HUNTINGTON -- An environmental activist described as a "champion of the underdog" died Wednesday at the age of 90 at St. Mary's Medical Center.
Juanita "Winnie" McClure Fox, of Huntington, was known by area environmentalist groups for being an outspoken and inspiring woman who lived for the truth.
"Winnie was just one of the nicest, most compassionate people that one would ever know. She was really just an inspiration to a lot of people, and a lot of younger people," said Denise Poole, program coordinator for the West Virginia Environmental Council.
Fox was directly involved with the WVEC since the organization was founded in 1989-90. Prior to her involvement with the group, Poole recalled Fox telling stories about fighting for worker rights when she and her late husband, Jack Leo Fox, worked at a factory in Huntington, probably when Fox was in her 20s, Poole estimated.
