CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginians are now required to recycle old computers, monitors, televisions and other aging electronics.
State Sen. Karen Facemeyer, a Republican from Jackson, sponsored a measure that took effect Saturday banning harmful electronic scrap from being thrown directly into landfills. She says the measure will also give local recycling firms a boost in business.
In Charleston, residents won't have to change habits much to recycle scrap electronics. They can call the city refuse department before dropping junk on the curb. But removal might prove more of a headache in other areas.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that the new law bars TVs, computers, monitors, laptops and anything with a screen larger than 4 inches measured diagonally from being discarded in a landfill. Such peripherals as the computer mouse and printer are exempted.
