Wisconsin Democrat Dave Hansen defeats David VanderLeest in Senate recall election
With 47 of 72 precincts reporting, Hanson has 69 percent of the vote with 13,675 to VanderLeest's 6,191.
"I think we started something here in northeast Wisconsin," Hansen told supporters at the Riverside Ballroom tonight.
"The rest and the best is yet to come," he told the crowd before introducing fellow Democrat Nancy Nusbaum, Sen. Rob Cowles' challenger in the Aug 9 recall election for the District 2 seat.
Hansen, the assistant minority leader in the Senate, was one of 14 Democrats to leave the state in February to block passage of Walker's bill to end collective bargaining powers for most public employees. That prompted VanderLeest to collect 15,540 valid signatures from voters unhappy with Hansen's actions, launching the recall race.
VanderLeest won the Republican Party's nomination after Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, failed to collect enough valid signatures to get his name on the ballot. But VanderLeest's campaign has been bogged down with controversy stemming from allegations of domestic abuse from an ex-wife. VanderLeest also did not pay property taxes in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and has an unpaid settlement of almost $30,000 from 2006.
