WHEELING, W.Va. -- Last month, Ohio County prosecutors dropped charges against a Northwood Health Systems employee accused of hitting and swearing at an elderly woman with a developmental disability in a Kroger parking lot in May.


Now, the woman's guardian and one witness are questioning why those abuse charges were dismissed.


The alleged victim in the case, 64-year-old Mary Ann Kaib, lived at Northwood's Ritz Avenue Group Home in Wheeling.


She died Sept. 21, one of three Northwood clients to die while under their care in the last two months. There is no indication the incident in May is related to her death. Read More...

Troubled non-profit Northwood sends millions to foundation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Wheeling-based Northwood Health Systems is a non-profit organization that has managed to make millions in "profits" every year -- and has transferred at least $20 million to a foundation that promotes Christianity.


These profits have allowed Northwood CEO Pete Radakovich to receive more than $480,000 in compensation in fiscal year 2008 from Northwood and the Behavioral Health Foundation.


Last month, state regulators chose not to renew Northwood's license to operate, after two clients died and investigators found evidence of abuse and humiliation.


They're allowing Northwood to stay open during negotiations. At stake are the futures of hundreds of employees and about 3,000 people with mental illness, substance abuse problems and developmental disabilities. More...
