Woman Bitten By Bear At Wisconsin Zoo. (she ignored barriers)
Edited on Sat Mar-06-10 06:45 AM by Stuart G
MANITOWOC, Wis. - Police say a bear bit off a woman's fingers at a Wisconsin zoo after she ignored barriers and warning signs to try to feed the animal.

The Lincoln Park Zoo in Manitowoc closed after the incident Friday morning. Police say the 47-year-old woman lost a thumb and a forefinger, and two other fingers were partially severed.

The woman's boyfriend was bitten as he tried to pry the bear's mouth off her hand, but he didn't lose any fingers. Her 3-year-old granddaughter wasn't injured

A mayor's office statement says alcohol played a factor.

1. My thought is, they likely put a sign up thereabouts to the effect that
one should not try to feed the animals.

Which sounds like pretty good advice.

5. There were signs saying
"Stay away from fence” and “Do not feed animals.”

But Rule #1 of Warning Signs is that no matter how large and obvious you make them, there will always be some people who: A. Don't see them; B. Dismiss them; C. Think they don't apply to them.

Such a shame too...she was so close to getting a Darwin Award...but I suppose since she already had grandchildren, it's too late to keep her genes from spreading.

6. Yep. There is that pretty large group of folks who
know the signs are up there but figure they are special and don't have to read 'em or heed 'em.

Big win for the bear in this case.

18. how awful anyway. we had a woman up here who tried to get
close to our polar bear, Binky. He kicked her ass and got her red shoe. Carried it around until it wore out, his trophy. Bears are scary. they wander around up here and I don't go hiking because of it.

Every year I say we are going to go and we never do. I think it will be a good time.

9. You know, this is not the first time someone tries to feed bears,
and they turn of the feeder. I suspect there will be a few more of these till people get the idea..don't feed the bears.

12. Here in La Crosse, WI a bear got into the zoo park last summer.
The zoo is right on a large marsh with lots of wildlife and the bluffs are also nearby. On a Saturday a black bear wandered into the park and then panicked when people started to come into the park and then the people panicked. The bear was really more scared than the people and it climbed up into a tree. The police were there then and they claimed they did not have a tranquilizer gun and the nearest one was an hour away so they simply shot and killed the bear.

As it turned out there was a tranquilizer gun just a few miles away at the local Humane Society. Where had they gotten the gun from a few years earlier? The police department. The ignorance is astounding.

11. STOOPID should be painful.
The fences aren't there to keep the dangerous animals from getting out. They are there to keep the stupid humans from getting in.
