The Hardy County Commission, a group of Democrats, issued the following proclamation. When I read it in the local paper I thought it was an April fools joke.
The first paragraphs are as follows:
Whereas, the residents of Hardy County West Virginia have a noble lineage in their Confederate ancestors who honorably and heroically took up arms to secure liberty for their country, the Confederate States of America, and in the defense of and protection for their homes and families against an invading army; and
Whereas, the men of Hardy County, West Virginia served in the armies of the Confederate States of America with valor, many paying the ultimate sacrifice of laying down their lives for their country..... You can read the rest in the Moorefield Examiner.
My great grandfather was an officer in the CSA army. Last year I was invited to a memorial given for him by the Sons of The Confederacy and declined. My great grandfather was not proud that he owned slaves, he bought many more than he needed to keep families from being separated. He had my great grandmother teach the slaves to read and write. Before he left to fight in the war he gave each family their freedom 20 acres and a cabin. He would have been offended that the local KKK in disguise sought to honor him. I told the group I didn't hang around people who wear sheets and that they were dishonoring my ancestor.
The tone of the Proclamation is embarrassing and shows the ignorant commissioners for the bigots they are. I ask myself time and time again, "what the fuck am I doing in this state."
