Saturday morning's recall rally, with its balmy sunshine and clear skies, was in stark contrast to the frigid protests February outside the Capitol in Madison, but the goal remains the same.
"I'm hoping we can recall (Gov. Scott Walker). I'm hoping we can change the balance in the Legislature also, so that we can get our progressive state back," said Pat Melby, an Eau Claire Democrat, as she affixed a "Recall Walker" bumper sticker to her car after signing up to volunteer to collect signatures for recall petitions.
People can begin collecting signatures on Tuesday, after which there are 60 days to collect the 540,000 signatures needed to hold a recall election.
"I think they're hoping to get most of the signatures up front because of the holidays, the weather, all that kind of stuff," said Ken Sullivan, a volunteer and member of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin and former teacher at DeLong Middle School.
"I'm a retired educator, so I didn't get messed up in all these things, but I'm very concerned about what's going to happen to the schools, what's going to happen to the people I worked with," Sullivan said. "My feelings about the recall is that Walker overreached, and it's not so much the cost-saving he was interested in as crippling the opposition."
Across the state, residents who feel the same are holding recall rallies of their own. More than 400 people showed up in support of the recall in Eau Claire, estimated Jeff Smith, a former Democratic state Assemblyman. Smith conducted the rally, put on by the Democratic Party of Wisconsin organization, which also featured speakers state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout, D.-Alma, and former state Rep.
