To say that Jefferson County Judge Randy Koschnick is heading into the state Supreme Court race as an underdog would be an understatement.
His opponent, Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson, is arguably the court's most popular and visible member. She is also a prolific fundraiser, raking in more than $1 million since the beginning of last year. Koshnick's total for 2008: a mere $14,715.
Having already successfully gained a conservative majority on the court, three groups that have bankrolled previous conservative candidates to the tune of millions of dollars -- Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, Coalition for America's Families and Club for Growth Wisconsin -- are all reportedly sitting out this race.
But in an off-year race in which turnout is expected to be low, Koschnick -- an elder at an evangelical church that espouses an anti-gay, anti-abortion agenda -- may be able to find some key votes among religious conservatives as he battles a justice long considered one of the court's most liberal members.
