Gov. Scott Walker will face a recall election next spring, and so will his lieutenant governor, Rebecca Kleefisch.
There has been some speculation that it might be possible to recall Walker while leaving his ticket-mate in place.
But that is absurd, from a political standpoint and a structural standpoint.
Let’s begin with the politics. Walker is in trouble for a lot of reasons.
The home of one of his chief political appointees was raided by the FBI in September, his press secretary sought immunity in a John Doe investigation of political corruption, and his chief of staff stepped down two days after it was revealed that he had maneuvered the woman whose home was raided into an ill-defined $100,000-a-year state position.
Since Walker’s policies began to take hold in April of this year, Wisconsin’s unemployment rate has risen six-tenths of a percentage point, even as the national jobless rate has remained steady and neighboring states have recorded significant job growth.
But what did the most political harm to the governor was his attack on labor rights, his politicization of the civil service, and his undermining of local democracy in Wisconsin’s towns, villages, cities and school districts.
