Duffy Abruptly Changes Answer On Gerrymandering Scheme
July 1, 2011 (Wausau, WI) -- Congressman Sean Duffy abruptly changed his answer on charges that he has worked with Congressman Paul Ryan to cut Democratic-leaning areas out of the 7th District.
In an article published online by the Superior Telegram but written by Wisconsin Public Radio reporter Glen Moberg, Duffy claims, "...I can't say I drew the map because I didn't." Yet over the past two weeks in report after report (below), Duffy has responded with "no comment" to reporter inquiries on the matter.
Further, he has failed to account for his participation in a "closed door" meeting about redistricting that took place on Monday, June 13th in Washington. That meeting was described in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's original story on the matter (link below).
"If Duffy didn't have anything to do with the gerrymandered map, why did he keep telling the press that he had no comment the past several weeks?" asked Jeff Johnson, Marathon County Democratic Chair. "Duffy needs to explain his participation in the closed door meeting on June 13th and he needs to come clean on what his conversations about redistricting were prior to that, whether with Congressman Ryan or anyone else. Otherwise, given the report on that closed door meeting and his most recent quote, Duffy looks disingenuous at best and like he's flat-out lying at worst. He needs to clear this up."
The draft map would divide counties in central Wisconsin which have close historic, economic, and cultural ties as well as cut out the city of Chippewa Falls, located in Democratic congressional candidate Pat Kreitlow's backyard.
