The MLR rule says that no more than 20 percent of my insurance premium can go to a company's administrative costs and profits. If a company doesn't meet that goal, they must rebate me the difference. It's a fair way to encourage insurers to rein in their costs and make coverage more affordable.
The recently submitted application to adjust this new rule means insurance companies in our state won't have to meet the law until 2014. That eliminates a critical consumer protection from companies that overcharge us for health coverage.
And it means we could lose out on rebates insurance companies may owe us!
With numerous insurers providing individual coverage in the state, and several companies already meeting the new requirement, it's clear that our state does not need an adjustment to the new rule.
