Gov. Jim Doyle found little to praise about his party's only declared candidate for governor Wednesday. Since the Democratic governor announced in August he wasn't running for a third term, Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton - who has never been seen as close to Doyle - has been the only major candidate to declare she was running in their party's primary.
Asked about Lawton's accomplishments in her nearly seven years in office, Doyle said she had been "quite visible." "The lieutenant governor has worked hard on the arts and a number of other projects and she'll put those credentials against whoever's in the race," said Doyle, who added he expected other Democrats to run.
Lawton has gained a number of endorsements from Democrats in recent days including lawmakers such as Sen. Jim Sullivan, D-Wauwatosa, and former state Democratic Party chairman Matt Flynn, along with a coalition of 250 Democratic women. Those supporters credit Lawton with working to create jobs and support the state's veterans.
Lawton spokesman Will Hackman said Lawton had worked effectively on issues ranging from providing equal pay for women to creating green jobs.
"There is not a realm the lieutenant governor hasn't explored in terms of job creation - from small businesses to clean energy entrepreneurship to high-tech and creative industries as well. Wisconsin families and businesses count on her advocacy, and she has delivered," Hackman said.
