Plant recalls beef, but consumers can't be told from what stores.
WASHINGTON - Beef banned under mad cow disease rules was shipped to wholesalers in six states and is being recalled by a Wisconsin plant.

The 1,856 pounds of beef included meat from a Canadian cow that inspectors in Canada determined was eligible for shipment to the United States. A Canadian audit two weeks later found, however, that the cow was a month too old to be allowed inside the U.S.

Green Bay Dressed Beef processed the cow on Aug. 4 and distributed the meat to wholesalers in Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The USDA is trying to find out how much beef wound up in retail stores.

Cohen said USDA officials are prohibited from saying which retail outlets may have received the recalled beef.

I feel great knowing that the beef is recalled from the stores, but not from people's refrigerators.

2. You know a large (currently unknown) outbreak of CJD
might be responsible for a lot of bush votes in 2004. It certainly appears a large portion of our nation is currently suffering from diminished mental capacities.

"diminished mental capacities" because of tainted beef consumption. Hmmmmm, I live in Wisconsin, I say "hold the beef"!

5. I know. I know. I wrote to DATCP to complain. Consumers should
be informed about food recalls PERIOD.

It isn't a retailer's fault that they purchased suspect food, and everyone can be educated to appreciate that. The RESPONSIBLE thing to do is to do EVERYTHING to minimize exposure to food that is suspected of being tainted.

I used to think that Wisconsin's State Health and Food Programs were excellent. This was extremely disappointing.

7. Wisconsin regs tend to be much stronger than the Fed's
This may be one of those places where the Fed regs trump the state regs.

8. I know, I worked for a time as a foodborne disease specialist for WI
I was impressed not only by the policies and quality of Wisconsin public health workers but also by their level of commitment to public interest.

Of course that was 10 years ago. Things can change, but I'd really like to have my faith in them restored.

6. Glad I haven't bought hamburger at the store lately
Not that locally grown and butchered is any better, but I sure feel better eating it.

I'm tired of proping up corporate meat processing plants who always seem to be more protected from bad meat than the consumers. I'm beginning to think we need to start local meat processing coops who operate for the benefit of the consumer rather than corporate stockholders.
