Traffic in Huntington?
Driving thru WV for a wedding in Cinci

Is there huge bridge work being done in Huntington?

-cross post from the Ohio fourm
so our options are 64W to 35/32

or

64W to 75 N (Lexington KY)

other options are going up towards PA and back down on 70 (I think it is)
OR cutting through Mongahela forest on 50W but the first two options are 1 and 1A

What do you think are the best options.

Leaving Staunton area of Va bright and early (7AM at the latest) putting us in Huntington WV at around 11ish

LEaving Sunday morning at probably 10 in the morning or so.

Any big construction sites on the way?

Contacts in the trucking industry suggested 65/75 just to rule out getting caught behind a "farmer" or "the church crowd"

1. Suggestions....

  • Avoid US 50 at all costs -- at least from Winchester, VA, to Bridgeport, WV. It's an incredibly windy, though very scenic road. Save it for a long, slow trip.
  • Going up into Pennsylvania and then crossing on I-70 is hours out of the way.
  • I-64 to US 35 (between Charleston and Huntington) is not a bad choice, but US 35 in West Virginia is a mostly two-lane road. It's flat and fairly straight (it follows the Kanawha River), but you have the potential to get stuck behind the church crowd.
  • I-64 to I-75 near Lexington, KY, is probably the best choice if you are uncomfortable with getting off the big highways. However...
  • My personal choice would be:

    • Take I-64 to exit 6 in West Virginia. Follow US 52 across the river to Ohio and continue west. Don't go a single mile above the speed limit -- the Ohio state troopers are evil!
    • About 28 miles later, take the bridge at Franklin Furnace, and cross the river to Kentucky. At the light, go straight onto AA -- the double A highway. The AA is mostly four-lane, but not limited access. Watch for idiots at the intersections.
    • The AA highway will take you about 110 miles to the I-275, the beltway around Cincinnati. From that point, you're on your own.

2. Did you get directions on Google Maps?

Its first choice is also mine:

I-64 west to West Virginia exit 40 (Winfield/Point Pleasant)
US-35 north to Point Pleasant/Ohio state line
OH-OH-124 west/OH-32 west takes you into Cincy.
420 miles from Staunton to Cincy, takes 7 hours and 7 minutes.

This bypasses Huntington, BTW.

Have a bunch of quarters ready for tolls on the WV turnpike.

If you take I-64 to through Huntington to Lexington, then I-75 north, it will take 7 hours and 50 minutes.

If you take US-50 through Clarksburg and Parkersburg it will take 8 hours and 2 minutes.

I agree with Staph about the cops in Ohio. And they seem to be particularly fond of cars with out of state license plates.

Too bad you don't have a Tom Tom, she would talk you all the way in.
