So it looks like the system schools will have to give up the "University of Wisconsin" part of their names. Ouch! Things are moving along quickly in Wisconsin.
I suggest the system schools start thinking up some good names, fast. I don't think "University of Whitewater" or "Superior University" is going to cut it. Those names sound too much like online diploma mills. What are they going to call themselves? "Harvad"... Stanfurd"... any ideas?
"The chancellor at UW-Stevens Point sent a memo to Scott Walker stating the governor's apparent plans to spin UW-Madison away from the rest of the University of Wisconsin System would "cause irreparable harm" and send his institution "back to the 19th century."
...
His memo adds that "we believe that a key to our success over the past generation has come with our university's first name. We also understand that your plan to spin-off UW-Madison will include allowing that university to take the UW identity with it. Although our proud history here at Stevens Point goes back to 1894, and has included various institutional identities, our best years, thus far, have been as UW-Stevens Point. We believe that even better years lie ahead.
"To lose the UW brand and prestige -- that we helped establish and build -- in today's highly competitive climate will cause irreparable harm. You are looking for ways to better administer UW-Madison in the 21st century, but you'll be sending UW-Stevens Point back to the 19th century with the plan you have chosen."
