Russ Feingold to teach at Marquette Law School
Russ Feingold will become the latest ex-senator to go on to teach law, after Marquette University announced Wednesday the Wisconsin Democrat would join its faculty in the spring.

Feingold, who lost his bid for a fourth term to Republican Ron Johnson, will teach an elective course called "Current Legal Issues: The U.S. Senate" to upper-level law students, the Wisconsin school said in a statement on its website.

"Senator Feingold joins Marquette Law School with a substantial academic, legal and legislative background," said Joseph D. Kearney, dean of Marquette University Law School. "He will draw on all of this in working with students in their analysis of some of the most complex legal issues facing our nation and world today."

A native of the Dairy State, Feingold earned his undergraduate degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. After being selected as a Rhodes scholar, he went on to become an honors law graduate of both Oxford University and Harvard University. He practiced law at two Wisconsin firms before turning to politics.

Feingold said while considering his next career move, "the opportunity to be in a Wisconsin classroom with engaged law students is one I found very appealing."

The former senator also plans on writing a book.

This sounds like something that he would actually consider fun. Those are some very lucky law students.

2. Feingold says he has no plans now to run
Interview with Associated Press Saturday, January 8, 2011

MILWAUKEE - When U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold lost his re-election bid in November, he created a buzz with a cryptic reference to the next election year. "It's on to the next battle," he told supporters in a brief concession speech. "It's on to 2012, and it is on to our next adventure."

That reference launched plenty of speculation. Political observers noted that his Democratic colleague, Sen. Herb Kohl, will be up for re-election that year but may decide against seeking a fifth term at age 77. That could open the door for another Feingold run. Or maybe he was aiming higher - perhaps a challenge to President Barack Obama in a bid to win the White House or at least push his fellow Democrat further to the left.

Feingold dispelled both rumors this week. He said he simply mentioned 2012 to remind Democrats that their chance to turn things around is only two years away. "What I was saying was, people who care about our country should be concerned about re-electing Obama," he told The Associated Press. "I was trying to urge all of my supporters to understand that even though we had a bad night, we will have good night in 2012. There was no agenda regarding myself."

Feingold lost to Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson by 5 percentage points in November, marking his first loss in four Senate elections. Now, after spending half his life in state or national office, the 57-year-old liberal finds himself back in the private sector.
