To our Wisconsinite friends:
So.
It looks like whoisalhedges (Vince) and I (Stacie) are taking the last train to splitsville. I know many of you don't venture into the Lounge very often, so here's the (quite enormous, be warned) thread on the topic...

So...if anyone has any connections in the "overpriced Milwaukee East Side ego apartment" community, please let me know.

Thanks muchly.

1. I usually lived in dumps during my time in Milwaukee

But I don't think you would be interested in the Wisconsin Hotel (if it's still there) or Sidney Hi (if that's still there).

However, there was a VERY affordable building of efficiency apartments just south of Brady on Prospect. I think it was the first or second building off the corner. It's a lower, 2-3 story building on the West side of Prospect.

Efficiencies back in the late 80's were only $400/incl. util, so I'd imagine they would run just short of double that nowdays. If you stood on a chair and leaned south in the window, you could just about see a little sliver of lake between the towers across the street.

There were a couple of other fairly inexpensive apartment buildings mixed in with the condos on the same block (farther south). Most of them were fairly nice (10+ years ago).

2. I'm looking for something a little more long-term
Maybe a duplex (I've seen 2b/1ba in decent locations in the $800 range or so). I have a good job, so I won't have to go super-cheap or anything.

Thanks!

5. Well, I always thought everything between North and Sheboygan Ave...
...and East of the river was way overpriced due to it's proximity to the UW.

I was always more of a fan of the Brady St. neighborhood. Polaski and Kane is a fun place, and is a lot cheaper than further north (so you can get a bigger apartment). Plus, it's close enough to crawl home from Romano's or Wolski's, and you can start every day with a big greasy plate of eggs from the Island (is that still there? I hope so...). One of the Balestrieri boys used to have a girlfriend in that neighborhood, so it was safe and all (or used to be).

Humboldt didn't used to be too bad, either (just north of Locust Ave, for example). Lots of duplexes (upper/lower flats) along Humboldt, but a little farther to walk to the East Side.

Looked down in the Third Ward? If you want to blow some cash, there's your ticket!

Good luck.

6. As much as I love the Third Ward...
Yeah. It's out of my range.

I do like the Brady area.

Riverwest is also enjoying a bit of a comeback, but that's kind of case-by-case.

Thanks!

4. Kudos on the amicable split
And best wishes to both of you. Sounds like you're starting down your separate paths on the right foot.

And, yes, the other thread is just too long to post too, but definitely a good read!

7. Thanks, ewagner and sybylla.
Yep, we're hanging in there.

I, at least, should be attending the 2005 state Dem convention, schedule permitting. (I'll be a Milwaukee County resident by then, so I might actually have to try to become a delegate.)

8. well,
I have a nice little house for rent in Madison, but I guess the commute might be a little long.

I'm sorry about your divorce. That can't be easy, regardless of how right it might be. :pals: But hey, look at the bright side - now you two can get along as well as Randi Rhodes and her ex do! They seem to be the best of friends, as long as they aren't married to each other. :hi:
