Passion, not money, will help Byrd in re-election bid
http://www.wvgazette.com/section/Editorials/Viewpoint/200503179

IF I were advising Sen. Robert Byrd on the 2006 election, I would suggest he hold spending down to the exact amount he and the late Sen. Jennings Randolph spent the year they ran in tandem: 1958.

That was, if memory serves, $50,000.

This has nothing to do with the quality of possible competition, including Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, who is a proven vote-getter. It also has little to do with the fact that Byrd has regularly dispatched opponents, winning 70 percent or more each election.

2. i disagree-he'll have to respond to 527 ads
that will take money. they're going to try the mcgraw attack on him. no matter how much passion he has, if it doen't get heard, it won't matter

most of the media here (daily mail, sinclair, wowk) is intensely rightwing and won't do him any favors.

he's going tohave to go around them to be heard through ads.

i'm in favor of campaign finance as much as the next guy, but if the situation exists in which the GOP will do an ad blitz through phony outside groups, it's shooting yourself in the foot not to respond.

captio is already raising money. byrd needs to start amassing a war chest to fight back.
