Herricks had served for two years with Johnson on the Oshkosh Chamber Partners in Education Council, and felt Johnson was a divisive figure on the council.

Early in the campagn, Johnson mentioned Herricks often, saying it was a good example of his ability to work with people of different political persuasions.

But the Johnson campaign did something else. Julie Leschke, a former Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce employee who left the Chamber to work for the Johnson campaign, contacted at least two people in the Oshkosh Area School District to ask them to write a rebuttal letter to Herricks' letter endorsing Feingold.

Viegut, who became superintendent last July, said he told Leschke that "I did not think it was in their best interests to make any more of this issue than they have."
