Sensenbrenner Challenger Enters 2010 RaceA small business owner is now up against a big name to represent Wisconsin's 5th congressional district, which includes parts of Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, Ozaukee, and Jefferson counties.
Outside his small business in Menomonee Falls, a local real estate investor entered the ring against a congressional heavyweight. "I recognize that it's an uphill climb, but I think there's a real niche for moderate views both on the Democratic and Republican side," said Todd Kolosso, a Democrat new to politics.
By announcing his candidacy for the 5th congressional district, he will be pitted against 16-term incumbent Jim Sensenbrenner. He will run as a Democrat, but said he lives in both political worlds as a small business owner who wants health care reform.
"I have (health care), at great cost, my employees have it at great cost, and I'd like the millions of people in this country who don't have health insurance have access to it. I think it's simple fairness," Kolosso said, explaining one reason why he is running.
"There's got to be more talking, there's got to be more civility and more doing -- there has to be more doing," Kolosso said.
Kolosso emphasized more action on tax incentives that help small businesses grow and federal programs to save the family farm.
"I've come to the realization that partisan politics has really stymied development for us. We're hearing a lot of shouting, a lot of yelling, and we're not hearing a lot of working together," Kolosso said.
Kolosso is looking to next fall when the next act of his career could occur. Kolosso said he voted for Sensenbrenner in the past, but has grown weary of the tone in Washington. Congressman Sensenbrenner's campaign did not return any phone calls.
The congressional election is the fall of 2010.
