I was working the Dem booth at the fair and I was by myself. This young man about 28 years old with a "Reagan/Bush '84" tee shirt stops and starts to challenge me. He makes more money than me, pays more taxes than me and is a patriot. He complained he called Obey's office and didn't get a reply and he should have gotten a reply as he "pays so much in taxes." He tried to engage those passing by and they just ignored him. When his voice got louder and louder I told him his objective was to gather a crowd to support him. He said (very loudly), "I hope this health care bill passes and kills Medicare so you won't get a hip replacement, get a stint you needed or get any heart surgery. When I said, "Oh, you're one of those compassionate conservatives" he started to say very loudly, "I'm and independent". A big, muscular guy in his 40's stopped, looked at his Reagan/Bush tee shirt and said very loudly so the crowd could hear, "Reagan/Bush, what a dumb ass." The "independent" went chest to chest with Mr. Muscles and kept saying, "Hit me. I know you want to hit me." Mr. Muscles said, "I'm 250 pounds of muscle and I don't hit things like you." The crowd laughed as Mr. Independent slunk away. Needless to say the people that wouldn't join him and Mr. Muscles were my heroes.
