Joe Parisi entered the Dane County executive race with sterling liberal credentials, and bragging rights as the only one of the six candidates who has won election to countywide office.
He also has his own rock band. Well, actually the band retired in the 1990s, but he dusted off his drumsticks and pulled the members of Honor Among Thieves together again last month to perform at a fund-raiser for his campaign.
Parisi doesn't come across like a brash rocker. He often is the most soft-spoken, cautious and measured of the candidates when addressing issues in public forums. But he points to his record as a state legislator and his endorsements from advocacy groups as evidence of his passion.
"I'm not afraid to take a position," Parisi said. "People support and endorse me because I do take a stand. You can still do that while being respectful of other people's positions."
Parisi was elected to the Dane County clerk post four times, from 1996 to 2004. He supervised a staff of four, coordinated elections with clerks from about 60 towns, cities and villages, and made the county one of the first in Wisconsin to post election results online.
