Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager came to Algoma on Thursday to talk about her drunken-driving conviction with other convicted drunken drivers.
Lautenschlager accepted an invitation from Door County Judge D. Todd Ehlers to speak about her experience during a victim-impact panel session for convicted drunken drivers in Door and Kewaunee counties as part of their sentences. During the session lasting about an hour in the Algoma High School little theater, she was the last of three featured speakers who talked about being in a drunken-driving accident.
The other speakers included a man paralyzed from the chest down in a rollover accident, which led to his third operating-while-intoxicated conviction, and a woman who described sustaining serious injuries in a head-on collision with a drunken driver.
Lautenschlager, who gained notoriety last year for driving off a road in a state-owned vehicle under the influence of alcohol, said it was an "honor" to appear at the victim-impact panel session and raise awareness about drunken driving in order for people to understand the consequences of the problem. She touted the sessions as a means of achieving a lower rate of repeat drunken drivers.
