A UW student (Brittany Zimmerman) was murdered in her campus apartment in the middle of the day. Apparently she called 911 on a cell phone but was unable to speak... no effort was made by the 911 center to call her back, trace the call, or dispatch police. Somebody working at the call center made a big mistake.

The murder is still unsolved. There was a later incident where someone called the police to report a fight on the east side of Madison, and no police were dispatched until a second call was made... and a person involved in the fight had been beaten to death.

Since Kathleen Falk is the Dane County Executive, the 911 center is her responsibility. She has made efforts to upgrade the call center since the first murder. The incidents are worrisome but blaming Falk for them doesn't seem fair.

Edit: Falk is up for re-election in the April election and Nancy Mistele is her Republican opponent.
