What is a steering committee? A steering committee is a group of local, committed activists who work with campaign staff on the best methods for campaigning in their area. The committees were originally organized to help with Senator Feingold’s 2004 reelection campaign. Local activists continue to serve on Russ’ committees to keep current on Senator Feingold’s activities and to support other campaigns.
Senator Feingold’s organization has 27 committees across the state, organized by county. The committees are: Dane/Green, Brown/Shawano, Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Douglas, Manitowoc/Sheboygan/Ozaukee, Marathon/Lincoln, Portage/Adams/Waupaca, Outagamie/Winnebago/Waushara/Calumet, Waukesha, Eau Claire/Dunn/Chippewa, St. Croix/Pierce/Pepin, La Crosse/Vernon/Monroe, Walworth/Rock, Wood/Clark, Fond du Lac/Green Lake, Dodge/Jefferson/Washington, Ashland/Bayfield/Iron, Door/Kewaunee, Polk/Burnett/Barron/Washburn, Trempealeau/Jackson/Buffalo, Taylor/Rusk/Price/Sawyer, Richland/Crawford/Grant/Lafayette/Iowa, Columbia/Marquette/Juneau/Sauk, Oneida/Langlade/Vilas/Forest, and Marinette/Oconto/Menominee/Florence.
Who can serve on a steering committee? Everyone. You do not need to be a member of your local Party or have previous experience volunteering for campaigns. What we need from you is the desire to work in your local community to help elect Senator Feingold. We encourage local activists to invite their friends and family to join our committees.
When and where do the committees meet? In 2004, all regional committees met every month in preparation for Senator Feingold’s election. Since that time committees have met a few times each year.
All committees will meet 2-3 times in 2009. The first round of meetings will take place between January and April. Moving into Senator Feingold’s 2010 reelection campaign, all 27 committees will again meet each month.
Meetings usually start between 6 – 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and run for approximately 1 ½ hours. Meetings may also be held on Saturdays.
Committee meetings are held at a variety of sites: public libraries, union halls, technical colleges, education association buildings, county courthouses, etc. Meetings are often held at the same location each month. While some committees cover a large geographic region, meetings are typically held in a city centrally located for all members.
What happens if I cannot attend a meeting? Committee members are encouraged to attend all meetings however, conflicts will arise. Whether in attendance at a meeting or not, all will receive handouts and a written overview of what was discussed at the meeting. If members have email, the materials will be sent electronically. If members do not have email, materials will be mailed within two days.
