MILWAUKEE — Poverty rates in the majority of Wisconsin counties have risen by more than 10 percent in the last decade.
That's according to a new report from the University of Wisconsin Extension based on census data. In Northeastern Wisconsin, the report found that poverty has worsened in most counties, with Door County being the exception.
The percentage of residents living in poverty increased in Brown County from 6.9 percent to 10.3 percent; in Kewaunee County from 5.8 percent to 6.7 percent; and in Oconto County from 7.1 percent to 10.5 percent.
Northeastern Wisconsin's highest rates of poverty were recorded in Shawano County, which jumped from 7.9 percent to 11.5 percent, and in Marinette County, which jumped from 8.3 percent to 12.9 percent.
Door County saw its poverty rate dip to 6.2 percent from a previous level of 6.4 percent. The report compared data from the 2000 census with new poverty figures from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey's five-year estimates from 2005 through 2009.
