JANESVILLE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Former state Commerce Secretary Dick Leinenkugel announces he's running for U.S. Senate.
Leinenkugel, a former U.S. Marine, he ended several weeks of speculation Monday by saying he will challenge the incumbent senator, the Democratic Russ Feingold.
Leinenkugel becomes the third Republican challenger in the race. The other candidates are Madison real estate developer Terrence Wall and Watertown small-businessman Dave Westlake.
Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson is also considering a run.
Former Governor Tommy Thompson, also mulled entering the race before announcing earlier this month he won't be a candidate.
Political experts say Leinenkugel is the only candidate who starts off with name recognition, because of his family's beer business of the same name. But critics have already attacked him for serving 18 months in the administration of Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat.
