Union rejects pact; Mercury Marine to move jobs
By Rick Barrett and Erin Richards of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: Aug. 23, 2009 12:22 p.m.

Fond du Lac — In a move that could cost them their jobs, Mercury Marine Inc. employees Sunday by a large margin rejected contract concessions that would have included lower wages for new hires and employees called back from layoff.

The final vote was not immediately available.

After the vote, officials at Mercury Marine announced Sunday that the company will consolidate much of its Fond du Lac manufacturing operations with its existing operations in Stillwater, Okla.

The full consolidation is expected to take between 24 and 36 months, the company said. After the consolidation, the company said, there will be "from zero to 200" manufacturing jobs left at the Fond du Lac plant.

The consolidation is expected to begin later this year.

2. They may discover that you get what you pay for
Or they may discover that they can move their manufacturing operations across the Rio Grande and pay even less than they do in Oklahoma.

Either way I don't believe this is a wise move.

3. A legislation that abolishes companies that picks up the ball and moves elsewhere
if they don't like the union, can go bankrupt and taken over by the said union, and made into a unionized shop!

9. i wonder what the reduced wages after coming back from layoff meant.
understand it was like a 30 percent reduction in wages????
who the hell can afford that.

If they shut down the plant for 1 day could they reduce the wages of the whole buch by 30 percent???

It sounded like a straight take it or leave it contract.

Hard to vote down your job, but i understand why it would happen.

has been trying to bust the union for years. They lost, so now they're taking their marbles and moving to some slack jaw yokel state.
