is a great web site!
OVEC

http://www.ohvec.org/index.html

My hat is off to the people who are fighting back! This is the saddest thing I've ever seen, this raping of our mountains! Gone forever! How can these people who claim to represent God's will, destroy God's great creations for money? If there really is a God his/her heart must be breaking as mine is, when I look at man's "Progress" here in West Virginia!

8. Oh Hubert, God wants us all to be rich,
didn't ya read the prayer of Jay-bez? Forget all that crap about loving your neighbor and caring for God's property. He gave us those mountains so we could sell them off to out-of-state corporate interests. Besides, surely mountains are renewable resources, right? Its' probably just more junk science telling us that mountaintop removal and land "reclaimation" is bad.

10. Big Pigdig today, the slop will flow freely to the hungry CEOs!
The AT Massey coal company shareholders will meet in Charleston today to discuss CEO benefit packages! The UMWA will have over 200 protesters outside the hotel! I hope it turns out to be 2000 protesters! Should make the news tonight if there is a good crowd! I look for property owners in the path of the land rapers to turn out too, in force!
