Metro talker: No Reagan Highway here

June 2, 2005
Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle vetoed a Republican bill Wednesday that would have dedicated part of U.S. 14, starting in Madison, to President Reagan.

The measure would have designated the portion of the highway from Madison to the Wisconsin-Illinois border as the Ronald Reagan Highway.

Doyle said in a statement that tradition demands highways and bridges in Wisconsin be named only for Wisconsin-born citizens or state residents. Lawmakers in the past have followed that precedent to avoid politicizing highway names, the governor said.

Nicely done! I knew Doyle wouldn't let that one slip past very easily. But I especially like his tradition of non-partisanship statement that followed his veto. Way to go, Doyle!

5. Yowsa, they sure can talk some shit
from Broca's link:

“Governor Doyle claimed his reason for vetoing this bill was that memorials have always had a direct connection to the state. That’s funny considering he issued his veto while standing in the city of Madison, Wisconsin- named for a Virginian,” said Grover Norquist, chairman of the RRLP. “Reagan led our nation and the world through some of the most dangerous times in history, that’s more than I can say for Governor Doyle.”

Sounds to me like the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project is run by a bunch of professional whiners. I hope they take their ball and go home.

8. Norquist is a dingleberry.
Is he proposing that Wisconsin re-name Madison?

Actually, Doyle could put forth a counter-proposal naming that stretch of highway "LaFollette Highway" and the Republicans would be at a loss to explain why offering the name of a late prominent Wisconsin Republican would constitute partisanship on the part of the Democratic governor.
