Another election concern
In the first week of early voting, voters in three counties have reported that touch-screen voting machines switched their vote from Democrat to Republican.
People must have confidence that their vote will be counted correctly. A record number of new voters have registered this year. What will they think when they read - even before Election Day - that votes are being switched, or that there is a danger of a machine doing such a thing?
In fairness, there have been only nine reports out of 35,000 early votes already cast, according to the office of Secretary of State Betty Ireland. On Wednesday, Ireland said all voters who reported problems said they were able to cast their votes correctly eventually. Her staff says county clerks are under orders to recalibrate machines immediately if any voter reports an irregularity.
"Recalibrate" means an official tinkers with the machine to make sure it registers votes correctly. On Tuesday, Ireland asked county clerks to recalibrate machines every day, but her staff could not say who in each county, would do this task.
